Huawei puts HTC, Samsung to shame with an Ice Cream Sandwich phone first
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungHTCHuaweiGoogleAndroid 4.0
Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” is now available on the first non-Nexus phone in the world, but it’s not from Samsung or HTC, as you might expect. Instead, Huawei can lay claim to the honour of being first out of the gate, while almost everyone else was stuck showing off new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” phones at CES two weeks ago.
The rather charming Huawei Honor, with a 4-inch display, 1.4GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera is the first phone to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, apart from the Google-backed Samsung Galaxy Nexus (The older Nexus S has also already received the update).

Nokia announces 1.5 billion S40 handset sales on eve of earnings call
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia chose today to announce the 1.5 billionth sale of a handset running the company's Series 40 operating system — the day after Apple announced its own staggering numbers and a day before Nokia's full-year earnings are due. That compares to about 183 million iPhones sold since its launch in 2007. First introduced on the Nokia 7110 in 1999, S40 is the less famous but ubiquitous sidekick to the Windows Phone OS Nokia adopted for its smartphone platform earlier this year. The 1.5 billion number is a good measure of Nokia's reach given that there are only about seven billion people on the planet, three billion of whom still don't have mobiles phones according to Nokia's estimates (and hopes).

iPhone 4S survey shows many choose 64GB version
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
I always think I download a lot of apps and other material for my smartphone and when I used an iPhone, I thought it was packed with apps. I had the smallest storage version of the smartphone though and was never in danger of running out of space. Many people are now opting for the big storage version of the 4S according to the latest numbers from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

Virgin Media may bid on 4G spectrum
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Virgin Media is mulling over a possible bid in the UK 4G spectrum auction scheduled for later this year after testing 4G coverage at its Oxford Street store.
The news may come as a surprise to anyone who thought that Ofcom's upcoming auction was a four-horse race, with Branson's phone arm considering joining O2, Everything Everywhere, Vodafone and Three in the fray.
It's not a definite though, with a spokesperson for the network saying, ""Ofcom were quite explicit about encouraging new entrants into the market, which is an encouraging sign.
"They are looking at making the sort of spectrum that we would look to use available, not just for the big mobile operators. So there is potential here f...

Sony redesigns back-lit CMOS for improved smartphone cameras
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasCell PhonesSony
Sony has developed CMOS designs to offer improved performance on small sensors and is planning three such sensors for smartphones and similar devices. The 'Stacked CMOS' design builds on the backlit CMOS idea by building the light-sensitive photo element on top of the processing circuitry, rather than combining them in a single layer. This creates a greater light-sensitive area while also making more space for processing circuitry. The company has also demonstrated two feaures that use the extra circuitry space of the design.
The first of these features is what Sony is calling RGBW Coding, which appears to be another attempt at including clear (white) pixels in the sensor's color filter arra...

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak installed almost a million in three days

On Friday, the Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team joined forces and released “Absinthe A5,” an untethered jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The two groups released the download figures on Monday and revealed that almost 1 million people jailbroke their devices during Absinthe’s first three days of availability. Using Cydia, the alternative App Store that comes with the exploit, the team was able to track the exact number of downloads. Specifically, the jailbreak was performed on 491,325 iPhone 4S handsets, 308,967 iPad 2 tablets and 152,940 iPad 2s that had been previously jailbroken on iOS 4.

T-Mobile says iPhone offers 'poor' experience, points customers to 4G Android phones instead
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-Mobile
An internal document allegedly obtained from T-Mobile says the iPhone offers a “poor” customer experience on T-Mobile’s network. While it’s arguable that is a true statement since current iPhone models don’t support T-Mobile’s 1700MHz and 2100MHz 3G/4G bands and can only run on a second-generation EDGE network, there are now well over a million T-Mobile customers currently using unlocked iPhones on its network. The internal document instead asks customer service representatives to suggest customers buy T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ Android devices instead. We certainly understand where T-Mobile is coming from; obviously it wants to be able to control its customers’ experiences on its network. Plus, ED...

LG’s Quad-Core 2012 Flagship Leaks: The Poorly Code-Named X3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLG
Other than the LG Spectrum, LG didn’t have much to show off by way of phones at this year’s CES show. But that doesn’t mean that something special isn’t in the works.
In fact, Pocketnow reports that LG’s 2012 flagship will run a Tegra 3 quad-core chipset and go by the name X3, at least for now. The phone likely won’t show up on store shelves until spring or summer, but we should hear an announcement (including a retail name) come Mobile World Congress in February.
Other specs include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which will be a must with most phones released this spring, 16GB of memory (with an SD card slot), and camera fun for everyone. By that I mean an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera an...

