HP CEO Leo Apotheker has already indicated that he's totally open to licensing webOS to other companies, and he's now confirmed that HP has, in fact, been in talks with a "number of companies" about that possibility. Not surprisingly, he didn't get much more specific than that, and went some way to dampen expectations a bit, saying that "there is no time pressure to do this." According to Bloomberg, however, "three people with knowledge of the discussions" say that Samsung is one of the companies HP has had talks with, and one said that the company is specifically interested in possibly using webOS for its Galaxy Tab tablets. Wow, this took a while. Unlocked Palm Pre 2 devices got their webOS 2.1 update in early March. And it's taken a ridiculously long time for it to come to Verizon's CDMA Pre 2. But alas, maybe we should just be grateful that it came at all, considering the Palm/HP transition?
We're done ranting; it's time to rave. The webOS 2.1 update, which is being pushed out in a piecemeal fashion, brings a lot of fantastic features. One fun addition is Exhibition, which allows you to set specific display functions when your device is being charged. You can choose from a clock display, a slideshow of your photos, or your daily agenda.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the webOS prospects recently. You may’ve read my rant on why Nokia should’ve picked Palm/HP’s rather than Microsoft’s mobile platform and now I want to make a case why HP should pitch Amazon to make a webOS-based tablet and how the two companies can help drive webOS forward. I have two reasons why a strategic deal between HP and Amazon could be beneficial for both companies.
