Oracle claims billions in damages from Google's use of Java in Android, determined to get them

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG3

The lawsuit action between Oracle and Google started last August with Oracle's claims of Google infringing a bunch of Java patents in its Android code, but did you know how big this whole process is? In the latest development of the saga, Oracle states that Google tried to hide “references to the fact that Oracle damages claims in this case are in the billions of dollars.” But does Oracle really stand a chance in getting those billions?

HTC Sensation 4G official for Bell

HTC Sensation 4G official for Bell

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Bell gained the distinction of being the first if not only Canadian carrier to get the HTC Sensation 4G. Its version will be much like the international version of the 1.2GHz, dual-core Android 2.3 phone but switch over to Bell's HSPA frequencies, also shared with most Canadian carriers and AT&T, and carry 14.4Mbps. The carrier is pushing its Mobile TV app for live streaming but also plans to carry HTC's Watch movie store.
The Sensation 4G is HTC's most advanced smartphone to date and, apart from the speed, centers on a 4.3-inch, 540x960 display. It packs a 1.3-megapixel front camera and an eight-megapixel rear camera that can drive 1080p video recording. HTC' Sense 3.0 is making its first a...

Motorola chief says wireless won't kill cable yet

Motorola chief says wireless won't kill cable yet

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Motorola

Motorola Mobility chief Sanjay Jha during his time on stage at the Cable Show on Thursday downplayed the prospect that cellular data would kill cable Internet or TV anytime soon. In part referring to Comcast's gigabit cable demo at the same session, Jha didn't believe that every Internet need could be handled by cellular alone. Technologies like LTE-based 4G, which can hit 50Mbps peak in the real world, wouldn't have enough bandwidth to handle 1080p video or other very network-intense tasks.
Wired Internet access would still be the hub for a "long time to come," he said.
He added that wireless spectrum in the US was "very limited" and put a cap on what cellular carriers could do. Still, he s...

Apple holding off on new Macs until Lion launch?

Apple holding off on new Macs until Lion launch?

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Apple may be eager enough to get Mac OS X Lion on new hardware that it's delaying new Macs until Lion's July release, tipsters maintained Thursday. The new MacBook Air is reportedly already set to go and is being held back only to flash them with Lion once the software is done. AppleInsider in getting the info also believed an upgraded Mac mini and a Thunderbolt-oriented LED Cinema Display were both waiting for the same treatment.
The only delays are likely to be triggered by Lion itself being pushed back.

LG ships Optimus 3D, hints AT&T model due in weeks

LG ships Optimus 3D, hints AT&T model due in weeks

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

LG late Thursday said it had started shipping the Optimus 3D. Its range-topping Android phone should be ready to go in Europe first and is already up for pre-order at Amazon UK with a tentative July 13 ship date and a steep contract-free price equivalent to $969. Over 60 regions would get the new Optimus in the "next several weeks," hinting that the AT&T Thrill 4G is due before the end of summer.
Every version of the phone uses a dual-core TI OMAP4430 processor that LG claims has a speed edge through dual-channel memory that eliminates bottlenecks. Like its arch-rival the HTC Evo 3D, it runs on a 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D screen and can record 3D video in 720p or 1080p video in 2D using its t...

Microsoft decides to pass on WebGL over security concerns

Microsoft decides to pass on WebGL over security concerns

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Well, it looks like Microsoft is taking those warnings about WebGL pretty seriously. The company has decided not to support the web-based 3D standard because it wouldn't be able to pass security muster. Highest on the list of concerns is that WebGL opens up a direct line from the internet to a system's GPU. To make matters worse, holes and bugs may crop up that are platform or video card specific, turning attempts to plug holes in its defense into a game of whack-a-mole -- with many players of varying reliability. Lastly Microsoft, like security firm Context, has found current solutions for protecting against DoS attacks rather unsatisfying. Lack of support in Internet Explorer won't necessa...

Apple Patent Application Describes Location-Based Social Network

Apple Patent Application Describes Location-Based Social Network

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

After Ping’s not-exactly-earth-shattering launch, Apple has remained relatively quiet on the social networking front. However, a freshly discovered patent application suggests the company isn’t quite ready to toss in its friend-making towel quite yet.
Filed towards the end of 2009, the patent application describes a location-based social network that lets users find people nearby that share common interests, including books, movies, and, of course, music.
The idea bears some resemblance to Color, the recently launched photo-sharing network which groups people according to venue. Like Color, Apple’s social network can connect you to others nearby, allowing you to partake in the Internet gener...