LG Optimus Black Gingerbread update rolling out in Europe and India
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGGoogleAndroid 2.3Optimus Black
You know how they say – better late than never. That seems to be exactly what LG is thinking when it finally decided to release a Gingerbread update for its Optimus Black smartphone. Not sure why it took them so long, but the good thing is that the new Android version is now available to download. Actually, we’re hearing only users in Europe and India can grab Android 2.3.4, while the rest of the world will have to wait for few more days/weeks (we’re not sure).

New iOS Hack Lets You Natively Tweet By Talking To Siri

There’s no shortage of novel things you can strongarm Siri into doing for you these days, but sometimes it’s the little things that get me excited.
While not as innately flashy as being able to start a car, a new (and currently nameless) tweak from developer InfectionFX does something that Siri should have been able to do from the beginning: tweet for you.

Verizon sold 15M Android phones, nearly 11M iPhones in 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesVerizon Wireless
Verizon announced during its earnings call today that 15 million Android phones were activated and nearly 11 million iPhones were sold. This news comes after the largest wireless carrier in the United States activated a record of over 4 million iPhones in the fourth quarter.
Apparently these numbers weren’t too impressive as investors punished the company’s stock because costs associated with offering the iOS handset weighed heavily on Big Red’s earnings. Verizon pays a subsidy for iPhone ending up around $400, but the company makes that money back from consumers signing into a two-year contract. This is standard practice for all cell phone providers, as they give customers a “discounted” pr...

Nokia Lumia 910 may arrive in May with 12-megapixel camera
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia may be preparing to launch a new Lumia flagship Windows Phone this spring. Industry insider Eldar Murtazin said the Lumia 910 could launch in Europe as soon as this May. The Lumia 900, Nokia’s upcoming flagship device, is expected to land in Europe a few months later in June of this year. Murtazin didn’t provide any details on the Lumia 910 other than the inclusion of a 12-megapixel camera. AT&T will launch Nokia’s Lumia 900 this coming March according to a recent newsletter Nokia sent to developers.

Sony Ericsson "Kumquat" will launch as the Sony Xperia U
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony Ericsson
We just recently heard about the Sony Ericsson Kumquat, and mercifully it’s being reported that the midrange Android handset will ship with a different name. Of course the majority of phones ship with a name that is different from their code name, but few code names are as ungainly as “kumquat”.
The phone will apparently ship after Sony officially buries the “Ericsson” part of their branding; this is a move that was expected after Sony bought out Ericsson’s half of the joint venture. As a result the S-E Kumquat will come to market as the Sony Xperia U. The name still conjures up images of a college that specializes in mobile technology, but at least it’s consistent with the naming convention...

Galaxy S III is a quad-core-packing,12 megapixel-toting beast set for MWC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
While we already figured the Samsung Galaxy S III would be announced during Mobile World Congress next month, a tweet from Eldar Murtazin has further confirmed this, along with a few specs of the handset.Everything mentioned seems to be what we’d expect from Samsung for its next flagship device but we hadn’t heard that the handset would be rocking a 12 megapixel camera, even from rumors, until now. Given that HTC and Sony have already announced handsets with 16 and 12 megapixel cameras, it’s looking like the start of a new trend. With ridiculous camera sensors found on mobile phones today, we wish that some manufacturer would squeeze in a Xenon flash at some point.

Android 4.0 updates coming to Sony's tablets and Xperia phones this spring
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsTabletsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Sony will update the company’s Tablet S, Tablet P and Xperia line of smartphones to Android 4.0 in the spring, according to The Verge. Both tablets are already running Ice Cream Sandwich and are currently being tested behind the scenes. The company did not give a specific release date, however it plans to add “some really cool unique bits” to both tablets on top of the update. Last fall, Sony confirmed that its entire 2011 Xperia portfolio would receive an Android 4.0 update at a later date. Phones set to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update include the Xperia Arc, Arc S, Play, Neo, Neo V, Mini, Mini Pro, Active and Ray, as well as Sony Ericsson’s Live Walkman.
