Pentax refreshes its rugged camera lineup with the Optio WG-2 series

Pentax refreshes its rugged camera lineup with the Optio WG-2 series

Exactly twelve months after the unveiling of the Optio WG-1 family, Pentax is now introducing the successors to its colorful and ruggedized shooters. And while its macho design hasn't changed much, the newcomers usher in a host of predictable spec bumps. The new all-terrain shooters are sporting a 16-megapixel, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 1080p (30fps) movie mode, micro-HDMI for when you feel like sharing your adventures and a 3-inch, 460,000 -dot LCD to help you frame your shots. Of course, this wouldn't fall under the rugged category if it couldn't handle anything you threw at it, which is why any WG-2 is waterproof up to 40 feet, shock-resistant and dustproof. If you're thinking about t...

Pentax announces K-01 K-mount APS-C mirrorless camera

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: CamerasPentaxK-01

Pentax has formally announced the K-01 K-mount mirrorless interchangable lens camera and a revised 40mm F2.8 pancake lens to match. Built around a 16MP APS-C sensor, the camera can mount most of the lenses the company has ever made. It features sensor-shift image stabilization, a 920k dot rear LCD and can shoot at up to 6 frames per second. The rather interesting design is the work of respected product designer Marc Newson and features a logo of his signature on the base of the camera. The K-01 (which the company says should be pronounced 'kay-zero-one'), will cost around $749 body-only and $899 with the 'XS' version of the 40mm lens. Our biggest concern, based on its dependance on contrast ...

Pentax has announced a new 20x optical zoom compact camera, which also includes features designed for photographing in a vertical orientation.
The Optio VS20 also features a 16 million pixel sensor and a 3-inch colour LCD display. An extra shutter release button and zoom lever are included to help when shooting photographs vertically.
Other features include a new Handheld Night Snap mode, which is designed to help capture images in low-light conditions with minimal blur and noise.

Pentax crams 18x optical zoom into Optio RZ18 point-and-shoot camera

Posted on Sep 13, 2011 by MG1

Guess what, amateur shooters? The superzoom just got shrunk. Pentax has just outed a new compact that touts a downright impressive 18x optical zoomer (25-450mm equivalent), with the snooping lens married to a 16 megapixel sensor, a smattering of shake reduction technologies and a 3-inch HVGA LCD 'round back. Moreover, you'll find a nine-point autofocus system, face detection algorithms, an SDXC card slot and an HD video mode capable of snagging 720p clips at 30 frames per second. It's all set to ship next month in black, white and orange for $299.95 here in the States, with the full presser embedded just after the break.

The Pentax Q: Big Features in a Little Package

The Pentax Q: Big Features in a Little Package

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: CamerasPentaxQ

There's a lot to like about the new Pentax Q digital camera. It has a slick retro look, five interchangeable lenses and many features of a dSLR packed into a body that's the size of a point and shoot.
The Q slims itself down by ditching the optical finder, mirror box, focusing plate and AF sensor that add bulk to a typical dSLR. What's left inside is an imaging engine with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS image sensor capable of shooting 12.4MP images and recording 1080/30 FPS HD video.
