Nokia Nearby tells your S40 where the action's at

Just because you're packing an S40 or S60 device doesn't mean you should have to miss out on the haps. That's why Nokia Beta Labs is debuting a pilot app called Nokia Nearby, a hyper-local search app -- geared toward emerging markets with a heavy concentration of S40 handsets -- that helps you find restaurants, movie theaters and other locations within close range of your current location. Fortunately, GPS isn't required for the service to work properly, which makes it even more tempting to at least try out. Millennial: Android Tops iOS For The Eighth Month With 61 Percent Of Mobile Ad Impressions In July

It’s no secret that Android is growing at a fast clip, especially over the past year. As Millennial Media, one of the largest mobile ad networks in the U.S., reported recently Android’s mobile ad impression share went up from 6 percent in March to 2010 to 54 percent of ad impression share in June 2011, eclipsing iOS. July’s report shows similar growth patterns, with In July, Android showed particularly strong growth, with its mobile ad impression share by OS increasing by 15 percent in the month, taking 61 percent of the impressions on Millennial’s network. This is the eighth straight month Android has topped iOS.

Nokia announces Symbian Belle alongside three new devices

True to Monday's teaser, Nokia unveiled its latest update to the Symbian OS as well as a few new devices. Belle is indeed coming, and it's heading to the Nokia 700, 701 and 600 in the third quarter of this year. The successor to Anna brings NFC sharing and pairing functionality to the table, along with three additional home screens (bumped up to six), a dynamic lock screen, live widgets in five different sizes, and a pull-down taskbar and notification menu. Fortunately, the new handsets announced today aren't the only beneficiaries of the upgrade: the N8, E6, E7, X7, C7, C6-01 and Oro will all get Belle at a yet-unknown later date.

Nokia Symbian Belle coming Wednesday 24 August

Nokia is about to launch the next version of Symbian - Symbian Belle - according to a teaser which the company has inadvertently confirmed on its Facebook fan page.
The teaser which simply says: “It’s almost time to try something new” has a countdown timer with (at time of writing) 46 hours 56 minutes and 30 seconds to go.
That end time gives us a Wednesday 24 August launch, the “something new” announcement presumably set for 1:45pm GMT.

The fact that Nokia and Acer are busily preparing Windows Phones is no secret, but Sea Ray and W4 may not be the manufacturers' only projects. Elbert Perez, a Windows Phone game developer with a keen eye for statistics, was looking through a list of the various devices that run his games, and a couple gems stood out -- the Nokia 800 and Acer M310.

Report: Compal to start shipping Nokia’s first WP7 smartphones, 2 million in total

According to Dan Nystedt, ex IDG news, Compal is to start shipments of their first batch of Windows Phone 7 smartphones for Nokia, expected to include the Nokia Sea Ray.
The shipments would be in time for the announcement and simultaneous release of the handset at Nokia World in London on October 26th, and will apparently total 2 million handsets in Q4 2011.
If Nokia does manage to sell all of those handsets it would mean a substantial bump in the number of Windows Phone 7 handsets sold in 2011, currently likely sitting around 5 million.
Nokia has said in 2012 volume shipments will start which will flood the market with a variety of handsets at a variety of price points.

Are those the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone handsets? Hard to tell, but the video and images below sent to MyNokiaBlog from a tipster claiming to be a Microsoft insider (even though using an OVI email account) look very polished and professionally done. Sure, the video below mashes together seemingly new content with old marketing stuff, including some old Microsoft Office Labs footage. But while those could be manipulated images (likely taken from the video below), hands down to the artist, who could well defend a thesis on faking pictures in Photoshop.

Windows Phone 7 to make iOS and Android look outdated says Nokia's president

Nokia president and head of North American operations, Chris Weber (no, not the former NBA star) has laid down the gauntlet. In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.

Voice texting demoed for Nokia Windows Phone, Mango to have voice map navigation as well

While it's probably nothing Vlingo doesn't do already, the head of Nokia US has demonstrated voice texting while driving for a briefing seminar at the Center for Automotive Research.
The interesting tidbit here is that this tech will be available in Nokia Windows Phones and other Mango devices, and the Windows Team blog even posted how it is supposed to work while you are driving:

Nokia may be planning to unveil its first Windows Phone later this month, the unwired reports. The site claims to have obtained an invitation to a party hosted by both Nokia and Microsoft. Scheduled to take place on August 17th during the annual GamesCom trade show in Cologne, Germany, the event will apparently include a raffle of three Xbox 360 consoles and three Windows Phones built by Nokia. The invitation does note that the aforementioned Windows Phones will be delivered to winners “as soon as available,” so we’re not entirely convinced the event will follow any sort of announcement. While Nokia busily beavers away on its first batch of Windows Phone 7 devices, it is also working hard to make sure that its app store integrates seamlessly into the OS' ecosystem.
Speaking with TechRadar, Nokia's Senior Vice President of Developer and Marketplace, Marco Argenti explained that Nokia is determined to avoid fragmenting the ecosystem with apps that are incompatible with other manufacturers' handsets
