RIM trims $300 from BlackBerry PlayBook prices

Research In Motion’s debut tablet hasn’t bowled people over like the company had hoped, and now it is pushing a huge sale in hopes of drumming up interest during the holiday shopping season. For a limited time through participating retailers, RIM is offering its BlackBerry PlayBook slate for $300 below MSRP, representing savings of up to 60%. Sale pricing comes in at $199.99 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB version and $399 for the 64GB model, and participating retailers include Best Buy, Walmart RadioShack and more.
After selling 500,000 PlayBooks into channels during the tablet’s first quarter of availability, RIM sold just 200,000 units to distributors last quarter. Analyst checks in...

Adobe may have killed off Flash for both TVs and mobile devices, but that isn't stopping RIM from continuing to support it on the PlayBook. In a statement provided to All Things D yesterday, the BlackBerry manufacturer confirmed that it's not giving up on the dream just yet, because it's one of the Flash Player source code licensees that Adobe will continue to support post mortem:

RIM confirms PlayBook OS 2.0 delayed until February, still no BBM in sight

Well, we hope you weren't expecting to have PlayBook 2.0 up and running on your BlackBerry tablet any time soon, cause it's been officially delayed till at least February. Word has come straight from the mouth (well, keyboard) of David Smith, senior vice president for the PlayBook project. In a blog post Smith announced that RIM would be holding back on the release to ensure many of the new features, including native email and enterprise app deployment, work as advertised. “You expect better of us, I expect better of us.” So RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis opened the company’s apologetic BlackBerry press conference this morning, before swiftly pointing out that services have now been “fully restored”. As for compensation, however, fellow co-CEO Jim Balsillie said RIM has no idea, at present, what or even if that could be “Our focus has been 100-percent on getting services restored,” he told investors and journalists, “that’s something we’re going to focus on now, but it hasn’t been our priority overnight.”

Who says that developer conferences are boring? Well, we’d bet that attendees of BlackBerry DevCon Americas, which is being held between October 18th to the 20th in San Francisco, are going to be ecstatic knowing what’s in store for them at the event.

Last weekend we noticed that RIM was experimenting with a $200 price cut in Canada, however, with the unveiling of the Amazon Fire the company has decided to not just move its discount across the border, but make it permanent. The 16GB entry level playbook now starts at only $299 for Wi-Fi only, and goes up by $100 increments when moving up to the 32GB, and 64GB configurations.

Following news that multiple retailers across North America have begun to offer deep discounts on Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, retail giant Best Buy is now offering the best deal yet on RIM’s troubled tablet. BGR reported on Monday that retailers such as Staples and Office Depot were offering sale pricing on the PlayBook, and Best Buy Canada was among the shops mentioned. RIM calls PlayBook discontinuation 'pure fiction'

Research In Motion on Thursday responded to a market rumor suggesting that production of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet had been stopped, and it was considering an exit from the tablet market. “RIM doesn’t typically comment on rumors, but any suggestion that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued is pure fiction,” a RIM spokesperson told BGR in an email. “RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market.” BGR reported earlier on a note from Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh stating that RIM’s manufacturing partner Quanta had been ordered to discontinue production of the BlackBerry PlayBook in light of weak sales. Vinh also said that RIM was canceling development of future tablets.

RIM has 800,000 PlayBooks in excess inventory

Research in Motion (RIM) has nearly 800,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets sitting idle in inventory. RIM had $1.372 billion in inventory at the end of last quarter, up from $618 million at the end of February, according to findings from the Guardian.
RIM’s PlayBook was manufactured by Quanta Computer at their Taiwan factory. Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao said that the company had shipped 1.5 million PlayBooks in the first half. Production has declined significantly as of late as RIM struggles with excess inventory.
Last week RIM announced they had only shipped 200,000 tablets in the second quarter. Earlier accounts from the company say they shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in the first quarter...

BlackBerry PlayBook Production Cut by Quanta

The BlackBerry PlayBook looked good at the very begining, but than big issues got discovered and consumers did not catch on. RIM has supposedly sold less than 800,000 PlayBooks in the first half of 2011. It is not clear though how many of them are actually in consumer hands. Digitimes reports that Quanta Computer is supposed to significantly cut back the production lines for the Playbook.
According to the report Quanta Computer set up a special production faciility in Taiwan with 2,000 workers to make sure the Chinese to not clone the Playbook. Quanta is said to cut back the work force by 50% and shipment of Playbooks already dropped to 100,000 units in the third quarter.

Best Buy cuts up to $150 off BlackBerry PlayBook

Best Buy has kicked off a promotion for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that slashes the price by as much as $150. The deal isn’t quite as dramatic as the HP TouchPad fire sale of course, but it’s still decent for those that have been considering the PlayBook, especially the 64GB model.
The sale offers a $50 discount on the 16GB and 32GB PlayBook models bringing the prices down to $449.99 and $549.99, respectively. The $150 discount goes towards the 64GB model, which oddly brings the price down in line with the 32GB model at $549.99. That’s a sign that they’re way overstocked on the 64GB model, because seriously who would pay the same amount for the smaller storage capacity?

Though Slacker and Pandora have made the migration, the BlackBerry App World’s selection of music apps is pretty limited compared to competing platforms. In fact, the App World is found wanting in a couple different categories. But that doesn’t mean RIM isn’t open to improvement, albeit incremental improvement. This may not be much of a surprise but Bloomberg is reporting that the BlackBerry smartphones running the QNX software will definitely be able to utilize Android apps. That means the upcoming BlackBerry Colt may launch with a healthy amount of apps.
We already knew that the BlackBerry PlayBook with QNX would be able to run Android apps through an emulator and Simon even got it working on his tablet. The experience wasn’t amazing but this was an early build, so we have to cut RIM a bit of slack.
