iPhone 5 hitting UK October 21 in 16 GB and 32 GB varieties?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
An O2 sales rep has let slip that the iPhone 5 will be landing on October 21, which lines up quite nicely with earlier rumours we had heard from Best Buy. In addition to that, a Vodafone page temporarily listed 16 GB and 32 GB models in both black and white, which are some details we hadn’t heard much of yet. While neither of these hints are anything conclusive, it reaffirms most speculation that we’ll be seeing an announcement in the next couple of weeks.
The iOS 5 device software is just about ready to roll, and with it a handful of new features, like an unobtrusive notification system, while the hardware may include an 8 megapixel camera and a larger screen. Even those details are on sha...

HTC Runnymede and Bliss details sneak out from leak-town
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCBlissSensation XL
Naming your flagship handset after a small village in Surrey isn't what we'd do, but then we aren't in the handset business. The first full render of the HTC Runnymede has leaked and as you can see, it's one big heap of telephone. It's the first phone to benefit from the company's partnership with Beats Audio and will come with a pair of Beats-branded cans rather than regular earbuds. If you missed the specs first time around, the 4.7-inch, 9.9mm thick phone gets a beastly 768MB of RAM, 1.5GHZ Qualcomm chip and a serious 8 megapixel camera with f2.2 lens and double LED flash round back. Availability is still up in the air but we know that UK prices are £499 or £530 for the 16 or 32GB version...

iOS 5 landing on October 10th, iPhone 5 on October 15th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleiPhone 4siOS 5
AppleInsider is reporting that AppleCare has been informed to prepare for a swarm of inquiries on or around October 10th regarding iOS. And no, I don’t think it’s because people are suddenly going to forget how to use their iPhones and iPads that day. The report signals the release of the highly anticipated iOS 5 and iPhone 5.
Now, it’s important to note that AppleInsider’s credibility has often been hit or miss. In fact, we have a bit of a warning:
“While AppleInsider cannot verify the accuracy of the information provided, the tip did include specific details on call volumes that suggest the details are at least plausible. However, since the details come from an unproven source, the informa...

iOS 5 gold master to reach iPhone 5 last week of September
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleiPhone 4siOS 5
Apple is expected to ship the finished version of iOS 5 to manufacturers the last week of September, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo understood from sources on Monday. The current schedule would have the iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch get the completed (gold master) OS between September 23 and 30. He explained to AppleInsider that, with preloaded firmware, the devices should take about 10 to 12 days to ship and will conveniently line up with an iPhone 5 release in the first half of October.
Large-scale assembly is believed to have started in late August without available firmware. It's unclear how many will be ready on launch day and whether Apple will have enough to suppor...

Samsung Galaxy Y heading to Vodafone UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy Y
Of all the new Android smartphones Samsung announced recently, the Galaxy W was the one that grabbed instant attention, with Three and O2 lining up to start offering it later this month. Vodafone seems to care more about its little (and less powerful) brother – Galaxy Y, which got a spot in the Big Red carrier’s coming soon pages.
If you recall, this is an entry-level device with a familiar all-touchscreen form factor. Specs wise, it comes with a 3-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 832MHz processor, microSD memory card slot, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show with Sammy’s own TouchWiz UI singing on top.

Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G Touch available for $99.99 from Walmart Wireless
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungEpic 4G Touch
And we thought that Wirefly’s deal for Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G Touch was smoking hot. $150 certainly sounded great considering that the carrier itself will ask $50 more right from the start, but now Walmart Wireless has an even better offer – $100 ($99.99 to be more precise)! Of course, putting your signature on a new two-year contract is still required, but that comes as given these days. If you’ve no problem with that, hit this link and secure your Epic 4G Touch unit now… or wait for other carriers to launch their own flavors of the Samsung Galaxy S II (presuming you don’t like or want Sprint).

