RIM plans to give out BlackBerry PlayBooks for free to attendees of DevCon

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Who says that developer conferences are boring? Well, we’d bet that attendees of BlackBerry DevCon Americas, which is being held between October 18th to the 20th in San Francisco, are going to be ecstatic knowing what’s in store for them at the event.
From the sound of it, RIM will be handing out free BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to each and every registered attendee at the event. Typically, attendees are normally showered with smaller gifts such as sweatshirts, jackets, or some other wearable apparel, but this time around, they’re really spicing things up. In fact, this is the second time this year that RIM is going handing out PlayBooks seeing that they did the same thing for BlackBerry Wor...

Playbook Price Cut, $300 Made Permanent — Too Little Too Late?

Playbook Price Cut, $300 Made Permanent — Too Little Too Late?

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Last weekend we noticed that RIM was experimenting with a $200 price cut in Canada, however, with the unveiling of the Amazon Fire the company has decided to not just move its discount across the border, but make it permanent. The 16GB entry level playbook now starts at only $299 for Wi-Fi only, and goes up by $100 increments when moving up to the 32GB, and 64GB configurations.

BlackBerry PlayBook now just $299.99 and up from Best Buy

BlackBerry PlayBook now just $299.99 and up from Best Buy

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Following news that multiple retailers across North America have begun to offer deep discounts on Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, retail giant Best Buy is now offering the best deal yet on RIM’s troubled tablet. BGR reported on Monday that retailers such as Staples and Office Depot were offering sale pricing on the PlayBook, and Best Buy Canada was among the shops mentioned. Now, Best Buy here in the U.S. is following suit and knocking $200 off of its PlayBook pricing. Unlike other retailers, however, Best Buy is taking off the full $200 at the point of purchase, rather than offering a $100 discount and a $100 gift card like other retailers, including Best Buy Canada, are doing. RIM calls PlayBook discontinuation 'pure fiction'

RIM calls PlayBook discontinuation 'pure fiction'

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Research In Motion on Thursday responded to a market rumor suggesting that production of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet had been stopped, and it was considering an exit from the tablet market. “RIM doesn’t typically comment on rumors, but any suggestion that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued is pure fiction,” a RIM spokesperson told BGR in an email. “RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market.” BGR reported earlier on a note from Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh stating that RIM’s manufacturing partner Quanta had been ordered to discontinue production of the BlackBerry PlayBook in light of weak sales. Vinh also said that RIM was canceling development of future tablets.

RIM has 800,000 PlayBooks in excess inventory

RIM has 800,000 PlayBooks in excess inventory

Posted on Sep 22, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion (RIM) has nearly 800,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets sitting idle in inventory. RIM had $1.372 billion in inventory at the end of last quarter, up from $618 million at the end of February, according to findings from the Guardian.
RIM’s PlayBook was manufactured by Quanta Computer at their Taiwan factory. Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao said that the company had shipped 1.5 million PlayBooks in the first half. Production has declined significantly as of late as RIM struggles with excess inventory.
Last week RIM announced they had only shipped 200,000 tablets in the second quarter. Earlier accounts from the company say they shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in the first quarter...

BlackBerry PlayBook Production Cut by Quanta

BlackBerry PlayBook Production Cut by Quanta

Posted on Sep 22, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry PlayBook looked good at the very begining, but than big issues got discovered and consumers did not catch on. RIM has supposedly sold less than 800,000 PlayBooks in the first half of 2011. It is not clear though how many of them are actually in consumer hands. Digitimes reports that Quanta Computer is supposed to significantly cut back the production lines for the Playbook.
According to the report Quanta Computer set up a special production faciility in Taiwan with 2,000 workers to make sure the Chinese to not clone the Playbook. Quanta is said to cut back the work force by 50% and shipment of Playbooks already dropped to 100,000 units in the third quarter.
Last week we carri...

BlackBerry PlayBook price slashing begins: $249 and up for Rogers workers

BlackBerry PlayBook price slashing begins: $249 and up for Rogers workers

Posted on Sep 19, 2011 by MG1

Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie revealed on the company’s second-quarter earnings call that RIM would soon be dropping prices on its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets. While the new price points have not yet been disclosed, it looks like the first move in carriers’ efforts to clear their shelves actually started this past Tuesday. Long-time RIM comrade Rogers has launched an internal sale on each of RIM’s three PlayBook models, and company employees are now able to purchase the slate at discounts of up to 50% off. Normally $499.99, the 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is now just $249, the 32GB model drops to $349 from $599.99, and the high-end 64GB PlayBook drops to $399 from its normal $6...

