Samsung launching 3D YouTube app for its smart TVs

Samsung launching 3D YouTube app for its smart TVs

Samsung launched "YouTube on TV" today, an app that brings 3D videos from the world's most popular video-sharing site to Samsung smart TVs. The service was announced at IFA in September, and Samsung promised it would be available by the end of 2011, so the release is just in time. 3D video content is still fairly difficult to come by, and the app is an attempt to fill that void with more than 8,000 "high-quality" 3D YouTube videos. Although Samsung's app should work anywhere in the world, YouTube currently only offers 3D video in North America, UK and Japan — the service should roll out to other countries in the future. We can't find the "YouTube on TV" app on Samsung's app store yet, but it...

Consumers Show Interest in Smart TVs

Consumers Show Interest in Smart TVs

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Smart TVs have been a recent addition to the consumer market. They provide internet access to users without the need for an external computer or having only limited access to websites. Today, a study conducted by the Consumer Decision Process stated that 10% of the broadband households that they reviewed stated that they plan to purchase a new Smart TV before the end of 2011. This number has grown from the 6% of households who stated they would in the first half of the year. The households interviewed represent about 50% of the nearly one-fourth of U.S broadband households planning to purchase a flat-panel TV. “Advertising campaigns from manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, and VIZIO have bo...

Rumor: Samsung Will Cut TV Production by 80 Percent

Rumor: Samsung Will Cut TV Production by 80 Percent

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

We’ve been consistently impressed with Samsung’s high-end TVs. This year’s 8000 models are especially slick, with crazy thin bezels and outstanding pictures. That’s nice and all, but it doesn’t matter unless all of that turns into sales. Samsung has been losing sales over the last year or so, resulting in an atrocious second quarter. The whole flat-panel market is a bit rough right now and Samsung has announced cuts in TV production, just like LG before them.

Samsung to get YouTube 3D exclusively at first

At a press conference before the IFA show in Berlin, Samsung revealed it will be the first to host YouTube 3D videos on its Smart TVs and Smart Hubs. The dedicated app that makes this possible will be exclusive to Samsung for a limited but unspecified time. The company's European marketing director, Michael Zoller, said the app will be one of 100 new ones introduced before year's end, and likely by the end of September.
At the same time, Samsung added a new 60-inch version of its thin, 0.2-inch bezeled D8000 LED-lit TV line, which was introduced at CES. The 60D8000 gets 3D support and supports the Smart TV web and app platform.

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVsSamsung

The 3D TV market is hardly booming today with the sets not selling as well as TV makers had expected. This is due to a number of reasons including the lack of 3D content and the fact that the tech is more expensive than most consumers are willing to pay today. That will change and 3D TV will become more and more common as the tech matures and gets cheaper and better.
The market may not be as strong as TV makers had hoped, but Samsung has over 60% of what market for the sets there is. Samsung claims that its unit and dollar share for the 3D TV market in the May 22 to June 18 period was 61%. That percentage includes both LED and Plasma 3D TVs. NPD has Samsung at 50% of the unit and dollar mark...

Samsung Smart TV platform installed base passes two million, adds BBC News app

While finding out precisely how many people are actually using its apps (over 100 million downloaded) is still tricky, Samsung has proudly announced there are over two million units out there packing its Smart TV platform. That count includes over 730,000 units in North America alone, and according to the company, outpaces the initial uptake of LED lit TVs. Of course, having a Samsung Apps store is nothing without apps to put in it, and over the UK there's a new BBC News app that is currently available exclusively on the Samsung platform.
