Sony ST26i benchmarks reveal Android 4.0, 4-inch FWVGA display and lackluster performance

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Rumors of the Sony ST26i smartphone have been swirling for a while now, but up until recently, we've had nothing to sink our teeth into. Thankfully, we've now come across an OpenGL benchmark test and system profile for the yet-to-be-announced handset, and while this one seems destined for emerging markets and budget-minded consumers, the ST26i will come with just enough niceties to hold its head high. First and foremost, the system profile reveals Ice Cream Sandwich on the handset, and even better, it'll include a 4-inch, 854 x 480 display -- none of that HVGA crap here. To keep costs low, sacrifices had to be made: the phone will include a Qualcomm MSM7627A SoC, which includes a pedestrian ...

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

Sony announced that the Xperia S will soon be available at its stores across Canada. Beginning April 17th, fans of the Japanese company will be able to get the unlocked device and use it on Rogers’ network. Unfortunately we don’t know the price and can only speculate how much this powerful smartphone will cost — if I had to guess, I would say it will sell for some $650.
Now that’s all cool to see Sony bringing its new smartphone(s) to Canada, but it seems they failed to reach an agreement with local carriers. Let’s face it – most people buy phones with a contract and in that sense (without a carrier deal) I doubt the Japanese giant will be able to move enough units. Moreover, although the Xp...

Sony applies for 'head control' patent to frustrate non-verbal communicators

Sony applies for 'head control' patent to frustrate non-verbal communicators

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesSony

The company formerly known as Sony Ericsson applied for a patent in 2010 that's yet to be granted, but you never know, one day it might wind up in a handset near you. Having recently introduced the "floating touch" Xperia Sola that doesn't require your hands to make contact with the display, the next logical step is to make the whole thing controlled just with the movement of your head. Wearing a Bluetooth earpiece with a motion sensor, you then map a custom motion onto a phone action, so shaking your head could answer a call, nodding up and down ends it and going from side-to-side will fire up an app. Designed for when it's not safe to jab at your phone (i.e. driving) we think it's a pretty...

Sony Xperia S now has access to PlayStation store

Sony Xperia S now has access to PlayStation store

Posted on Mar 14, 2012 by MG1

During this year's CES in Las Vegas, many smartphone fans became smitten with the Sony Xperia S. With that unique transparent strip about 10% up from the bottom of the phone, Sony has designed a unique handset that is the manufacturer's flagship model. When the phone was launched overseas, Sony did not have time to complete PlayStation support for the model, so those who purchased the Sony Xperia S up to now have had to live with a placeholder link instead of the real live PlayStation Store. But, as you might have guessed from the tone of this piece, things have now changed.
Starting on Tuesday, those who clicked on the app for the PS Store were taken to a web page where the storefront and t...

Sony Xperia S now shipping globally, Ion to join the world tour come summer

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Those of you that have been waiting to get your grubby paws on Sony's Xperia S are in luck, as Sony just confirmed during its keynote that it's started shipping globally, with the first units available at Sony's Barcelona store during MWC. Those with stellar memory will recall that's more concrete than its former Q1 suggestion. To recap, those taking the plunge will be privy to a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, a 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel camera all wrapped in a gorgeous shell -- albeit one that runs Gingerbread, with an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in due course. Additionally the electronics giant also confirmed the Xperia Ion will be available globally, however those interested ...

Sony Xperia Ion launching worldwide this summer

Sony Xperia Ion launching worldwide this summer

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Sony introduced the Xperia Ion at CES last month, but now Sony Mobile President Bert Nordberg has announced that the handset will launch in markets around the world this summer. The handset has a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, NFC support, and 12-megapixel camera. There's no word on whether the LTE radio will be carried over into the global version, though.
In our hands-on at CES, we liked the Ion's solid feel and lightweight construction, and were impressed by the display and camera. Sony hasn't been any more forthcoming on when the Xperia Ion will see an upgrade to Android 4.0, but as things stand the software adds only a couple of light customizations over ...
