Mango update coming from carriers in 2-3 weeks?

Mango update coming from carriers in 2-3 weeks?

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

If this screen shot of a conversation with an O2 rep can be believed, the roll-out of the Mango update for Windows Phone 7 may start sooner than we expect.
While we know at the moment that Mango the OS itself is ready, and we have heard from HTC that their customization itself is ready also, we all expect that carriers will be the big stumbling block, delaying the release by months. If the screen shot above is any indication, Microsoft may have finally gotten the carrier’s ducks in a row and may start and finish the roll-out pretty rapidly.
We shall of course cross our fingers.

Apple posts job listing for two new product security team members

Apple posts job listing for two new product security team members

Filed in: Apple

As we reported, there has been plenty of speculation that an Apple iPhone 5 prototype has gone missing in a story eerily similar to last year's fiasco when an Apple employee left an iPhone 4 prototype at a bar. The main difference this time is, that if true, the person who has the device is keeping quiet, perhaps worried about all of the legal hassles that surrounded last year's situation.
While not the definitive last word on the matter, some might find it more than a coincidence that Apple has just posted a job listing seeking two people to add to its product security team. The job entails overseeing the protection of Apple's unreleased products. The positions are based in Cupertino, but 3...

Images appear of Honeycomb on HTC Flyer

Images appear of Honeycomb on HTC Flyer

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

It was only a couple of days ago that a RUU (ROM update utility) leaked online that contained an early build of Android Honeycomb to the HTC Flyer, but now the guys over at XDA have turned that RUU into a flashable ROM.
The screenshots show what Honeycomb looks on the HTC Flyer with the Sense user interface. It is very similar looking to the HTC Jetstream currently available on AT&T. At the moment, this ROM is not quite ready to get pushed out to Flyer owners everywhere. However, it is nice to see that it is possible in the future.
When this ROM becomes available will any of you HTC Flyer owners jump at the chance to put it on your tablet? Keep in mind that you would have to root it if you...

THX certification might soon come to smartphones and tablets

Filed in: Cell PhonesTablets

When a piece of audio gear – a multimedia receiver, audio amplifier or a home theater speaker system, carries the THX seal of approval, you know that you have something special on your hands. You know that the audio experience you are about to get from it is going to be superior to what a run-of-the-mill boombox can deliver. But does THX certification has its place among the ranks of smartphones and tablets?
Well, apparently, it does. Rick Dean, senior vice president of THX, revealed in an one-on-one briefing with Pocket-lint that the company is to start paying more and more attention to smartphones and tablets from now on. That sure makes sense as people are increasingly getting accustomed ...

iPhone 5 pre-orders now available at Deutsche Telekom

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Apple has yet to announce it’s fifth-generation smartphone, but that apparently won’t stop German carrier Deutsche Telekom from selling it. Bloomberg reported on Monday morning that it has confirmed with Deutsche Telekom that, beginning today, DT subscribers may begin reserving Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5 smartphone. The carrier will hand out coupons to customers who reserve the device, despite the fact that no confirmed details surrounding the next iPhone are available. Not even the name of the device is confirmed at this point. Apple is expected to launch a fifth-generation iPhone and an updated fourth-generation model some time next month. Invitations to a special media event at whic...

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft will end up being the big winner after Google’s acquisition of Motorola as other Android phone makers will be alienated by the prospect of rivaling with Google - this statement is not a fact, but comes from a senior executive over at Acer.
"They work against some of their clients," Walter Deppeler, Acer's Europe, Middle East and Africa operations president said. "It was a good gift to Microsoft," he added in an interview for Reuters at IFA.
With that in mind, Acer, which recently slipped from being the second-largest PC maker in the world, would be careful when placing its bets on a particular mobile platform. The company would first consider implications of the $12.5 billion Googl...

The LG Optimus 3D may have just materialized stateside in the form of the AT&T-bound LG Thrill 4G, yet it seems like the blueprints for its successor are already being drawn. In an exclusive one-on-one briefing with Pocket-Lint, Dr Henry Noh of LG shed some light on the so-called LG Optimus 3D 2, which would not only be capable of shooting 3D content and displaying it on its glasses-free 3D display, but will likely stand out with a super slim waistline as well.
At least, that is how the LG Optimus 3D 2 is shaping up on a conceptual level. The handset is planned to boast a thickness of about 7 millimeters in order to grab the attention of consumers with both features and looks. Wise move, we'...

