Telstra won't be Gingerbreading the HTC Desire after all
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
If you're on Australia's Telstra network and you're still clinging to hope of an OTA Gingerbread update for your beloved HTC Desire, then now it's officially time to let go. For a while it looked like Telstra might opt for a smart workaround to the old handset's lack of memory, but now the operator's update page makes it clear that it has fallen in line with the wider HTC stance: Android 2.3 just isn't viable on this device, unless you're prepared to go off-piste with the developer build or an unofficial ROM.

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
If you are among the bunch of people still holding on to their trusty HTC Desire, you might not like the news that we have to share with you. It looks like the smartphone will not be treated to Gingerbread after all, or at least not in the form of a full-fledged update that HTC was expected to release by the end of July.
Technically, an official Gingerbread ROM for the HTC Desire will be available for download, yet it will not be pushed out to the general public due to a number of issues that the HTC developer team simply couldn't hurdle. HTC stated on its Facebook page that “certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS”, but ...

HTC Desire Gingerbread update available, excludes US and comes with long list of caveats
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
First off, if you own the North American variant of this handset then you're out of luck. Likewise, Japanese, South Korean and some German handsets are also excluded. Still here? Okay then, but you might not like what comes next. We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Still, at least HTC gave (some of) us the choice. Visit the source...

HTC Desire Gingerbread action coming in July
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
The will it, won't it saga seems close to an end now with HTC stating that the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire "will begin rolling out...by the end of July".
The statement was made on the UK HTC Facebook page - the same place the company stated back in June that the device wouldn't be getting the update as "there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire".
HTC, just a day later, backtracked though saying: "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire" and admitting that "to resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread" it would be ditching some apps.

HTC claims Desire will get Gingerbread by the end of July
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
Android OS upgrades are the most fickle of all things, even when you are told over and over that it will be coming soon, soon never seems to arrive. At this point T-Mobile G2X users may never see their update even though they have another reason to believe, because they've been hearing that it is "coming soon" or coming "in less than a month" since the phone was released back in April. HTC, however, has been better about upgrades than many manufacturers, and they are claiming now that HTC Desire users will be getting Gingerbread by the end of the month.
At first, Desire users were told not to even expect Gingerbread, then a day later, they recanted and said Gingerbread would be coming to th...

HTC Desire Android 2.3 update enters testing phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
HTC has announced that its long-awaited Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire has entered internal testing.
The update will provide the HTC Desire with a slightly stripped-down version of the software, with some apps having to be abandoned to free up memory required by the Gingerbread update.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for Desire owners; HTC had originally promised the update, then decided it couldn't deliver it and then changed its mind again a day later, saying that it would be bringing the update out after all.
Gingerbone of contention
The latest update from the company reads: "Hi all - We're excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start d...
