The Samsung Galaxy Y, an Android smartphone specifically designed for da yoof (well, the "Y" does stand for "Young"), is now available from Three, with pricing to appeal most to its target market.
On pay-as-you-go, the Galaxy Y costs £79.99. Then you can add on 30-day payment plans, All in One 15 and All in One 25. The former offers 300 any-network minutes, 3,000 texts and all-you-can-eat data for £15, the latter ups the minutes to 500 for £25.
The phone itself, as we revealed when we went hands-on with it during IFA last year, comes with Android 2.3, has a 3-inch QVGA (320x240) TFT LCD touchscreen, an 832Mhz processor, and a 2-megapixel camera. On board there's Samsung's Social Hub and the ...

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

We have been informed by a trusted source that HTC’s One X, one of the best smartphones ever to come out of Taiwan, will be available on AT&T as early as this week. We have also been told that AT&T may announce availability details tomorrow, and that the handset’s release should follow within five to seven days of the carrier’s announcement. AT&T’s version of the HTC One X swaps out the quad-core Tegra 3 processor for a dual-core Snapdragon CPU in order to accommodate 4G LTE connectivity, but unlike the complete redesign we saw on Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE, the AT&T version should be nearly identical to the international model.

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Good news came late today for all those Lumia 900 owners out there. It appears that Nokia has officially released the software update to resolve the handset's data connectivity issues -- a full three days early, in fact. Users may download the software through either Zune on the PC or Windows Phone 7 Connector on the Mac. For those who'd prefer to swap out their handset at an AT&T store, you have between now and April 21st to complete the exchange. Naturally, the limited-time offer remains in place for all those who purchase a Lumia 900 before April 21st to receive a $100 credit to their AT&T phone bill, courtesy of Nokia. Quite the graceful recovery, indeed.

A recent job listing has revealed that an Ubuntu Phone OS is currently under development. Canonical, the major developer behind the Ubuntu OS, is seeking a Business Development Manager for its Ubuntu Phone OS project that will be responsible for establishing relationships with phone vendors and telecommunications companies to promote the platform.
This isn’t the first time that Canonical has attempted to adapt Ubuntu to smartphones. It had previously tried to push Ubuntu Mobile, which ended in 2009, as well as Kubuntu Mobile and an ARM version of Ubuntu. Fans of the platform have designed several concepts for a mobile Ubuntu OS, one of which designed by Musl1m is shown above.

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

Sony announced that the Xperia S will soon be available at its stores across Canada. Beginning April 17th, fans of the Japanese company will be able to get the unlocked device and use it on Rogers’ network. Unfortunately we don’t know the price and can only speculate how much this powerful smartphone will cost — if I had to guess, I would say it will sell for some $650.
Now that’s all cool to see Sony bringing its new smartphone(s) to Canada, but it seems they failed to reach an agreement with local carriers. Let’s face it – most people buy phones with a contract and in that sense (without a carrier deal) I doubt the Japanese giant will be able to move enough units. Moreover, although the Xp...

LG Optimus 4X HD benchmarks impressive, on par with the HTC One X

LG Optimus 4X HD benchmarks impressive, on par with the HTC One X

Posted on Apr 11, 2012 by MG1

The LG Optimus 4X HD is no joke when it comes to specs - it’s the successor of the first dual-core phone ever, last year’s Optimus 2X, and it packs all four plus one cores of the latest Nvidia Tegra 3. And it’s got the benchmarks to prove it.
The 4X HD scored an impressive 4512 in Quadrant, and while that’s slightly short of the 4,909 scored by the HTC One X which also sports the Tegra 3 in its international version, the LG phone managed to beat the One X in AnTuTu. Below are the scores from both handsets in three different benchmarks. To put things in wider perspective, the HTC One S scored around 5,000 in Quadrant in our tests.

Some Nokia Lumia 900 units are having network connection issues

Some Nokia Lumia 900 units are having network connection issues

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

So, the Nokia Lumia 900 has landed to much fanfare, and many of the AT&T customers who ordered the smartphone in advance should have already received it. However, a percentage of these pre-ordered units appear to be plagued by a glitch that prevents them from connecting to a data network, be it 2G, 3G, or 4G LTE.
The issue is already being discussed on multiple online communities, including the Nokia Support Discussions and XDA-Developers, and a tipster of ours, who claims to be an AT&T employee, has confirmed that the problem is real indeed. "These devices were mass produced in a plant in mexico and there is a defect with the imei's registering to the data network on 2g, 3g and 4g data", sa...

Walmart Nokia Lumia 900s now shipping

Walmart Nokia Lumia 900s now shipping

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

Its pretty annoying when you pre-order a phone and it arrives after it becomes available in stores. While AT&T buyers did not have this problem, and in fact had their handsets 2 days before general availability Amazon handsets only shipped today, suggesting arrival tomorrow.
Good news for buyers at WalMart, where the handset was also selling at extremely low prices, is that their phones are now also on the way, shipping from Texas. Hopefully they will also show up on your doorstep early tomorrow.

HTC One S to launch via T-Mobile on April 25th according to training slides

HTC One S to launch via T-Mobile on April 25th according to training slides

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

Carriers just don't throw a device on the floor and say to the reps, "go sell it." There is training involved as the reps learn all they can about a specific device. Apparently, T-Mobile reps have just through a presentation on the HTC One S and leaked shots of some of the slides used in the training session show that the nation's third largest carrier will be launching the device on April 25th. This dovetails with earlier reports that the phone would be launching late this month.

Droid RAZR soak test suddenly shifts to ICS test?

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

We reported last week that the Droid RAZR soak test was not going to include Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich. Today, the story got more complicated. A tipster speaking to Droid-Life suggested that ICS was inserted at a late date into the soak test. Apparently, the admin of the Motorola soak test forum said the following:
Looks like we got a surprise people. This regular soak test has now turned into an official soak test for Android 4.0 also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. Please subscribe to this feed for updates and more information will be posted as soon as possible.

No 3D technology for Samsung smartphones

No 3D technology for Samsung smartphones

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesSamsung

Apple is rumoured to be working on one. HTC and LG already have one. Yet it seems Samsung has no plans to follow suit by introducing 3D technology to its smartphone range.
Speculation had been rife that the new Samsung Galaxy S III might house some kind of 3D technology when it arrives later this year be it a display, camera or both.
In terms of a 3D display Samsung has vehemently denied working on one for the Galaxy S III or any other potential handset for that matter, which may put to bed any hope of a 3D camera too.

Samsung Mobile Display researchers arrested for leaking AMOLED screen tech to the competition

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

In exchange for $168, 544 in kickbacks, a 46-year-old former researcher at Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) has been arrested in Korea, and 11 other employees detained, for leaking Samsung's "small mask scanning" AMOLED display tech to the competition.
Everybody wants in on the AMOLED gravy train, and the researcher, who left for a rival company in November after being passed for promotion, reportedly also tried to shop the goods to Chinese display makers.
That might explain the sudden accomplishments of a few Chinese screen manufacturers we told yo about not long ago, resulting in not only ramped up AMOLED production, but reportedly also building factories for next-gen OLED technologies, which...
