Google adds multiple APK support to Android Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google has enabled a new feature in the Android Market that should make the lives of developers and users a bit easier. Developers can now list multiple APKs (the file type for Android apps) under the same app name in the Android Market. This will allow for both tablet and smartphone versions of an app to be listed under the same name.
When a user downloads an app that has multiple versions attached to it, the Android Market will provide the appropriate version of the app for the user's device, whether that be a smartphone or a tablet.
This will make it easier for users, as they will not have to separately purchase the tablet version and smartphone version of the same app to use it on multip...

BlackBerry PlayBook Android App player leaks, brings thousands of apps from the Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsRIM BlackBerryGoogleAndroidPlayBook
RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook features a handful of apps, but we've been teased with the promise of Android app support for months. And now we seem closer than ever to the final version as a beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android app player leaked out. The application was found through a changelog in an update to the Desktop Manager and tech blog N4BB has been sent an old beta build which might not have the final interface (there's no back button, so you have to swipe on the bezel at the bottom to go back), but it works.
Ironically, the app player is based on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, a version that's only available on a few phones yet. That should translate into support for the more than 200,...

Exploit Allowed Anybody To Remove Any Website From Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
China's been catching a lot of grief lately for ruthlessly culling scores of websites from the Internet, but as it turns out, Google may have been unintentionally doing it's part, too. Yesterday, James Breckenridge, the director of operations at UK Web Media, reported an exploit in Google's Webmaster Tools that allowed anybody to remove any website from Google's search results. And, as everybody knows, if you're not on Google, you might as well not even be on the Internet.
Search Engine Land reported on the flaw yesterday. The exploit was a simple one, too; all you had to do was log into Google Webmaster Tools and point your browser at the following address:

Google+ Reportedly Closing In on 20 Million Users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Forget about jumping on board the Google+ bandwagon, Google's social networking service is more like a freight train picking up cargo and steam each passing day. According to Paul Allen, a Google+ user and co-founder of Ancestry.com (and not the Paul Allen who co-founded Microsoft), Google+ is already right at the 18 million user mark just three weeks after launch.
Allen uses some fuzzy math to come up with his numbers, ones that are based on his "new-and-improved 1,000 surname model." What he does is take a random sample of surnames each day and looks for ones with no Google+ users by those names. Sounds sketchy, but Allen insists it's at least moderately accurate.

Android tablets now 30% of the market, Windows tablets outsold PlayBook in Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftRIM BlackBerryGoogleWindows 7AndroidPlayBook
Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. Apple, which owned more than 94% of the market in the second quarter last year, saw the iPad’s share slide to 61.3% according to Strategy Analytics. Over the same perio...

Dell considering using Google+ Hangouts for customer support
Like UnlikeFiled in: DellGoogle
Michael Dell is toying with the idea of using Google+ Hangouts for Dell’s customer support. The service allows users to initiate a video chat session with multiple people inside their Google+ circles. “I am thinking about hangouts for business. Would you like to be able to connect with your Dell service and sale teams via video directly from Dell.com?” he posted on his Google+ page on Sunday. The idea was an instant success: 556 people had given the comment a +1 as of Tuesday morning and hundreds more left comments in support of the suggestion. As GigaOm points out, it is currently not possible to start a “Hangout” session from anywhere but from inside Google+ itself. The social network is s...

Google:Two Million PCs Infected by Search Hijacking Malware
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
There has been an alarming increase in scareware over the last couple of years. Google, which in 2010 ascertained 15% of all malware to be of the scareware variety, has begun notifying search users about a new strain of malware, which is thought to have been delivered to around a couple million PCs hidden inside fake antivirus software. According to the company, the said malware “causes infected computers to send traffic to Google through a small number of intermediary servers called ‘proxies’”. Hit the jump for more.
The web giant started warning search users affected by this as-yet-unnamed malware on Tuesday, and has already used this notification mechanism to “successfully warn hundreds o...

Intel gives discounts to get sped-up, Core-based Chromebooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksOperating SystemsIntelGoogleChromium OS
Google Chromebooks will soon get a big speed upgrade in return for a slight discount, insiders claimed Wednesday. The Chrome OS hardware will reportedly go to Core i3 and beyond processors and, to make the price balance work, will get a 10 to 20 percent discount from Intel on the chips. Existing partners Acer and Samsung were reported by Digitimes as onboard and might be joined by ASUS and others as soon as early 2012.
The upgrade would come as a tacit admission that Chromebooks weren't necessarily working in their current price field. Although they cost $50 to $100 more than a netbook, they don't really have better performance, insiders said. The two systems out so far also supposedly have ...

Google: We should have done a Facebook competitor sooner
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt has admitted that the search giant should have put more effort into a Facebook-alike social network earlier.
In an interview with CNN, former CEO Schmidt expressed his frustration that his company had not worked on a more personal approach to the internet earlier.
"Fundamentally, what Facebook has done is built a way to figure out who people are. That system is missing in the internet as a whole. Google should have worked on this earlier," said Schmidt.
Resources
"I think that's the area where I would have put more resources, developing these identity services and ranking systems that go along with that. That would have made a big difference for the i...

Chromium OS running on a MacBook Air: somewhere, a mad scientist cackles in the night
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksOperating SystemsAppleGoogleMacBook Air 13-inch Mid 2009Chromium OS
Does it hurt your brain to look at the picture above? That'd be Chromium OS -- running on a MacBook Air! Pretty much the definition of "worlds colliding," this feat is brought to you by Hexxeh, whose most recent mind-warping project put Chrome on an iPad. The platform-mixing maestro says in this case everything works except Bluetooth, owing to a lack of support. But hearty souls who seek to follow in his footsteps, take heed: there's no dual-boot option, and you will lose OS X -- so perhaps this is a job for your now outdated model. Click the source link for 14 easy steps to turning your svelte laptop into Frankenstein's monster, but sadly, there's no mention of where to buy that hopelessly ...

Google to offer Pottermore ebooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Pottermore and Google have joined forces to sell the Harry Potter ebooks via the Google eBooks platform.
Still a US-only service, Google eBooks will allow Potter fans to buy the ebooks from Google and store them in their Google Books libraries.
Through the magic of cloud computing, they can then access the books on other ereader platforms.
Buying tomes through Google eBooks is a US only privilege at the moment, but should be coming to the UK at some point and bringing the Harry Potter franchise with it - unfortunately there's no scheduled release date just yet.
Google casts its spell
It's been a long time coming, but fans of the boy wizard will finally be able to access his story in ebook fo...

Updated Netflix applications brings unofficial support to Honeycomb
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 3.0
Netflix recently updated it Android application to support a whopping 24 devices now. Oh, that’s not that much. Still, the application that debuted with support of only five handsets is expanding its reach and you can stream video on some devices that aren’t even officially supported, including Honeycomb tablets.
The updated Netflix app works on the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but we had no luck with the Toshiba Thrive. While it’s not a Honeycomb tablet, Netflix works just as well on the EVO View 4G, too. We can likely thank the new Lenovo IdeaPad K1 for this new-found unofficial support, as the devices are the first Honeycomb tablets that are Netflix certified out of the gate....

There's also 11 cities in South Africa available to view in 3D.
Next generation
The "next generation" 3D mapping service originally launched in December last year, adding digital realism to the cities of New York, Milan and Zurich.
