Apple on Wednesday unveiled an updated Apple TV with a new streamlined user interface during the company’s press conference in San Francisco. The iOS-based set top box supports 1080p content, Genius recommendations, iTunes Match, Photo Stream and TV shows will be available the day after they air. “People are going to love streaming movies and TV shows in 1080p with the new Apple TV, and photos look beautiful displayed at the maximum resolution of your TV,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Apple TV is easier than ever to use with its new icon-based interface and the ability to access your purchased movies, TV shows and music right from iCloud.” The ...

Apple TV stock shortages appear, sources say new model imminent
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
It looks like there may be a little more fact behind some of the Apple TV fiction we've been hearing over the past few days. According to sources (as well as Apple Store stock counters), the current Apple TV is becoming increasingly sparse at stores around the country, with most locations reporting no availability at all right now. More tellingly, at all of the stores where the device is out of stock, availability is listed as starting on or after March 7th — the day of Apple's big iPad event — which seems to suggest that something new is indeed coming. The device can be ordered online, and there are a few locations which show the current model in-stock, but that seems to be the exception, n...

Tim Cook says Apple TV is still 'a hobby,' can't live without it
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTVTV 2gen
Looking forward to an update to your beloved Apple TV? It seems the company still fancies the device as well. On the quarterly numbers call today, Tim Cook quipped that "we still classify this as a hobby, but we continue to add things to it." He went on to say that the company will "continue to pull strings and see where we can take it." This comes on the heels of Cupertino seeing a record 1.4 million units sold last quarter.

iOS apps shown running on Apple TV at 720p in new video demo
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
We've seen a jailbroken Apple TV running iOS apps but admittedly, the last demo we were treated to was brief, dimly lit and light on commentary. Now, the developers behind the Apple TV MobileX project are back with a longer, more explanatory video, and this time you can see apps like Facebook, YouTube, Safari and Maps running at 720p resolution. As you can see, the hack generally runs smoothly, though the dev narrating the video is quick to admit that certain apps such as Safari are sluggish due to the fact that he's using VNC instead of a direct input method like a remote or mouse and keyboard. Curious? We've got video of the setup just past the break.

Apple TV receives 4.4.4 firmware update with bug fixes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Apple has released an incremental software update for the second generation Apple TV that brings it to version 4.4.4, but before you get too excited, it's a pretty minor one. Aside from the usual performance and stability improvements, it fixes "an issue that displayed an error when playing some video content." Decidedly boring stuff, but it's still nice to see the media streamer receive support even as its rumored dual-core A5 chip-powered successor approaches. The update has already begun rolling out, so you should see it on your Apple TV shortly.

Next Apple TV Codename appears: J33
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
A new codename was spotted in the iOS firmware assigned to the next generation Apple TV. The Apple TV box has the codename J33, which indicates that it is closer to getting ready. 9to5Mac has published the firmware entries found for J33 from a tipster. Until now we only saw references of Apple TV 3,1. A codename like J33 suggests that Apple is getting closer to release the new Apple TV. I do not expect that though this year.
On the other hand a Sprint release for a device like the Apple TV is also not ideal. What will be new for the new Apple TV? Nobody knows, but it is time to get apps on the Apple TV to go against Smart TVs

CBS: We turned down an Apple TV deal because of ad split
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
CBS just announced its quarterly earnings a few hours ago, and CEO Les Moonves dropped a very interesting tidbit in on the call. When asked about possible streaming deals for the network, Moonves mentioned rather casually that the company had turned down a deal with Apple for a streaming TV agreement because it was based on an ad revenue split model.
This is all very interesting to us, of course, as Apple has long been rumored to be considering just such a subscription-based streaming TV service, but, as yet, none has materialized. The wounds were recently opened again with the publication of Walter Isaacson's biography, Steve Jobs, which quotes Jobs as having very recently talked about just...

