ARM CEO thinks Windows is more "familiar" than Android

Posted on Feb 02, 2012 by MG1

As we learned yesterday from ARM's quarterly earnings call, the company is dominating the mobile space and has been seeing huge profits. What we didn't hear were some comments that ARM CEO Warren East made regarding consumer feelings towards Windows as compared to Android.
Apparently, the ARM CEO believes that consumers are more familiar with Microsoft and Windows than they are with Android, and it's hard to argue that point. East believes that this "awareness advantage" will help Microsoft as it pushes into the tablet market. That said, East doesn't think that we should count out Android tablets just yet, making a parallel to the slow burn of Android phones that has now ramped up into some...

Filed in: Google

Google is implementing a new system that automatically redirects users to country-specific URLs that match their IP address' location when they're trying to access a Google Blogger site. It's being rolled out slowly and Google says it will the company to "continue promoting free expression and responsible publishing while providing greater flexibility in complying with valid removal requests pursuant to local law," much like Twitter's new censoring tools. For example, this will allow the search giant to shut down a pro-Nazi blog at [example].blogspot.com.de for German users while letting those in countries that allow such content to continue viewing it at the [example].blogspot.com URL. Goog...

There is no shortage of ways for YouTube to monetize its site right now. It has sponsored videos, ad-supported content, and pay-per-click overlay ads. Google said Monday that it has significantly improved its Maps capability for the United Kingdom, adding 170,000 train journeys and over 2,500 stations across Great Britain.
Maps also has signed a partnership with TheTrainline, so that users could actually book tickets for train journeys.
Google Maps was originally designed with streets and roads in mind, meaning that the infrastructure was already in place to calculate driving directions. But the United Kingdom is heavily dependent upon public transportation, with train journeys often far more direct than driving from city to city by car. To date, using Maps to calculate a route only took advantage of public transportation in Greater London...

Despite Google's best efforts to introduce a simpler universal privacy policy across its numerous products, it seems that its customers aren't finding the new document entirely transparent, with some left confused and concerned by the changes being made. In a post on the Google Public Policy Blog, Google's director of Public Policy Pablo Chavez explains that although the privacy policy might be changing, users' privacy controls — and the permissions they give their content — will remain unchanged.
Chavez is quick to assuage a number of potential fears in the post. He assures users that their private information will remain private, that many tasks will still be available without a Google acc...

I don't know what it is about new data centers, but they all seem to resemble the evil lairs of Bond-movie villains. Google's latest, based in a disused paper mill in Finland, is no exception.
Joining the ranks of the Norwegian fjord-cooled data center in a cave and Facebook's $700 million Arctic server farm, Google's new corporate data center is based Hamina, Finland.

Big companies in Silicon Valley have allegedly put in place an agreement that they would not poach each other’s workers.