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

As Research In Motion prepares to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday after the market closes, the future of the company and its next-generation products again takes center stage. While estimates for RIM’s second and third quarters are expected by some analysts to beat Wall Street’s consensus, performance of the vendor’s just-released BlackBerry 7 smartphones obviously doesn’t weigh as heavily on the minds of analysts as RIM’s future products and strategy. QNX and its ability to compete with the likes of Apple and Google will be analysts’ focus for the next several quarters, and unfortunately for RIM, the only QNX device it has launched to date is the BlackBerry PlayBook. Best Buy cuts up to $150 off BlackBerry PlayBook

Best Buy cuts up to $150 off BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted on Sep 02, 2011 by MG1

Best Buy has kicked off a promotion for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that slashes the price by as much as $150. The deal isn’t quite as dramatic as the HP TouchPad fire sale of course, but it’s still decent for those that have been considering the PlayBook, especially the 64GB model.
The sale offers a $50 discount on the 16GB and 32GB PlayBook models bringing the prices down to $449.99 and $549.99, respectively. The $150 discount goes towards the 64GB model, which oddly brings the price down in line with the 32GB model at $549.99. That’s a sign that they’re way overstocked on the 64GB model, because seriously who would pay the same amount for the smaller storage capacity?

QNX BlackBerrys getting Android apps

QNX BlackBerrys getting Android apps

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

This may not be much of a surprise but Bloomberg is reporting that the BlackBerry smartphones running the QNX software will definitely be able to utilize Android apps. That means the upcoming BlackBerry Colt may launch with a healthy amount of apps.
We already knew that the BlackBerry PlayBook with QNX would be able to run Android apps through an emulator and Simon even got it working on his tablet. The experience wasn’t amazing but this was an early build, so we have to cut RIM a bit of slack.

‘Fantastic’ BlackBerry PlayBook sales reported by major Australian retailer

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

While HP continues its TouchPad fire sale as it exits the consumer tablet market, major Australian retail chain Harvey Norman has gone on record in reporting “fantastic” sales of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Ben McIntosh, head of Harvey Norman’s computer-buying team, told Australian technology news site Current that the retailer’s sales of RIM’s tablet have exceed expectations. “Sales of the PlayBook are very, very good,” McIntosh told the publication.

Sprint cancels plans to launch 4G BlackBerry PlayBook citing lack of demand

Sprint cancels plans to launch 4G BlackBerry PlayBook citing lack of demand

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

Sprint has abandoned its plans to launch a version of Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with an embedded 4G WiMAX radio. The nation’s No. 3 wireless carrier cited a lack of demand among business customers as its reasoning for the cancellation, The Wall Street Journal reports. “It’s an interesting concept, it just hasn’t caught on with business customers as much as they would like,” said president of Sprint’s business markets group, Paget Alves.

Research warns of PlayBook security holes

Posted on Aug 12, 2011 by MG3

The first independent study into the security credentials of the BlackBerry PlayBook has found a couple of causes for concern.
The issues the NGS Secure team found included unintended access to the file system, flaws in relation to a third-party web server and a problem with the HDMI video interface.
The company has made RIM aware of these security flaws and says that the company is making changes to address them.

BlackBerry PlayBook Android Apps Delayed Until 'Late Fall'

BlackBerry PlayBook Android Apps Delayed Until 'Late Fall'

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

If you were hoping that your BlackBerry PlayBook would be running Android apps by now, I apologize for being the bearer of bad news. According to a new rumor, the “late summer” plan by RIM to get Android apps onto its tablet has been delayed until late fall. Some users purchased the PlayBook in high hopes of this feature – we even bothered the good RIM PR folks at pre-launch parties about the whole Android business. This isn’t looking good.
RIM is undoubtedly slipping in the tablet space, and arguably even in the smartphone arena where it once dominated, and this delay isn’t helping. There aren’t any solid dates, as it’s all based on a rumor that Engadget picked up on, but the fact is summer...

US government gives BlackBerry PlayBook the thumbs up

US government gives BlackBerry PlayBook the thumbs up

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry PlayBook has become the first tablet to receive the necessary certification for it to be used by federal government agencies in the US.
RIM's first tablet effort received the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification which is required for any gadget hoping to be used by the White House and any other governmental department.
No doubt RIM's excellent security procedures were key in getting the tablet the federal okay – it's the enterprise-level cautiousness that has so far kept the PlayBook from getting its own native email app, relying on BlackBerry smartphones' secure exchange to populate email, contacts and calendars on the tablet.
Safety first
