A judge in The Hague just issued a ruling in Apple's patent infringement case against Samsung, prohibiting "the marketing of Samsung smartphones Galaxy S, S II and Ace for violation of Apple Inc. EP 2,058,868." In an official press release, the court explains that The Hague judge ruled to "ban trading of Samsung smartphones Galaxy S, S II and Ace," adding that Samsung also violated other Apple patents with its Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 10.1v, though it's not clear whether or not sales of those devices will be banned as well.

A Sprint iPhone could sell 6 million units next year, says analyst

A Sprint iPhone could sell 6 million units next year, says analyst

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Extrapolating from Verizon's 11% iPhone penetration since the iPhone 4 appeared in its portfolio, Gene Muster from Piper Jaffray concludes that the rumored appearance of the next iPhone on Sprint in October could net Cupertino 6 million units sold in 2012.

Granted, Verizon was all about Android until recently, and Sprint not so much, although it does carry the latest and greatest handsets with the green robot, so the number might be even larger than this 6 million iPhones prediction.

Sprint to offer iPhone 5 in October, WSJ reports

Sprint to offer iPhone 5 in October, WSJ reports

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

In line with recent analyst speculation, Sprint will offer the iPhone 5 in the “middle” of October, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, noting that the device will be sold at the same time as Apple’s current iPhone 4. That suggests that recent reports about the iPhone 4 being sold as a lower-priced option are accurate. Apple is expected to announce the successor to the iPhone 4 in September or October. The iPhone 5 is expected to be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4 and recent reports have suggested that it will be a “bigger update” than expected. Other reports have also suggested that the device will offer an 8-megapixel camera and a dual-core processor.

Cheaper iPhone 4 version coming soon, tip suppliers of its 8GB internal memory chip

Cheaper iPhone 4 version coming soon, tip suppliers of its 8GB internal memory chip

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

An 8GB internal memory flash drive is being manufactured for a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 by a Korean company, "people with knowledge on the matter" have disclosed for Reuters. The iPhone 4's 16GB and 32GB memory chips are made by Samsung and Toshiba, so that leaves Samsung as the most likely candidate.

What's the centerpiece of this rumor, though, is the fact that Apple might be indeed readying to announce another iPhone, which all indications show will be an iPhone 4 "lite" version, with less memory, and possibly plastic casing, instead of glass, in order to keep costs in check. The rumor that spurred the idea that the shell will be made of plastic, also claimed that the new phone fe...

More evidence Apple is testing 4G LTE iPhone and iPad emerges

More evidence Apple is testing 4G LTE iPhone and iPad emerges

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 by MG15

New evidence has emerged that further confirms Apple’s ongoing tests of an LTE-enabled iPhone and iPad. BGR exclusively reported last week that multiple Apple carrier partners are currently testing iPhone models equipped with LTE radios. Our source also supplied a PLIST file containing evidence of the LTE-enabled iPhone. Now, MacRumors has discovered this LTE.plist file in iOS 5 developer builds for both the GSM iPhone 4 and the CDMA iPad 2. While the discovery of these files does not necessarily indicate that Apple plans to release 4G LTE-compatible devices in the near future, it does reaffirm that ongoing tests are being conducted with the new high-speed wireless technology.

iPhone 3GS free on Monday at Best Buy

iPhone 3GS free on Monday at Best Buy

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 by MG15

Best Buy gave the iPhone 3GS an informal sendoff Monday with a special one-day promo. Those who buy the phone in-store on August 22 only can get it for free when paired up with a two-year AT&T contract. Its deal makes it the cheapest route to an iPhone 3GS, cutting under a $9 refurb deal.

Apple is widely presumed to be phasing out the iPhone 3GS entirely when it introduces the iPhone 5. Some signs have already emerged that the iPhone 4 will be the new entry model. Canadian provider Koodo started supporting Apple this spring by only carrying the iPhone 4, hinting that Apple wanted to cut down on iPhone 3GS production.

Apple has been accused for the second time of manipulating images presented as part of its patent infringement suit against Samsung, this time for resizing shots of the Galaxy S so that they more closely resemble the iPhone 3G. Whereas Apple’s evidence shows two identically-scaled devices, ComputerWorld points out that in fact the Galaxy S is longer and wider than the iPhone 3G.

Verizon Android share dropped substantially following iPhone 4 launch

Posted on Aug 19, 2011 by MG3

Verizon Wireless’ share of the U.S. Android market was down again in August, sinking to its lowest point since the carrier’s launch of the iPhone 4 this past March. The nation’s top carrier played a large role in popularizing Google’s mobile OS thanks to a massive $100 million marketing campaign focused on the Motorola DROID, but Apple’s smartphone has shifted demand among its subscribers. According to market research firm Chitka Insights, Verizon Wireless’ share of the Android smartphone market in the U.S. stood at 51.42% in March, the month after Apple’s CDMA iPhone 4 finally launched.
