While technology can help to make our lives easier, it can also be extremely frustrating when things stop working. Some TomTom satellite navigation systems have reportedly been affected by a bug that renders them useless. TomTom say that the units are affected by a leap year bug embedded in the software, and that they’re working on a fix.

If we were the betting type -- and hell, some of us really are -- we'd wager a crisp ten spot that LightSquared isn't going to assuage the FCC's concerns over those pesky GPS interference issues in the next few weeks. After previously stating that the interference test reports were rigged by GPS insiders, the upstart LTE network is now getting political with its argument and is calling on the FCC to institute new standards for GPS equipment. There is a lot of money at stake with LightSquared's wholesale mobile network. Besides high priced contracts with Sprint and other potential customers, many vulture investors are investing big bucks hoping to have a say in the restructuring of the company if it goes bankrupt. At the heart of the matter is the interference to GPS systems that the government claims comes from LightSquared's technology. LightSquared asks NASA for investigation into GPS advisory board

LightSquared has asked NASA’s inspector general to investigate whether or not an advisor to federal agencies has conflicts of interest that make it unfair for him to determine whether or not LightSquared’s 4G LTE network interferes with GPS networks. The advisor was named as Bradford Parkinson, who works both as a vice chairman of Trimble Navigation, an industry board that advises federal agencies on GPS technology, and also as a Stanford University professor, The Wall Street Journal said Friday. “His involvement on both has been known by everyone involved since concerns of GPS interference by LightSquared were raised,” a GPS coalition spokesperson Dale Leibach told The Wall Street Journal. ...

Last week, the results from the latest testing of LightSquared's mobile broadband network were revealed by a leaked document, and they did not look very promising. In particular, the network that the LTE wholesaler is trying to deploy was still found to interfere with GPS communications despite the company's claims that it had found a solution to the issue.

GPS III Satellite Testbed Delivered to Final Assembly

The death of dedicated satnav cometh as TomTom posts poor Q3 sales?

TomTom has recently posted some rather unhealthy Q3 sales as the company sees further drop in demand for dedicated GPS units.
The Dutch company, who has been at the forefront of the satnav industry for many years aims to cut 50 million euros in costs, which will hopefully help it turn a decent profit in the coming months. The savings will also mean job cuts ofr many of its staff.
Despite a 50 per cent rise in its Q3 profit, due in large degree to depreciation of the euro against the dollar, it seems TomTom struggled - with sales falling 10 per cent in the same period to 336 million euros.
