Samsung unpacks the Galaxy tomorrow, we'll be liveblogging the London event right here!

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Is that Galaxy S II feeling a bit stale? It's just about time for Samsung to name a successor to the massively popular smartphone, live at the company's Mobile Unpacked event at the Earls Court Olympic venue. We'll surely see a brand new mainstream handset make its debut, but what's not quite as clear is what other gadgets Samsung plans to show off in London. With defined divisions, the Korean device maker's "Mobile Unpacked" event title implies that Android phones will steal the show, so it's unlikely that we'll see an updated Tab or two. We have 24 hours and change to find out for sure, however, so bookmark this page to stay abreast of the news as it happens in our liveblog. The show kicks...

The numbers for Samsung's first quarter of 2012 are in and as it expected they are up sharply over the same period from 2011. After predicting profits of 5.8 trillion won it managed to top that, notching an operating profit of 5.85 trillion won ($5.16 billion US) for the quarter, a 98 percent gain over a year ago. Phones accounted for 73 percent of the profit, contributing 4.27 trillion won to the bottom line. As the world awaits the debut of what we assume will be the Samsung Galaxy S III May 3rd powered by its Exynos 4 Quad CPU, there's clearly no shortage of demand for the Galaxy S II and Note. Sales of chips and TVs decreased from last quarter, but like its competitor LG, growing sales o...

Google says Galaxy Nexus code is a "trade secret"

Google says Galaxy Nexus code is a "trade secret"

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

This is kind of a strange story. As you may know, Apple has a lawsuit pending against Samsung in California which also includes a motion for a preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. In this case, Apple has requested that Google uncover differences, if there are any, between the Android code released in the Android Open Source Project repository and that running on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Not surprisingly, Google doesn't want to give Apple any more information than it needs to, and "has already agreed to produce source code underlying" Android on the Galaxy Nexus. What is strange is the reasoning Google gives in order to avoid fulfilling this request. Google says that com...

Apple and Samsung to sit down for mediation

Apple and Samsung to sit down for mediation

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

Apple and Samsung have been going at it seemingly forever in the battle of ‘who infringed who’s patent.’ Recently, both companies have expressed an interest in settling their differences by way of mediation, which is set to begin on May 21 and 22. In this mediation, both tech giants are to discuss possible settlements to their IP differences, and to draw up for the judge presiding over it “a candid evaluation of the parties’ likelihood of prevailing on the claims and defenses.”
Even though talks are in development at this time, it doesn’t guarantee discussions will result in a settlement between the two. Tim Cook has said that he dislikes litigation, but he won’t stand for what Apple has cal...

Samsung denies having any part of “Wake Up” protest

Samsung denies having any part of “Wake Up” protest

Posted on Apr 30, 2012 by MG1

While Samsung is known to unleash some marketing ads that poke fun at loyal Apple followers, the Korean manufacturer says it had no part in the display that took place outside an Australian Apple Store the other day.
Early reports suggested that this display was tied into Samsung’s upcoming device release, which many suggest will be the Galaxy S III, and frankly, it didn’t seem entirely out of character considering Samsung’s “Dude, you’re a barista” campaign, "Samsunged" campaign and more recently its depiction of sheep in its latest teaser trailer.
Even though all signs seemed to point to Sammy, Samsung released a statement to Slash Gear earlier today saying, “Samsung Electronics Australia ...

Samsung pays people to protest outside Australian Apple Store; goal is to mock iSheep culture

Samsung pays people to protest outside Australian Apple Store; goal is to mock iSheep culture

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

Samsung is really trying to push this image of Apple iPhone and Apple iPad users as sheep. After releasing a video that did everything but directly call out all users of Apple devices as sheep, the Korean based manufacturer has ratcheted things up a notch. This week, Samsung paid an Australian marketing company called Tongue to provide protesters to stand in front of an Australian Apple Store and scream, "Wake Up!" The protesters were bused to a location and started the chant that is designed to tell iOS users that they need to wake up and stop blindly following other iOS users.

When the Galaxy S III does land in the US, it might not have that rumored quad-core chip. That’s according to a Samsung executive speaking to The Korea Times, who told the publication that Galaxy S IIIs in different markets will feature different chips. In Europe, the GSIII will feature Samsung’s Exynos quad-core processor, while Qualcomm’s chips will be used in the United States.

Samsung's 17-inch Series 7 Chronos dances over the Ivy Bridge

Since Ivy Bridge finally trotted down the yellow brick road, there's been a growing number of tin-men waiting for their hearts. Samsung's 17-inch Series 7 Chronos, it seems, was also a member of that club. We first saw the desktop replacement back at CES, and that "next-gen" processor we reported is confirmed as a 2.3GHz i7 3615QM, while the suspected ATI GPU seems to have been switched out for an NVIDIA GeForce 650M. Memory and storage are taken care of by 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB SATA HDD respectively. For your human inputs, that 17.3-inch (1920 x 1080) non-reflective screen will fill your eyes, while JBL speakers take care of your ears. As for the computer's, there's HDMI, two USB 3.0 ports,...

Samsung is having a veritable leak festival this week as far as their Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone goes, today’s latest being right up front and center in the benchmarking app AnTuTu. This app synthetically tests several elements in the device you run it on including graphics and CPU processing power. What you’ll find here is not only details and specifications in the device, but that it appears very much to be the new king of the pack as far as this particular test goes.

Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as basis for Galaxy S3

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

Looking for something a bit more solid than a third-party benchmark? We can do that. "Already in production the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May," the horse's mouth reveals. Samsung boasts that the new 32nm 1.4GHz quad-core processor flaunts twice the processing power over its predecessor, thanks to its High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power technology. The net energy savings? About 20-percent. "The application processor is a crucial element in providing our customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices," explains Hankil Yoon, Senior VP of Product Strategy Team at Samsung, "Samsung's next Galaxy ...

The Samsung Galaxy S III is almost upon us (just a week to go until the big announcement), but not everyone can afford the top of the line smartphones. Samsung has today announced that its midrange model, the Galaxy S Advance, will be shipping in a few days time on April 30th in the UK. It might not quite be all singing and dancing, but it’s a pretty respectable offering.

SamMobile spotted a couple of references in Samsung's own Kies app that confirms that the GT-i9300 model is for the Samsung Galaxy S III. The Kies software, used for syncing, shows two variants of the Samsung Galaxy S III. One is labeled as the Samsung GT-i9300 and other is the Samsung GT-i9300T. The "T" could stand for a different radio frequency used in a different country or by a different carrier.
