Sony has officially announced that it will start its Android 4.0 upgrade for the 2011 line of Xperia smartphones today. Initially, this update is for Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray owners located in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Norway. The software rollout will expand to other global markets over the next 4 to 6 weeks.
The Ice Cream Sandwich update is not being conducted over the air, therefore, you will need to tether your device to a Mac or PC. Those with eligible handsets can head on over to http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions to perform the upgrade.

Sony revealed the timeline for upcoming Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) updates to their Xperia range of smartphones on their blog Friday, as well as suggesting that they are set to receive the update prior to their tablet models.
"Our developers have been hard-at-work to ensure we’re on track and the highest standards are met to deliver you the best possible user experience on Xperia 2011 smartphones with the upgrade to Android 4.0 platform release," Sony’s blog post read.

Sony Ericsson on Tuesday began offering its Xperia arc S and Xperia neo V smartphones in the US as unlocked devices. The former costs $450 while the latter is priced at $350. The arc S gets a 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 2.3.
It brings with it Sony's Qriocity services, including Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. It also sports an 8.1-megapixel camera with an Exmor R sensor that has 3D capability. A 4.2-inch, 854x480-pixel display is present along with an FM radio, and an 8GB memory card is bundled with the device. An HDMI output lets users connect it to HDTVs.

Skype for Android has received a major new update, adding a further 14 devices to the video calling party - including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Motorola Xoom.

The mobile video calling option landed for Android in June, but only on four handsets - the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and the Google Nexus S.

Sony Ericsson announced a mid-range, 3.7-inch Xperia Neo V phone -- equipped with a Facebook-enhanced Android 2.3.4 release that will also be rolled out to all its Xperia phones in October. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless decided not to offer the Samsung Galaxy S II that's expected to be unveiled on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile on Aug. 29.
