Apple beats HTC in patent infringement case; HTC becomes top U.S. smartphone seller

When HTC acquired S3 Graphics for $300 million this summer, the idea was that by purchasing the target's patent portfolio, HTC could defend itself against attacks from Apple's litigious lawyers. At the same time, the hope for the Taiwan based manufacturer was that the patents would allow them to go after Apple and its vaunted smartphone. On Tuesday the International Trade Commission ruled that Apple had not violated any of the patents acquired by HTC in the S3 Graphics deal and HTC said that it might appeal directly to a U.S. patent court. HTC General Counsel Grace Lei said the company was disappointed, but is still reviewing all of its options.
So was the S3 Graphics deal a waste of $300 mi...

Facebook, HTC working on phone code-named Buffy

Here we go again. Reports from AllThingsD suggest that the world’s largest social network is working with HTC to build, develop and release a Facebook phone and the project, code-named “Buffy,” is being spearheaded by Facebook CTO Bret Taylor.
The details are actually pretty sparse but AllThingsD is promising that it will have a full series about this Facebook phone this week, so it’s probably just doling out what it knows to keep us clicking. The HTC Facebook phone is supposed to run a modified version of Android and it will use the HTML5 capabilities of the latest redesign to let users buy and use apps. As you may know, the HTML5 version on the iPhone doesn’t let browsers use Facebook Cred...

Red DROID Incredible 2 coming on November 24th

Red DROID Incredible 2 coming on November 24th

Posted on Nov 21, 2011 by MG15

Verizon Wireless will soon introduce a red version of the DROID Incredible 2 smartphone. As far as we understood, the new device will hit the stores on November 24th, just when people will start getting crazy, buying all the things they need and don’t need. I admit that red Incredible 2 looks like a perfect gift for smartphone newbies (and folks who don’t care about the high-end features), whereas those with some experience will go for some other Android device from Verizon’s portfolio – like let’s say the DROID Galaxy Nexus or DROID RAZR.

An image and details surrounding a purported new HTC smartphone code-named “Zeta” have been uncovered. Following BGR’s exclusive reports revealing two upcoming HTC phones set to be unveiled early next year at Mobile World Congress — the HTC Edge and HTC Ville — Engadget on Tuesday published a render of the HTC Zeta. Featuring a unique design and a near-edgeless 4.5-inch 720p display, the Zeta is rumored to sport a unibody aluminum case, quad-core 2.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, Beats Audio, Bluetooth 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 1,830 mAh battery. The phone will run Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich according to the report, lik...

HTC, porn company tussling over Vivid name

HTC, porn company tussling over Vivid name

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

If you walk into an AT&T store and plan to pick up the 4G LTE-capable HTC Vivid, would you be confused into thinking this is part of a porn company? Well, Vivid Entertainment seems to think so, as it asking HTC to change the name or it will be sued.
HTC told The Verge that it doesn’t have any comments but it seems like an odd idea to me, as it’s clear to me that this device doesn’t come from the adult entertainment company, even if you can use Android for porn. Still, Vivid is very deep into technology and it too wants to protect its brands out there.
What do you think of this legal threat? Should HTC bend over to Vivid?

HTC Mozart and HD7 go back to grade school, learn how to Internet Share

HTC Mozart and HD7 go back to grade school, learn how to Internet Share

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

The ability to use your Windows Phone as a mobile hotspot was originally an exclusive feature extended only to brand new Mango devices, but we're now beginning to see Internet Sharing pop up on the HTC HD7 and Mozart. We're seeing reports that it's showing up in various parts of the world, though we still haven't heard if this will include T-Mobile HD7 users in the US or if it still awaits final carrier approval first. Either way, it's probably worth clicking on that Zune icon to check for the update.

HTC to unveil quad-core tablet in February

HTC to unveil quad-core tablet in February

Posted on Nov 15, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHTC

HTC has not found tremendous success thus far with its first two tablet offerings. Despite a carrier deal with Sprint, the Sense UI, a unique note-taking feature called Scribe and a bunch of scantily-clad women toting the tablet at a few events, our sources suggest HTC Flyer sales have not been stellar. The company’s second tablet offering, the Jetstream, was priced out of contention here in the U.S., running $700 with a two-year data contract from AT&T. According to a recent report, HTC’s lucky number three will be unveiled in February at the annual Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Spain. Details are limited for the time being, but DigiTimes cites a report from Chinese-language Comm...

