Major Security Hole Uncovered in Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T

Major Security Hole Uncovered in Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

While reviewing the new Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T, the folks at BGR noted something unusual. With the right combination of button presses, the device’s pattern and PIN lock screens can be bypassed. This makes locking the phone essentially pointless. The real ‘uh-oh’ here is that AT&T and Samsung were unaware of this flaw, uncovered by a simple reviewer.

Hack to enable internet sharing on the Samsung Omnia 7 now available

Hack to enable internet sharing on the Samsung Omnia 7 now available

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG1

Thanks to XDA-Developer member OndraSterthere is now a hack available to enable internet sharing on Samsung Omnia 7’s running Mango.
Interestingly the hack confirms Microsoft’s assertion about drivers, as the hack does not work on HTC handsets. The hack also reveals that there is vestigial support for Bluetooth tethering, but that this does not work.
The hack also disables the phone from checking for carrier provisioning for tethering, but this of course does not mean you will still not be charged.
The hack is a bit too complex to explain here, involving unlocking the handset, provisioning the device, replacing files and editing the registry, so really only for expert users.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits the 10 million sold mark with no help from the U.S.

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

It took the Samsung Galaxy S II one less month than the original model to reach 10 million in sales. And that total, compiled over 6 months, does not include any sales from the U.S. where the phone only recently was launched on Sprint as we reported. Considering the pent-up demand for the phone Stateside, and the great response that those who purchased the Samsung Galaxy S II, Sprint Epic 4G Touch have had to the device, the 10 million sold figure is going to rise sharply by the time Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are all done selling the device in the States..

NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Orange is betting heavily on the prospects of contactless payments, powered by NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. In the UK, they will be piloting the service using Samsung’s bada-powered Wave 578, while for its own backyard they’ll use the Samsung Galaxy S II. As far as I’ve understood, they won’t be offering some special version of the smartphone — rather they seem to talk about NFC-enabled SIM cards, something South Korea’s SK Telecom also wants to try out.
