Intel suffered a setback in the server market last week with the news that its former partner, SeaMicro, is being acquired by AMD. But the world's top chip maker said it was internally developing technology to remain competitive in the dense server market.
Intel is developing integrated fabrics to boost I/O and high-performance networking and storage in servers, said Jason Waxman, general manager of Intel's data center business unit, in an interview. The technologies are being developed as the company tries to boost its presence in the market for dense servers used in cloud computing deployments in data centers.

AMD buys SeaMicro, enters server hardware business

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Advanced Micro Devices announced Wednesday it is buying low-power server vendor SeaMicro, a surprise move that puts AMD in the systems business and disrupts Intel by acquiring one of its close partners.
AMD will pay $334 million in cash and stock for SeaMicro, a 40-employee Silicon Valley startup that has gained attention for building highly dense and power-efficient servers for use in large-scale cloud computing environments. SeaMicro CEO Andrew Feldman will become general manager of a new division at AMD, the Data Center Server Solutions group.

Single Slot Radeon HD 7850

Single Slot Radeon HD 7850

Posted on Mar 12, 2012 by MG3

AFOX out of Hong Kong showed off a custom made Radeon HD 7850 card at CeBIT as vrzone reported. The card is the first single slot Radeon HD 7850 card we've seen so far and despite this, AFOX has managed to squeeze in four display connectors.
The AF7850-1024D5S1 as the card is awkwardly called also differs in terms of its overall specification compared to AMD's reference cards. For one, the GPU is clocked at 900MHz rather than 860MHz, a fairly modest overclock, but still a peculiar move considering the single slot the design. As the model name gives away, AFOX halved the graphics memory to 1GB and underclocked it by 75MHz (300MHz effectively) for an effective clock speed of 4.5GHz compared to...

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Sony has begun working on its next-generation gaming console under the Playstation brand, and Forbes learned that it's none other than AMD designing its graphics processing unit (GPU). AMD is far from new to the game console GPU business, as its GPUs already drive graphics processing in Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles. If launched anytime soon, the next-gen Playstation will create a rare moment where GPUs of all three major game console makers would be AMD-made. The current Playstation 3 console uses an NVIDIA GPU.

AMD A8-3870K Cracks 6 GHz with All Cores Enabled

Posted on Feb 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: CPUAMDA8-3870K

Overclocker "Christian Ney" of the HWBOT community claims to have cracked the 6 GHz clock speed mark with an AMD A8-3870K APU, with all four of its cores enabled. The feat consisted of a clock speed of 6067.7 MHz achieved using a base clock of 258.2 MHz and multiplier of 47.0x. The memory was clocked at 3505 MHz, just 95 MHz short of a world-record. The chip was put through a scorching core voltage of 2V. Supporting components included GIGABYTE A75-UD4H motherboard, and GeIL EVO Corsa DDR3 memory. The setup was cooled sub-zero. CPU-Z Validator rejected this submission, probably because like us, it finds 2V vCore and 258.2 MHz base clock unreal for Llano, since it uses a common 100 MHz clock ...

But that's the thing about graphics cards; like tea, they come in a variety of flavors. Today, AMD launched its second 28nm next-gen GPU, the Radeon HD 7950, another high-end offering -- but this one costs $100 less than its 7970 sibling.