Apple TV Update Adds AirPlay Mirroring, NHL, WSJ
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Along with the barrage of updates and novelties unleashed today from Cupertino, Apple has pushed out the Apple TV 4.4 software update, which features some new ways to stream content to your TV.
The most notable addition is AirPlay mirroring, which allows you to stream whatever is on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 directly to you HDTV. Just as hockey season is about to get underway, Apple has added the NHL to the list of sports leagues you can subscribe to for live streaming games. For your more serious side, the update adds access to free, live Wall Street Journal video content. That's all pretty cool! Oh and you can look at images recently synced to Photo Stream—too bad we already decided Photo S...

Apple TV to get subscription service?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTVTV 2gen
Apple is looking into adding some sort of subscription to Apple TV, in a bid to bring more premium content to the service.
This is according to the Wall Street Journal, which has been speaking to undisclosed sources at Apple about what will be the next big move for the electronics giant now that Steve Jobs is no longer at the helm.
Buried in a piece about the future of Apple, the WSJ explained that some sort of subscription is on the cards for Apple TV, noting: "Apple is working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service."

Apple prepping new video delivery method for TVs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Brief remarks in an overview of Tim Cook's new position as Apple CEO have hinted that Apple is developing a new approach to TV. The company was cryptically described as making a "new technology to deliver video to televisions." What that entailed wasn't elaborated by the WSJ source.
The mention could be an allusion to a greater emphasis on streaming over downloading. Apple TV owners can watch shows without having to permanently download a copy, but they still have to cache on the hub while they play, downloading as if they were permanent copies. It could alternately include something beyond the Apple TV.

iTunes Replay mired in studio negotiations say sources
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Reports that Apple will imminently offer re-downloads and streaming access to purchased movie and TV show content as part of an iTunes Replay system are premature, new sources have suggested, amid claims that in fact the Cupertino company is yet to secure most of the necessary licensing agreements. So far, deals with at least four of the six top film studios are yet to be inked, CNET‘s sources tell them, leaving an iTunes Replay launch several months off, in all probability.
The reason behind the delay, it’s suggested, is the so-called HBO window, industry shorthand for the electronic distribution period in which HBO has exclusive rights to digital content from 20th Century Focx, Warner Bros...

Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML 5 Games
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
The Apple TV was just recently updated with support for Vimeo and TV show streaming, suggesting that Apple still has many plans for this supposed “hobby” of a product. With the upcoming iOS 5 and the iCloud, it’s likely that Apple TV may tap into these for more functionality later this fall. But for those less patient, you can hack your Apple TV for now to access HTML 5 apps and games.
A hacker installed the Couch Surfer browser on a jailbroken Apple TV and was able to demonstrate an HTML5-based game, Casino BlackJack. Now, the game is fairly bare bones and although it may not be the most impressive of feats, it does remind us of Apple TV’s potential beyond movies and TV shows.

Apple TV gets software update, preliminary iCloud support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Apple issued an update to its Apple TV product on Monday that will allow users to stream purchased high-definition TV shows directly from iTunes. Specifically, Apple says the update will enable:
iTunes TV Shows: Purchase your favorite TV shows directly from the iTunes Store, and watch the shows you already own, commercial-free in HD.
Vimeo: Browse and play videos from Vimeo, access your video inbox, and mark videos you want to watch later.
When Apple first launched the Apple TV, it only allowed users to rent movies and shows and there was not an option to purchase titles for permanent ownership. For users in the U.S., Apple has also rolled out preliminary iCloud support with this update, all...

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Did you know that your second-gen Apple TV has a Bluetooth radio hidden inside it? Well it does but, until now, the only way to access it was with a little jailbreaking and some command line chops. That could all be changing though, with the release of iOS 5 this fall. 9to5Mac pulled some interesting code from the latest developer beta of iOS indicating that support for Bluetooth keyboards is coming to the Apple TV and, potentially, the ability pair other devices as well. In addition to making search without the iPhone remote app far less painful, a keyboard is an essential part of bringing apps to the tiny media box -- something that has been rumored would happen for quite sometime. It's po...
