Xbox 360 pops up in Win 8 code, console game compatibility coming to the PC?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesOperating SystemsMicrosoftXBOX 360Windows 8
It's no secret that Microsoft is planning on integrating Xbox LIVE into Windows 8, but rumors are now swirling that Xbox 360 games might actually be playable on the next version of Redmond's OS. References to "XBOX_360_SYSTEM_CRASH" have been found in the kernel code -- an odd bit of text to show up in software that's not designed to run on the 360's PowerPC CPU. There are, of course, other, more mundane possibilities -- like the ability to remotely control your console to trigger update and game downloads, or to receive notifications from the machine on your desktop. But, if Microsoft is bringing Xbox titles to the PC, it would only serve to solidify Windows as the platform of choice gamers...

Nintendo Wii U will have 3D support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendoWii U
The Nintendo Wii U has the ability to support 3D games, but Nintendo won't be focusing on this feature when it is launched in 2012.
This is according to Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo – who was speaking to MercuryNews about its 3D capabilities.
"If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on," he explained.
"When it comes to 3D, we already have the 3DS, and each owner of the Nintendo 3DS is capable of viewing 3D images."
Wii U, me, who?
Iwata notes that the reason it is not focusing on the 3D side of gaming is because consumers aren't hungry enough for the...

PSN Pass introduced to reward original gamers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
Sony has confirmed the existence of the PSN Pass scheme, after a picture of the Resistance 3 box sporting its moniker circulated online.
The PSN Pass will be game specific and will allow people who have brought original copies of PS3 games, such as Resistance 3 in this case, access to exclusive online content.
"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," Sony said in a statement.
"This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the ...

Wii U Will Not Have Its Own Social Online Platform
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendoWii U
While Nintendo has said the next version of the Wii home console will have a better online experience, it sounds like it still won't be up to par with the PS3 or the Xbox 360.
And according to Nintendo, that is its own decision. It believes in letting third-party companies create their own, individualized online platforms, rather than creating a centralized network like the PSN or Xbox Live.
In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said the company's next home console will have a more robust online experience, commenting, "What we’re doing is creating a much more flexible system that will allow the best approaches by independent publishers to come to bear."

Sony to finally restore PSN, Qriocity in Japan on Wednesday
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
Sony has announced that it will finally restore its PlayStation Network (PSN) and Qriocity digital entertainment and media content services in Japan on Wednesday. The services have been down since April 20 when Sony’s servers suffered a massive security breach that resulted in the theft of the user data of over 77 million users. As with the restoration of service in the North America and around the world, Japanese customers will be able to take advantage of a “Welcome Back” program that includes extended and free trial memberships as well as free games.
The Japanese return to service took longer than in other parts of the world as the Japanese government wanted to be completely satisfied tha...

PS4 production in late 2011 ahead of 2012 launch tip suppliers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSony
Sony may have confirmed that the PS4 next-gen console is in development, but the company isn’t so foolish as to announce any launch details for fear of cannibalizing PS3 sales. That hasn’t stopped the tattle-tales in Taiwan, of course, which inform DigiTimes that Sony is readying production though Foxconn and Pegatron at the end of 2011.
That’s ahead of a commercial launch of the PS4 sometime in 2012, the component supply chain sources suggest. Sony supposedly expects to ship at least 20m PS4 units in 2012, though the exact release date during that year is unknown. Foxconn and Pegatron are both responsible for assembly of the current PS3.

Sony shows PS Vita using facial recognition for video chat
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony is currently demonstrating the facial recognition capabilities of the company's PlayStation Vita gaming handheld. A technology preview at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 in Tokyo, the gaming company showed how the Vita can track facial movements and use the information to guide avatar movements during a video chat session.
It is unclear if the company is planning to launch avatar-based video chat as an actual feature on the production Vita. The company recently noted that it was still evaluating non-gaming capabilities, such as web-based video playback and Skype audio chat.

Sony rolls up the PSN 'Welcome Back' mat this Sunday, takes free entertainment with it
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
Four weeks ago today, Sony announced its 'Welcome Back' campaign following the weeks-long PSN outage that began in April. Now, the program is entering its final weekend, giving you just two more days to download your pair of free PS3 or PSP games, along with 100 virtual items from PlayStation Home and 30 days of PlayStation Plus. To claim your gratis package from the PlayStation Store, click on the "Welcome Back" tab and make your pick. Sure, a few handouts may not make up for those countless days you spent offline, contemplating a switch to other networks, but free stuff is free stuff, so head over to PSN to claim what's rightfully yours before the clock strikes midnight on July 3rd.

Microsoft to unveil new Xbox at E3 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
A source with knowledge of Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division has confirmed with BGR that Microsoft intends to unveil its next-generation Xbox console at E3 2012 next summer. The source is not aware of Microsoft’s launch plans for the new Xbox, which we are told has been in development since 2006. Microsoft has sold nearly 54.4 million Xbox 360 units since the console’s introduction in November 2005. The video game system is currently the ninth most popular gaming console of all time behind Nintendo’s original NES and just ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3, which has sold 51 million units to date.

Sony came up with a price goal for NGP and then chose hardware to fit the price
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
I have been a gamer since the days of the Atari console and over the years the thing that has been a fact of the gaming world is that each successive generation of consoles tends to get more expensive. The gamer might complain about cost but if the console has some compelling features and good games many people will buy the console even if it’s expensive. Generally we see the major console developers simply choose the hardware and then price their machines accordingly.
Techon has had an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida about the coming Sony portable console dubbed NGP. In the interview Yoshida confirmed that Sony worked backwards from what...

New PSN lawsuit claims Sony layoffs to blame for hacks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
A second lawsuit over PSN hacks this week has accused Sony of cutting jobs whose absence may have worsened or contributed to the hack. A "substantial percentage" of Sony Online Entertainment, including some in the network operations center, were let go just two weeks before the April 19 incident that hit both SOE and PSN. Sony lowered its safeguards through job cuts just as the attacks came in, the lawsuit alleged.
An anonymous witness who worked for SCEA between 2006 and 2008, as well as SOE for almost half of 2010, claimed that Sony had a disproportionate stance on security. It took great care to protect the DevNetwork for companies building PlayStation games but didn't show nearly as much...

Japanese 3DS to get 3D TV service, North America waits with bated breath
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
3DS owners outside of Japan can look forward to missing out on yet another Nintendo sponsored video service -- at least for now. With the help of Fuji TV, Nintendo's Itsu no Ma ni Terebi (or "SpotPass TV") will bring a number of short format 3D TV programs to the fledgling handheld, including shows featuring cute animals, sumo wrestling idol girls, and daily tips on performing magic tricks. Like its Wii predecessor, this video service is currently a Japan-only affair, but there's still plenty of summer left for the big-N to make good on its GDC Netflix promise.