RIM releases Q1 2012 numbers; 500,000 PlayBooks, 13.2 million smartphones shipped

RIM has announced its Q1 2012 financial results today, and, as expected, the news is not good.
The Canadian company announced that it shipped 500,000 of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets, along with 13.2 million BlackBerry smartphones. These numbers do not represent how many tablets and smartphones ultimately made it to customer's hands, and we assume there are still many PlayBooks on retailer shelves. During the investor conference call, RIM admitted that the PlayBook launch did not go as smoothly as planned. However, the company is convinced that with updates and new partner programs, the tablet will be successful in the future.

Motorola unveils Milestone 3 (DROID 3) in China

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

This increasing number of leaks over the past few weeks were a dead giveaway that Motorola had a new flagship Android phone ready to be outed, and today the company took the wraps off its third-generation headlining act: the Milestone 3. Here in the U.S., we know the Milestones better as “DROIDs,” and we’re very confident that Motorola’s latest superphone will get Verizon Wireless CMO Marni Warden’s DROID stamp of approval soon enough. In the meantime, we get to sit half way around the world and admire this sleek smartphone from afar. Beneath the phone’s familiar facade lies a dual-core processor, a 4-inch qHD display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video captur...

Nokia Windows Phones will launch in six European nations first, Finland not among them

Nokia Windows Phones will launch in six European nations first, Finland not among them

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Nokia VP Victor Saeijs has this week disclosed the six launch markets for the vanguard devices born out of the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK will all count themselves as hosts to Nokia's Windows Phone debut, but the company's mother nation of Finland has strangely been left out in the cold. Knowing Nokia, there's no doubt that once the WP7 handsets are ready they'll find themselves swiftly available worldwide, but if you care to be among the very first to own one, you'll be wanting to visit Europe's western shores -- preferably some time before the year's through, as Mr. Saeijs also reaffirmed that there will indeed be a Nokia Windows...

LG's new dual-screen Android phone for T-Mobile spotted

LG's new dual-screen Android phone for T-Mobile spotted

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

Sprint’s Kyocera Echo is currently the only dual-screen smartphone available, but the Echo may not hold that throne for much longer. Pocket-Lint has gotten its hands on several photos of a new dual-screen Android handset made by LG that’s possibly headed to T-Mobile in the U.K. The secondary display doesn’t look like it’s as versatile as the Echo’s — instead it appears limited to offering quick access to shortcuts — and it certainly has a unique split-keyboard design that would take some getting used to. The phone could launch as the Maxx Q or the Flip II if it ever makes a debut, but there’s no word if that’s definite. Hit the jump for a few more photos.

O2 in the U.K. decides against selling BlackBerry PlayBook due to customer responses

O2 in the U.K. decides against selling BlackBerry PlayBook due to customer responses

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry PlayBook launched today in the U.K. and If you live there and were planning on buying the 7 inch tablet, don't run into any O2 locations. The carrier has decided against offering the tablet to its customers and in response to O2 subscribers who say that they want to buy the device, the carrier says it refuses to sell the BlackBerry PlayBook because of "issues with customer experiences".
O2 has decided before against offering its customers a device it didn't believe in. About 2 months ago, the mobile operator decided not to offer the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to its clients, citing below average customer experience and units plagued with bugs.
In the letter sent to those O2 cus...

Sony Ericsson signs deal with NFC chip maker, gets ready to do the Xperia play

If Google ever hopes to lead the mass exodus away from credit card transactions with Google Wallet, a lot more NFC-packing handsets will need to hit the market. Thus far Sony Ericsson hasn't exactly led the near-field charge, aside Japan's Xperia Acro, but it looks like that may soon change, thanks to a deal struck between the phone maker and semiconductor producer, NXP, which will bring the company's PN65 to future Android-based Xperia models. Wave your phone after the break to check out the official announcement.

Blackberry Bold 9900 coming to Three UK in August

We got the lowdown last month on the Blackberry Bold 9900: 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 640 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and looks that say "it's business time." Back then RIM said we could snag a svelte new Bold sometime this summer. Then came word that the handset wouldn't be available until September. Now, Three UK has put the Bold 9900 up on its "Coming Soon" page and indicated it's set for an August debut. Whew, we're glad that's settled, but there's one more thing we'd like to know -- how much is it going to cost?