Cricket premieres the Samsung Vitality: the first smartphone with unlimited Muve Music
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungCricketAdmire
Regional carrier Cricket might not have hit the spotlight recently with major announcements, but its Muve Music all you can eat service, is one of the better options for feeding all of your musical hunger at a low price. Up until now, though, Muve was only available on feature phones like the Samsung Suede, which couldn’t quite elevate it. The Samsung Vitality, a branch-off of the Samsung Admire, is the first smartphone to break that sad tradition.
The Vitality comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and humble spec sheet: a 3.5-inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, an 800MHz processor, a 3.2 megapixel camera, all depending on a 1,600mAh battery. No stellar heights as you can see, .....

HTC may buy its own smartphone OS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
HTC has seen tremendous success with its Android smartphones, reporting record revenue month after month thanks to ballooning handset shipments. HTC’s Android smartphones are also the target of numerous patent attacks, however, and despite new-found support from Google, the Taiwan-based vendor is reportedly investigating alternative paths. After all, Google’s free operating system is getting expensive. Perhaps as a result, a report from Focus Taiwan states that HTC chairwoman Cher Wang has confirmed that the vendor is considering a purchase of a new smartphone operating system. Read on for more.
“We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse,”...

Samsung Focus Flash announced by AT&T, runs Mango and flies on 4G airwaves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftAT&TWindows Phone 7.5Focus Flash
The Samsung Focus Flash was among the trio of Windows Phone handsets that AT&T officially announced today, the other two being the Samsung Focus S and the HTC TITAN. It may be touted as the most affordable one out of the three, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will not have much to offer for its money.
Under its hood will tick a 1.4GHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera will be gracing its back. Its front will be occupied by a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display, and a front-facing camera will be also in stock.
On the software side, the Samsung Focus Flash will run Windows Phone Mango, just like its bigger siblings. Furthermore, all Windows Phone handsets in AT&T's lineup are expected to...

Three UK takes legal action over NFC consortium
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Three UK has filed a complaint with the EU over the proposed near field communications (NFC) payment consortium consisting of Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2.
The three major networks hope to develop a mobile wallet project that uses a pay as you go system on NFC chips that allow users to 'tap and pay' in shops and cafes.
Regulators are yet to give Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2 the go ahead, but Three isn't hanging around, having filed the legal action with the EU's antitrust authorities.
Cosy
Stephen Lerner, Three's general counsel, describes the networks' consortium as a "cosy collaboration" and said that the EU "should not allow this type of collaboration to go forward und...

Sprint rumored to retain unlimited data with iPhone 5 launch, prove unicorns are indeed legit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Here's the word straight from Bloomberg's unnamed sources: Sprint's not only getting the elusive iPhone 5 -- it's keeping an unlimited data plan around just to sway buyers who may otherwise spring for the AT&T / Verizon Wireless variants. Furthermore, these folks in-the-know have good reason to believe that it'll be launched "next month," which gives Apple a shockingly small amount of time to invite us over for a west coast reveal. As it stands, the only folks who'll get limitless data with an iPhone 5 on its existing US carriers are those with grandfathered plans; any new customers on Ma Bell or Big Red will be forced to select one of many tiered options. Not surprisingly, neither Sprint no...

LG Marquee caught on candid camera, is this Sprint's Optimus Black?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus BlackMarquee
Is this a case of smartphone identity crisis, or just a repurposed chassis? Whatever the case may be, LG's got a Marquee handset ready to shore up Sprint's future line-up. The leaked shot comes courtesy of a now private video spotted by Android Central, and was taken at a Dallas-based Radio Shack Business Summit. It's evident from the one Mr. Blurrycam screen cap on display that the phone's currently running a vanilla build of Gingerbread, and sports a minimalistic design that's reminiscent of the Optimus Black. We can't be certain the two are indeed twins, however that leaked roadmap did indicate a stateside October bow for the Optimus Black -- this could simply be a rebrand for the Now Net...

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman Android phone gets busted open by the FCC

Somebody's not wasting anytime. Just last month we reported on the musically minded Android handset, and now what looks to be a decidedly darker version of Sony Ericsson's Live with Walkman has made its way through the FCC and come out the other end in pieces -- literally. Since the outfit didn't hold back much in its initial announcement, we won't be making any big discoveries here, but if you're into dismembered smartphones we've got a gallery of the shredded handset awaiting you below.