HTC Ruby found in the jungles of Thailand

HTC Ruby found in the jungles of Thailand

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Last month a blurry photo and a rough spec sheet for a device known as the HTC Ruby started circling around the internet. The Ruby was also said to be coming to the United States as the “Amaze 4G” on T-Mobile. Thanks to the Thai website Droid Sans, we now not only have clearer pictures of the Ruby, but confirmation that the absolutely ridiculous spec sheet we saw in August wasn’t just a fanboi’s wet dream, but indeed real. You’re looking at a device with a 4.3 inch screen that has a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a dual core 1.5 GHz processor that’s paired up with 1 GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash, a forward facing 2 megapixel camera, and best of all support for 42 Mb...

Sony Tablet S now available for pre-ordering the UK, could be yours for 399.99 GBP

Sony’s recently announced Tablet S is now available for pre-ordering in the UK. Users can choose between three models – 16GB Wi-Fi, 32GB Wi-Fi and 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G. If you don’t need 3G connectivity on a tablet and really dig that folded magazine look and feel, you can secure the 16GB model for 399.99 GBP. The 32GB version could be yours for 100 pounds more, which is also the price of the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model.
When it comes to availability date, Dixons — which claims to have an exclusive two-week pre-order window — lists September 16 for 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet S and September 23 for the 32GB Wi-Fi Tablet S. No date was given for the 3G-enabled model, though.

Nokia 801 (or N8-01) makes its first cameo appearance, comes with an edge-to-edge screen

Nokia 801 (or N8-01) makes its first cameo appearance, comes with an edge-to-edge screen

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

The Nokia 801 seems to be the latest leak in Nokia's pipeline. The device could have been called the Nokia N8-01 in Nokia’s previous naming routine, making it the successor to the company’s current flagship, the Nokia N8. And it’s got the stylish looks to prove it with a different form factor focused around an edge-to-edge qHD screen, if we are to link this model with the rumored about N8-01. How did we find out about it? The Nokia 801 video teaser was in the list of promo videos on a Nokia 700 device left over at a booth at IFA. We wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of this being just a concept, possibly to demo NFC, which somehow made it to the Nokia 700, but there are plenty of ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pulled from IFA 2011 because of a new Apple injunction against it

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pulled from IFA 2011 because of a new Apple injunction against it

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

The mysterious yanking of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet from the show floor at the IFA 2011 expo has been confirmed by Samsung to be caused by a preliminary injunction Apple secured against the tablet on Friday, September 2.
Cupertino already scored one injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany, and, although Samsung labeled its first tablet sample with Super AMOLED display as "Not for sale in Germany" on the following day of the expo, this obviously hadn't been enough to secure its continuous presentation on the floor of IFA 2011.
James Chung, a Samsung spokesperson from the Korean headquarters, has confirmed for Bloomberg that Apple has been granted an injunction to ban...

It appears that two Apple investigators, with the help of 4 San Francisco Police officers, searched a house in Ingleside that was thought to contain the missing iPhone 5 prototype that was lost recently in a San Francisco bar and later thought to have been sold on Craigslist for $200.
While police had initially denied having been involved in any such search with Apple employees, the department later released a statement confirming that it had, in fact, participated.
The search failed to turn up the device.

Homeland Security warns of pending Anonymous attacks

Posted on Sep 05, 2011 by MG1

The US Department of Homeland Security released a warning bulletin today regarding the planned activities of Anonymous. The DHS National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) used the bulletin as an opportunity to inform financial institutions about Anonymous' attempts to "solicit ideologically dissatisfied, sympathetic employees."
Although largely unsuccessful, Anonymous has made previous attempts via Twitter to coax usernames and passwords out of disgruntled financial workers. The bulletin noted that "unwilling coercion through embarrassment or blackmail may be a risk to personnel."
The bulletin was marked unclassified and addressed openly to those in charge of cybers...
