LG Electronics swang back to profit in the last quarter, but it’s mobile division has continued to bleed cash and the company has reportedly now slashed workforce by 30% at its mobile offices overseas.
The move is a part of a wider reform to optimize expenses and push LG’s mobile business back to profitable. LG’s mobile unit has suffered five quarters of losses in a row. It narrowed down loss nearly twice last trimester but still ended last quarter with $52.5 million in the red.
The layoff plan includes mostly people in the marketing and purchasing resources. Some outlets which haven’t turned profitable will also be suht down, according a report by the Korea Economic Daily. LG is also said t...

Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Coming in October or November?

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG1

Last Friday, Google chairman Eric Schmidt slipped that Android 4.0, the next major overhaul to the mobile operating system, will be released in "October or November."
Speaking to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff at the Dreamforce conference, Schmidt said, "We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October, November." Scroll down to watch the entire keynote; Schmidt slips at 30:28 mark, as reported by AndroidandMe.com.
Up to now, Google hasn't provided a release date for Ice Cream Sandwich, but perhaps Schmidt thought it was an obvious point given unconfirmed reports of Verizon possibly launching the Droid Prime, the firs...

Velocity Micro Cruz T408 8-inch tablet gets its FCC credentials, goes on sale at $240

Velocity Micro Cruz T408 8-inch tablet gets its FCC credentials, goes on sale at $240

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG1

The T408 has been loitering around pre-order pages for a while now, but without a nod from the FCC it was going nowhere. Fortunately, it's just been given a clean bill of 802.11 b/g/n health and can be yours for $240 from Best Buy Amazon. That outlay gets you an 8-incher with a front-facing camera, 4GB of built-in storage and a microSD slot. Watch out though: like previous Cruz tablets, it omits Android Market support out of the box, which tells you something about its target audience.

Google gives HTC Patents to Sue Apple

Google gives HTC Patents to Sue Apple

I am not a fan of patent wars in the technology space. Especially if its about software patents. In most cases consumers lose at the end as innovation and broad availability of products get stifled. Apple is currently trying to slow down the Android camp with patent infringement lawsuits. Samsung and HTC are the most well known targets right now. HTC has got now indirect support from Google. Bloomberg reports that HTC has sued Apple yesterday using a bunch of patents they got from Google.
Looking at what the lawsuit is about, it just shows how lame these patent battles are. The infringed patents are about a way to upgrade software wirelessly, a way to transfer data between a microprocessor a...

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

HP sent an email to customers today, informing them of a 6- to 8-week wait for the backordered HP TouchPad tablets. The tablet has been sold out at retailers and on HP’s website after the $99 fire sale that followed HP’s announcement of discontinuing WebOS. Many customers that ordered through HP at the fire sale pricing are still waiting for the device as HP plans one last production run.
Rumors began last week that HP would produce another batch of HP TouchPads or even possibly resurrect the tablet. The supply side was stuck with excess inventory, said to include components for 100,000 units of the HP TouchPad Go, a 7-inch version that will no longer see the light of day. HP promptly confir...

The term Carousel refers to a photo library. When a photo is added to the Carousel on a desktop Mac, for instance, it will automatically appear in the Carousel of every other connected device a few seconds later. Similarly, a photo taken with an iPhone 4 and loaded directly into the Carousel will also appear on all connected devices automatically.

Facebook 2011 Revenue to exceed $3 Billion

Facebook 2011 Revenue to exceed $3 Billion

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Facebook was able to "milk" its 750 million users for $1.6 billion in the first half of 2011 according to a Reuters report. So on average Facebook so far earns about $4 per user this year if the revenue is going to hit $3 billion for the full year. Of course Facebook users do not pay anything, advertisers do. It is still not that much that Facebook is able to make from their massive user base. Facebook needs some really good ideas to make more money from its users to rectify the valuation that is supposed to be beyond $80 billion by now.
Facebook is expected to go public next year. At that point Facebook needs to report quarterly earnings. We will see how well that will go. See also our earl...

Looks like Amazon is really ramping up its Android efforts in preparation for a tablet launch by offering a new incentive to developers. Starting today, the online retailer will be giving a $50 voucher for Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Android developers who submit an app to the Amazon Appstore.
Amazon’s AWS offers a variety of cloud-computing services and forms the backbone of a large portion of online businesses. For developers, the AWS offers access to a cloud solution and other services for building and deploying apps, including for social, gaming, media, and business. To be eligible, developers will have to register to be a member of the Amazon Appstore for Android.

iPhone 5 test photo supposedly leaks

iPhone 5 test photo supposedly leaks

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

It may look like a tempting plate of uni, hirame and other sushi delights, but this photo may actually be the first publicly-spotted photo taken by the iPhone 5. Caught on Flickr, although the description suggests it’s the product of an iPhone 4, the EXIF data says different. Cropped down to roughly 5-megapixels from its original 3264 x 2448 – or roughly 8-megapixels, the expected resolution of the iPhone 5 camera – the location data suggests it was taken by an Apple engineer eating lunch in the campus canteen.
If this really is the product of an iPhone 5 prototype, then photographers have some fun incoming. According to the EXIF, the camera that shot the image has a 4.3mm f/2.4 lens, a cons...

Did Netflix just start limiting users to one movie stream at a time? No

Did Netflix just start limiting users to one movie stream at a time? No

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Over the last couple of days, some Netflix users have reported getting error messages whenever they tried to view Watch Instantly video streams on two different devices at the same time. While some reports have suggested that along with instituting a price hike September 1st it also decided to start cracking down on multiple streams, it turns out there's a simpler explanation. According to spokesman Steve Swasey, the policy is still the same and no Netflix member is limited to less than two streams at once. The messages people are seeing indicating otherwise? An "error" the company is correcting. Glitches suck, and are becoming a bit too routine on the service for our liking -- Hacking Netfl...

DigiNotar enquiry widens amid fears of more breaches

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

The investigation into the breaches we reported on last week will be widened in an effort to learn whether private data of Dutch citizens has been compromised. It's been suggested that more than 500 fake certificates have been issued, including certificates for the British SIS (better known as MI6), the Israeli Mossad, the CIA, Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter. The massive list includes certificates that can even be used to send fake update notices for Windows updates.
The Dutch Government took over operational management of DigiNotar's systems and has already revoked every single SSL certificate, including those used for its citizens to file online tax returns. The embattled company must no...

Samsung GT-I9250 'confirmed' as Google Nexus Prime

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Samsung's upcoming GT-I9250 smartphone has been pretty much confirmed as the Google Nexus Prime based on the handset's user agent profile (UAP) hosted on a Samsung-owned website.

Sitting on the wap.samsungmobile.com domain, the UAP is titled nexusprime.xml and makes reference to the model number GT-I9250 – we already guessed that this would be the Nexus Prime, leaving the GT- I9220 as be the Samsung-branded version of the phone.
The other sliver of information gleaned from the file is that the handset will have a 480x800 WVGA resolution display – which fits with the rumoured Super AMOLED screen we've been hearing so much about.
The prime of life
Sadly there's no indication of whether or not...
