Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix

Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix "P" series with P510 and P310

Posted on Feb 02, 2012 by MG15

Nikon has updated its photographer-friendly P series with the Coolpix P510 and P310. The P510 gains GPS and an extended zoom, now reaching from 24-1000mm equivalent. This 42x range is likely to be quite a challenge for its VR image stabilization system, so we'll be interested to see how it performs. The P310 is a more subtle upgrade of the P300. Like the P510 it gains a 920k dot LCD and moves to using a 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor, with all the high-speed, multi-shot image processing modes it enables. More than any of the technology changes, we're most interested to see the addition of a 'Fn' button on the front - if this can be set to control useful functions, it may improve the handling of a...

Fujifilm X-S1 now available in the UK

Fujifilm X-S1 now available in the UK

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

The Fujifilm X-S1, which Pocket-lint had a brief fling with over in Vegas at CES, has hit UK shops, priced up at £699.
The Fujifilm X-S1 is a bridge camera that features a Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens and the same EXR sensor technology as the brand's X10 compact.
The fixed lens offers a range of 24-624mm (35mm equivalent), and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Couple this with Fujifilm’s proprietary Intelligent Digital Zoom and you're apparently looking at a doubled focal range without a drop in picture quality. That means that it is possible to zoom up to a boasted 1,248mm.

Panasonic brings out ZS15, ZS20 compact superzooms

Panasonic brings out ZS15, ZS20 compact superzooms

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Panasonic used the lead-in to the CP+ show to introduce even more Lumix point-and-shoot cameras past what it showed earlier in the month. The 20X, 24-480mm ZS20 as the flagship hopes to cure some of the problems of compact superzooms with a new internal structure and nano surface-coated lens that hope to cut back on lens flares and ghosting. A new GPS system both handles the usual geotagging and can even load map data from a DVD like one would car navigation, filling in much more information for 82 countries, such as landmarks.

At this year’s International CES show in Las Vegas, we spoke to Tetsuya Yamamoto, General Manager of Nikon’s Development Headquarters within its Imaging Division. We discussed the market’s reaction to the 1 J1 and V1, and how the system might evolve in the future. According to Yamamoto, Nikon has been pleased with the success of the 1 System, especially the J1, in the American market but that even before the system's launch 'we were very confident that there were customers out there who would gravitate towards the V1 and the J1'. Yamamoto told us that Motion Snapshot, which combines a still image with slow motion video in a single capture is a feature that Nikon is keen to improve in the nex...

Nikon D700 and D300s Discontinued

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG3

Nikon Japan has quietly added the Nikon D700 and Nikon D300s to the official list of discontinued cameras. This means that the Japanese manufacturer has ceased the production of these DSLRs, but they are still available from a number of on- and off-line vendors around the world. The cameras are being phased out without any successor in sight (although as you’d expect, rumours abound about a D800 being just around the corner).

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG3

Sony has announced three CMOS-based compact cameras - the Cyber-Shots DSC-TX200V, DSC-WX50 and DSC-WX70. The TX200V is a GPS-equipped card-style touch-screen camera with Sony's latest 18MP back-lit CMOS sensor. It also includes the company's fast AF system that aims to reduce focus times down as low as 0.1 sec and 0.2 sec in low light. It can also grab 13.5MP stills while shooting 1080p60 video. It also has an WVGA-equivalent OLED touch screen and glass front panel, spoiling the whole thing only slightly by using Micro SD cards. The WX50 meanwhile offers the older 16MP and 5x, 25-125mm zoom.

Rumours are suggesting that Samsung will announce an NX20 in February, which will then be available from April.

Sony redesigns back-lit CMOS for improved smartphone cameras

Sony redesigns back-lit CMOS for improved smartphone cameras

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

Sony has developed CMOS designs to offer improved performance on small sensors and is planning three such sensors for smartphones and similar devices. The 'Stacked CMOS' design builds on the backlit CMOS idea by building the light-sensitive photo element on top of the processing circuitry, rather than combining them in a single layer. This creates a greater light-sensitive area while also making more space for processing circuitry. The company has also demonstrated two feaures that use the extra circuitry space of the design.
The first of these features is what Sony is calling RGBW Coding, which appears to be another attempt at including clear (white) pixels in the sensor's color filter arra...

Sony develops new CMOS sensor tech

Sony develops new CMOS sensor tech

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: CamerasSony

Sony has announced that it has developed a new "next-generation" back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which it claims "embodies the continuous evolution of the camera."
The new sensor layers the pixel section containing formations of back-illuminated structure pixels onto chips containing the circuit section for signal processing.
This is in place of supporting substrates for conventional back-illuminated CMOS image sensors.
This means the usual supporting structure is omitted and the two sections can be produced separately.
As a result Sony claims that the structure can achieve further enhancement in image quality, superior functionalities and a more compact size. Faster speeds coupled with ...

Polaroid Announces Android-Powered SC1630 Digital Camera

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Cameras are built into virtually every smartphone and tablet sold today, but even the best are a bit lacking in image quality. In order to keep things small, the cameras used fixed focal length lenses an very small image sensors, which has left them lagging behind when compared to dedicated digital cameras.
Polaroid's SC1630 digital camera aims to change that. The 16-megapixel shooter features a 3x (36-108mm f/3.1-5.6 equivalent) optical zoom lens, a feature that sets it apart from other Android devices.
