APK puts Windows 95, 98 and XP, plus Linux on the EVO 3D

And here you thought Microsoft bringing Windows 8 to ARM was big news. Turns out, a member of the xda-developers forum has managed to make an APK that puts a variety of Redmond's x86 operating systems on the HTC EVO 3D and its 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon -- Windows 95, 98, XP and even your favorite flavor of Linux are all available for the three dee-equipped handset. All you need to do is install the Bochs Pentium emulator APK and the OS disk image of your choice, modify a couple files, and you'll be doing yesteryear's desktop computing on a handheld in no time. Feeling nostalgic? Detailed instructions how to do it yourself and the necessary files can be found at the source link belo...

Are these 6 T-Mobile models nearing their "End of Life"?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGHTCT-MobileSensation 4GmyTouch 4G SlideDoubleplaymyTouchmyTouch QAmaze 4G
It is the end of January and this time every year, carriers' thoughts start turning to making room on the shelves for the new batch of handsets that are coming. With MWC less than a month away, and a new batch of the most-up-to date models about to be displayed, TmoNews has obtained a leaked screenshot of an internal T-Mobile document. The document shows some devices on Controlled Distribution with no plans to replenish depleted inventories of these phones. The half-dozen Android models include three models manufactured by HTC which might actually get a little more time considering that the carrier continues to advertise some of them. The remaining three LG models are ones that not too many ...

Proposed congressional bill targets Carrier IQ and other mobile tracking software
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Democratic Representative Edward Markey of Massachusetts released a draft of his cell phone privacy bill on Monday. The Mobile Device Privacy Act is designed to protect consumers from tracking software such as Carrier IQ, which caused an uproar late last year when it was discovered to be secretly monitoring 150 million smartphone users. The bill would require companies to disclose the use of such tracking software and clarify exactly what information the software collects. Customers would have to consent to any data collected or transmitted, and third parties would have to file applications with the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission to ensure the data is bein...

Sprint's Samsung Galaxy Nexus gets its own landing and registration page
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
During the chaotic busyness of CES, we managed to get a quick look at Sprint’s upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device – the indomitable Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Just like its close Verizon sibling, we know that Sprint’s model will also be packing support for 4G LTE, however, we were left in the dark about its impending availability.
Although we’re not hearing about an actual release date just yet, it’s seemingly close considering that Sprint recently blessed the Android flagship with its very own landing and registration page. Heading over to Sprint’s web site, we now find a section dedicated to the upcoming smartphone – with some detailed specs mentioned and the option for notification...

The Nokia Lumia 710 is arriving on Canadian shores soon at an unprecedented low price of only $253 unlocked, and it seems it will be beating that February 6th launch date.

MetroPCS discontinues low-end $40 LTE unlimited plan
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
MetroPCS dropped what was once an unlimited plan of pretty good value. The $40 plan previously offered included unlimited talk, text, and Web for 4G LTE smartphone owners. MetroPCS isn’t replacing it with another low-end option for 4G customers but instead is pushing them toward the $50 and $60 options.
The $40 per month option has been nonexistent for a while, however. A spokesperson for MetroPCS confirmed with FierceWireless that the carrier stopped offering the plan late last year, specifically when it stopped selling the Samsung Craft. The Samsung Craft was the world’s first LTE handset, but it was an entry-level device with poor specs and not much to offer. Now that MetroPCS sells Andro...

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to Bell, Rogers and Telus in February
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Note
Those of you who seem to be more closely connected to the Maple Leaf than the pine needle might've jumped on the envious side at the news that folks across the border are getting their hands on the LTE Galaxy Note. Envy no more. Via blog post, Rogers has announced that Samsung's "phablet" creation will be surfing through its fresh 4G waves in the upcoming month. Aside from the Rogers branding we expect to see, it'll be hard to distinguish this Note from its AT&T brother, as it'll be identical in the specs department. Based on a page thrown up at Best Buy Canada, it looks as if it'll sell for $249.99 on a three-year contract (with Bell and Telus getting in on the fun, too), with the first of ...