Verizon restarts HTC DROID Incredible Gingerbread deployment

Posted on Nov 15, 2011 by MG1

HTC and Verizon Wireless have apparently restarted the deployment of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original DROID Incredible. Initially released back in September, the companies pulled the update shortly after it went out for undisclosed reasons. Here we are over two months later and users are reporting left and right that the upgrade is once again available to them. Users should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed, or they can manually check through the Settings app on the phone itself.

HTC Ville detailed: HTC Sense 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, thinner than iPhone

HTC Ville detailed: HTC Sense 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, thinner than iPhone

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

We just got the scoop on another brand new HTC handset, which will be part of the company’s Mobile World Congress announcements alongside the HTC Edge we detailed yesterday. The HTC Ville (codename) is set to launch in April with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and, for the first time, HTC Sense 4.0. The smartphone will feature a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor. In addition to those specifications, the HTC Ville will house an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated camera, just like the one on the HTC Edge, with 1080p HD video capture support. We’re told the handset won’t feature NFC due to the metal construction of the case, and ...

HTC Rezound starts shipping early because you can't stop the Beats

HTC Rezound starts shipping early because you can't stop the Beats

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

When HTC took the wraps off the Rezound, it tipped us off to a November 14th launch for Verizon's Beats Audio-branded device. Now, it appears that those of you who jumped on the pre-order bandwagon are getting premature access to the red-and-black-tinged goods, with some units arriving as early as today. How'd this come about? Well, it seems a few eager beavers lucked out during the purchasing process, selecting overnight delivery and receiving the phones toute de suite. We can't promise you Big Red's still honoring this ordering quirk, but don't let that stop you from trying your luck. We have a feeling Dr. Dre would approve.

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...

HTC Edge may be the first quad-core smartphone to market

HTC Edge may be the first quad-core smartphone to market

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Color us skeptical on this one, but rumors are coming down the pipeline about an HTC phone called the Edge. It's supposedly going to be the first Tegra 3-powered smartphone. According to Pocketnow, the device will supposedly offer a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 4.7-inch 720p HD display, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera with f/2.2 lens and Beats Audio. Curiously, no LTE capability was mentioned specifically, though 21Mbps HSPA+ appears to be good to go, and there's a slight possibility of Sense 4.0 being included -- which given its proposed launch window of late Q1 / early Q2 2012, wouldn't be a huge surprise. We'd love to start seeing more quad-core goodness headed our way, so we're definitely keepin...

HTC to launch unique new tablet next year

HTC to launch unique new tablet next year

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHTC

HTC may launch a new tablet next year that it hopes will be distinct in a growing sea of Android tablets, Reuters recently reported. HTC already has a number of Android-powered tablets on the market including the 7-inch Flyer (EVO View 4G on Sprint) and the AT&T Jetstream 4G. “[The] tablet is a market we would like to try and test, to see whether we can make ourselves stand out and prevent a me-too product,” HTC CEO Peter Chou said in a recent media briefing. The company could make itself stand-out a bit by being the first to market with an Ice Cream Sandwich device, possibly pre-loaded with HTC’s unique Sense UI. Its Flyer Android tablet was loaded with HTC’s Sense user interface but it lau...

HTC EVO Design 4G for Sprint

HTC EVO Design 4G for Sprint

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

The HTC EVO Design 4G continues the popular EVO line for Sprint, but for a fraction of the cost of what you’d normally expect to pay for the high-end Android smartphone line. The EVO Design 4G is attractive and has that unmistakable HTC build quality, and it runs Android 2.3.4 and runs HTC’s Sense 3.0 UI, so the phone is fresh and mostly up to date. It also supports Sprint’s WiMax network, hence the “4G” in its moniker, so you can expect fast web browsing and speedy data-intensive apps.
While the HTC EVO Design 4G is priced nicely at just $99, it doesn’t feel too much like a budget handset. It certainly has a few drawbacks, and it’s a little on the thick side compared to most of today’s smar...
