Intel Throws $30 Million into Cloud and Embedded Computing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Back in early 2009, we ran a piece in the QuickStart section of Maximum PC magazine on what effect the recession was having on the tech sector and what it might mean for company roadmaps. For that piece, an Intel spokesperson told us during a phone interview the chip giant has been through tough economic times before and the company understands "you can't save your way out of a recession; you spend your way out." It's over two years later now, times are still tough, and Intel is still spending money.
Announced on Wednesday, Intel Labs said it's investing $30 million on two new Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTC) located at Carnegie Mellon University. These new centers will focus on c...

Wikipedia's Contributors Diminishing in Number
Like UnlikeHere's a challenge if you're looking to kill some time. Look up a topic on Google -- any topic -- and see if Wikipedia doesn't make the front page. This isn't exactly an impossible mission, but by and large, Wikipedia makes its presence known nearly every time we search for something, which is partially the result of an army of volunteers adding and editing content on everything under the sun. But what would happen to Wikipedia if it was suddenly starved for writers?
The open online encyclopedia hopes to never find out, however Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales recently lamented to The Associated Press his site is losing contributors.
"We are not replenishing our ranks. It is not a crisis, but I...

Google Chrome 13 Now Available to Preload Your Pages
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Back in June, Google revealed a new search technology in Chrome that would automatically preload webpages before you even click on them. For those on slower internet connections, this could shave off seconds of wait time with every click.
This week Google released Chrome 13, which brings this new preloading technology to the masses. Those who are already using Google Chrome will automatically update upon their next browser restart – but if you haven't installed Chrome yet and you want to check out Google's browser that thinks ahead for you, grab the download right here.

Intel grows in Q2 2011 GPU market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsIntel
Jon Peddie Research published its report about the GPU market in Q2 2011. The firm says GPU shipments were up 6.3 percent sequentially while PC sales grew just 2.4 percent, and that Intel made big gains in marketshare at the expense of both AMD and NVIDIA.
Between the first and second quarters, Intel purportedly enjoyed a 19.6% surge in shipments of graphics-enabled products, while AMD and Nvidia saw respective declines of 7.3% and 5.3%. Interestingly, JPR also says that Nvidia's slice of the discrete graphics market got 30% larger in the second quarter, reportedly because of design wins in many Sandy Bridge notebooks.
The research firm also sprinkles in a bit of news about the overall grap...

Several US ISPs Hijacking And Redirecting Their Customers' Search Queries
Like UnlikeWhat do you expect to come up when you search for a term in Google or Bing? Page after page of relevant results, right? Wrong, buster – at least if you're a customer of an ISP that engages in search query redirection. Late last night, a report surfaced that reveals that several ISPs, with the help of a company called PaxFire, have secretly been hijacking your traffic when you search for a certain major keywords. Why? Revenue, of course.
NewScientist broke the news, and the EFF has chimed in with tons of additional information. Hints of redirected traffic first surfaced earlier this year, when two research papers pointed out that all or most of the traffic directed at Bing, Yahoo! and Google ...

Intel's Haswell IGP to Feature DirectX 11.1, Increased Professional Application Support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsIntel
Intel's integrated graphics processors have long had a poor reputation when it comes to gaming, and while the IGPs get a little closer to competitiveness with each iteration, that is still largely true. However, there's another area in which the chips are surprisingly competitive: workstation applications.
At least on paper, Intel's current IGPs are fully certified for high-end programs like Photoshop CS5, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks, and future Ivy Bridge and Haswell IGPs add a lot of other big names to the list. This slow build-up of certifications means that Intel solutions may begin to replace dedicated FireGL and Quadro cards from AMD and nVidia in low and mid-end workstations, another cont...

Microsoft Potentially Dropping Dolby Support in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Native media playback support has been steadily improving in Windows over the years, but what most people don’t realize is that this functionality comes at a price. Dozens of third party licensing agreements are needed to playback all the different forms of audio and video you’re likely to stumble across, and over the years Dolby has benefited quite handsomely from the inclusion of its Dolby Digital Plus pack into Microsoft’s operating systems.
Dolby’s offerings are one of the key technologies behind native DVD support in Windows, and on Friday the company was forced to admit to investors Microsoft has indicated it will not be licensing any Dolby products in Windows 8. This doesn’t necessar...

The 13.3-inch laptop sports an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor, Windows 7, and works with a finger or stylus -- remember those?

We haven’t heard much recently about the rumored Amazon tablets codenamed Hollywood and Coyote, but that’s because it’s the calm before the storm. The tablets are indeed brewing and new supplier information suggests that Amazon expects to ship as much as 3 million units this fall.
According to Taiwan Economic News, Amazon has already placed orders with contract manufacturer Quanta Computer, which was responsible for RIM’s PlayBook tablet that recently received FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification. This honor will mean increased business from government procurement. Quanta will also be manufacturing Sony’s S1 and S2 tablets.

HP TouchPad now $299.99 in Staples promo
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
Tempted by that Woot $380 HP TouchPad deal we mentioned earlier today? There could be a way to get an even cheaper TouchPad, if you’re near a Staples this weekend. The retailer has already dropped the TouchPad by $100 from August 5 to 7, but webOSroundup spotted a Fatwallet coupon that promises another $100 off again. That could bring the 16GB TouchPad down to just $299.99.
Using the same coupon, you could potentially get the 32GB TouchPad for $399.99 too. The deal works because the initial $100 is an instant rebate and the second $100 is a coupon, so you’re not stacking coupons (which usually falls foul of the T&Cs).
