Blackberry PlayBook OS 2.0 leaks and has Exchange ActiveSync but no BES or BB Internet Server accounts
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksRIM BlackBerry
Earlier this week we mentioned that QNX using Blackberry smartphones would get access to Android apps. Another interesting tidbit about a Blackberry product has now surfaced. This time it has to do with the PlayBook tablet and a leaked version of OS 2.0 that turned up online. Version 2 of the PlayBook OS is a QNX-based OS and if the leaked screen shots are legit, some changes are in store.

Acer Aspire 3951 photos leaked, new Ultrabooks to launch in September
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcer
We don't mind eyeballing a few impossibly clean renders when we get wind of a new toy, but there's nothing like the real McCoy. Today's bones slipped out of a (now pulled) HDblog hands-on of the Acer Aspire 3951 Ultrabook, possibly leaked ahead of an IFA 2011 embargo. The genuine article looks nearly identical to its rendered counterpart, albeit a bit thicker and more plasticky. The unveiled 13.3-inch MacBook Air competitor reportedly sports a second generation Intel Core processor, boots from sleep in under two seconds, and is only 13mm thick.

Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSonyVAIO VPC-Z21V9E
Another official teardown, another predictable revelation: the new Sony Vaio Z's viscera are thinner, flatter and, er, more compressed than those of its predecessor. But at least this dissection is performed by an actual Vaio engineer who ought to know his stuff. In the video after the break, Shinji Oguchi explains how cooling was improved using a range of tricks, like aerating the laptop's guts via holes in the keyboard. He also splits open the innovative external media dock, which connects via Intel's Light Peak technology and uses a discrete GPU to give the Vaio Z some gaming oomph. Finally, there's a separate, speeded-up video of Shinji putting the whole thing back together again from me...

Acer TravelMate Timeline 8481T isn't an Ultrabook, It Just Looks Like One
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcer
Acer isn't pitching its new TravelMate Timeline 8481T as an Ultrabook, but maybe that's because Intel is still finalizing its list of qualifications. As it stands, the 8481T is a 14-inch ultraportable that weighs just 3.7 pounds and struts around with a 0.87-inch profile, and that's with the 8-cell battery Acer says will provide up to 13 hours of run time. And though the LCD measures 14 inches, Acer trimmed the bezel by a third so that it would fit in a 13.3-inch footprint.

While Michael Dell laughs it up on Twitter, a new report suggests that Samsung could be preparing to purchase Hewlett-Packard’s PC business, which the company revealed it may soon spin off. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Samsung may be eyeing a purchase of HP’s PC division, which would catapult the South Korea-based electronics giant past Dell and into the No. 1 PC vendor spot globally. The report states that Samsung is currently meeting with various leading manufacturers including Quanta and Compal to investigate outsourcing the production of its own netbook computers. Samsung has held similar meetings in the past to no avail, but anonymous source tell DigiTimes that the company ...

Apple's A6 chip to boost speed, battery life in next iPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Apple's next iPad will be faster and more power-efficient thanks to its new, quad-core A6 processor, but the new tablet may not be ready to ship until next June, an industry analyst said Monday.
The A6 will succeed the dual-core A5 processor used in Apple's iPad 2, said Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst at the Linley Group. The A6 will likely be made by chip foundry company TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.), Gwennap said, citing multiple sources. The A5 is manufactured by Samsung, and Apple is embroiled in a legal dispute with that company. [Although many industry analysts have proclaimed knowledge of Apple's plans that seem suspect, Gwennap is an old hand in the sem...

Razer Claims PC Gaming Is Not Dead In Full-Page Wall Street Journal Ad
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop ComputersRazer
Even though Microsoft pretty much ignored us at E3, you don’t need to tell Maximum PC readers that PC gaming is not dead. Razer, being a supplier of gaming mice, unsurprisingly feels the same way. We’ve already told you that the company’s rolled out pcgamingisnotdead.com and is promising to drop some big news at PAX on August 26th, but now Razer’s upped the ante: it’s written an open letter to the major consoles in a full-page ad on the Wall Street Journal.

More evidence Apple is testing 4G LTE iPhone and iPad emerges
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksCell PhonesAppleiPhone 4siPad 3
New evidence has emerged that further confirms Apple’s ongoing tests of an LTE-enabled iPhone and iPad. BGR exclusively reported last week that multiple Apple carrier partners are currently testing iPhone models equipped with LTE radios. Our source also supplied a PLIST file containing evidence of the LTE-enabled iPhone. Now, MacRumors has discovered this LTE.plist file in iOS 5 developer builds for both the GSM iPhone 4 and the CDMA iPad 2. While the discovery of these files does not necessarily indicate that Apple plans to release 4G LTE-compatible devices in the near future, it does reaffirm that ongoing tests are being conducted with the new high-speed wireless technology.

HP Explains Decision to Shop Its PC Business
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop ComputersHP
Hewlett Packard created more waves than a tsunami yesterday when the OEM confirmed rumors that it plans to dump its PC business, yet still managed to surprise industry analysts by announcing the end of operations for webOS devices, and specifically the slow selling TouchPad and webOS phones. Now that the the dust has settled, it's time to look at why HP thinks reinventing itself is a good idea.
In one of several press releases issued late yesterday, HP said it has the full support of its board of directors to evaluate "strategic alternatives" to its Personal Systems Group, "including the exploration of the separation of its PC business into a separate company through a spin-off or other tra...

Acer MacBook Air rival now due September, redesigned twice
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcer
Acer's answer to the current MacBook Air, the Aspire 3951, has had its release moved up to September, a story in Taiwan's Commercial Times. Once thought due in December, the 'ultrabook' would move up to September. The ostensible goal was to compete with the ASUS UX21 and not necessarily Apple.
An unnamed executive added that the company had been frantically reworking the design. Its internals had supposedly been reworked twice. Only a 13-inch version would be available at first, eliminating the prospects of a system that would go head-to-head with the 11-inch UX21 and similarly sized MacBook Air.