Study says that apps are not important to smartphone owners
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
There are those who will tell you that the Palm Pre failed because it was launched without a fully stocked online app store. Some will tell you that they will not buy a Windows Phone model because of the smaller Windows Marketplace. BlackBerry App World has been compared by some to a KMart toy department after Xmas with nothing but empty shelves. But are apps that important to smartphone users? A new study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project suggests that apps are not so important after all.
According to the study, 68% of smartphone users open 5 or fewer apps at least once a week. Amazingly, 42% of those responding to the survey have not installed one app on their p...

Samsung Galaxy S III receives official recognition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
The rumour-mill is awash with Samsung Galaxy S III murmurs, following a couple of reports suggesting that the future flagship smartphone from the Korean company was facing a delay.
The Galaxy S III grapevine seemed to suggest that the next big Sammy Android instalment would be getting a February unveiling at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not so, says The Verge though who cite our old pals "people familiar with the matter" as saying that Samsung had originally planned to announce the handset at MWC but has now decided to delay the news.

Nokia Belle update ready for download on February 8th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Even in the midst of a big push to bring its Windows Phone 7 devices to the USA, Nokia hasn't forgotten its Symbian roots. It seems that "Belle," the company's update to Symbian Anna, will be available from February 8th, which is in line with its previous estimate of February. The news came this weekend via Nokia's Vietnamese website, although the page has since been taken offline. The update is apparently unsuitable for OTA download due to its large size, and so will be available through Nokia Suite on the PC, to be pushed to devices via USB.
Nokia has also revealed via Twitter that the N8, C7, and other devices are now shipping with Belle preinstalled in some regions. The new software will...

Samsung Edges Apple to Take Top Spot in 2011 Smartphone Sales
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungApple
It's really a shame that the intense competition between Apple and Samsung is marred by lawsuits and counter-suits over patent portfolios, because at the end of the day, it'd be far more entertaining to see these two attack each in ad campaigns than to let their respective lawyers smack one another with legal mumbo jumbo. Even with the distractions of multiple lawsuits, it's turning out to be a pretty tight race.

HTC Titan II passes through the FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCTitan II
We have some good news for those of you waiting on the HTC Titan II, the LTE version of the Windows Phone 7 phablet. The phone cleared the FCC with AT&T-flavored radios, and appears ready (by which we mean “legal”) to launch.
Of course marketing plans and product availability also drive the decision on when to release a new phone, but if the rumored March 18th release date holds up, the federals government won’t stand in the way of its release.
In addition to screen real estate that rivals Texas, the Titan II will be packing a larger battery (presumably to fend off the LTE juice-drain phenomena) and a 16 megapixel camera that will be tricked out with all the bells and whistles.

Cell phone users in North Korea to be punished as 'war criminals'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
The lifestyle of citizens in North Korea has been of major controversy in recent news, and now the government is revoking even more privileges from the country’s natives — privileges that affect the use of beloved mobile phones. In the 100-day mourning period after the death of former country leader Kim Jong-il, anyone caught using a cell phone will be punished as a “war criminal.”
The ban is presumably to strengthen the power of new leader Kim Jong-un. It’s almost as if Jong-un wants to let his people know that he will follow in his father’s footsteps with strong, authoritative power — ergo, he’s no softy. The prohibition of cell phones also weakens the citizens’ ability to plan a departure...

Motorola RAZR Developer's Edition to come with unlocked bootloader
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaRAZR
Motorola apparently plans on slicing and dicing the Motorola RAZR with the Motorola RAZR DE (Developer's Edition) coming in Europe with an unlocked bootloader out of the box. The company says that the phone "allows us to continue meeting our carrier and regulatory obligations, but also meets the needs being expressed by our developer community." Motorola's blog post (that has since been removed but remained on Google Reader), says that the MOTODEV site would offer support for unlocking, relocking and locating build files for the "DE' model.
The MOTODEV site is also where U.S. consumers will find out about when a similar model that is being built for the States will be ready. Motorola has rec...
