Ubuntu 12.04 to replace traditional menus with new HUD
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxUbuntu
Ubuntu is set to replace the traditional menu system with a head-up display (HUD), enabling users to type or speak commands in its upcoming April 2012 long term support (LTS) release of the popular Linux distribution. Rather than using the traditional drop down menu, the Ubuntu HUD uses a transparent text box in which you can type or speak what you want to do to perform actions or tasks.
Canonical founder and former CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced the new feature on his blog. "The core idea [of HUD] is to get to a world where people can direct an application to do what they want," he said. "Having stated your intent, the application leads you down a simple journey to get that done."

HTC's UK chief wants to ease off the new-product gas, focus on 'amazing hardware'
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
If you ever thought remembering HTC's titanic product line was like trying to recall the Greek alphabet, then it seems you're not alone. Phil Roberson, head of the firm's UK operations apparently thinks the display cabinet is getting a little crowded, too, telling Mobile Magazine "We have to get back to focusing on what made us great – amazing hardware." No surprises that there's been a tightening of focus after filing disappointing results just earlier this month. There's already been the odd whisper of new directions for HTC, and this year's phone roll-out is already under way, but with Roberson suggesting tablets aren't high on its list of priorities this year, we're banking on further de...

Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
NVIDIA today released a new version of its CUDA parallel computing platform, which will make it easier for computational biologists, chemists, physicists, geophysicists, other researchers, and engineers to advance their simulations and computational work by using GPUs.
The new NVIDIA CUDA parallel computing platform features three key enhancements that make parallel programing with GPUs easier, more accessible and faster. These include:
- Re-designed Visual Profiler with automated performance analysis, providing an easier path to application acceleration
- New compiler, based on the widely-used LLVM open-source compiler infrastructure, delivering up to 10 percent speed up in application per...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel has snapped up around 190 patents and 170 patent applications from RealNetworks, along with the company’s next-gen video codec software, with the two firms pledging to work together on future multimedia codecs. The deal, worth around $120m, will see Intel acquire RealNetworks’ “foundational streaming media patents” though the company will be licensed to use the patented technology moving forward.

GPS interference tests "unfair" claims LightSquared
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGPS
There is a lot of money at stake with LightSquared's wholesale mobile network. Besides high priced contracts with Sprint and other potential customers, many vulture investors are investing big bucks hoping to have a say in the restructuring of the company if it goes bankrupt. At the heart of the matter is the interference to GPS systems that the government claims comes from LightSquared's technology. The problem is that traffic on LightSquarted's network would bleed into the GPS system.
Tests done in 2010 by the Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing National Executive Committee forced LightSquared to move the frequency it uses to one as far away as possible from any neighboring GPS ...

Valve releases official Steam app
Like UnlikeToday is a somewhat big day for those of you out there who are fans of Valve and its Steam service, because today is the day where you finally get an official app for both iOS and Android to access a number of Steam features. Of course, there is a big caveat with this release.
The app is all about accessing the Steam community and will allow users on both mobile platforms to chat with Steam friends, browse community groups and user profiles, read the latest gaming news and find out about Steam sales. Unfortunately, it is a closed beta right now, and the only way to sign up to get access to the beta is by downloading the app.

Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino, but that doesn't mean Samsung isn't raking in cash at an astonishing clip. We reported earnings estimates a few weeks ago, but now it's official that the firm posted a 5.3 trillion won ($4.7 billion) operating profit in Q4 2011. That represents over a 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ($42 billion) in sales, thanks in no small part to the over 300 million phones Sammy sold last year. While mobile accounted for roughly 40 percent of company sales and half of its operating profit (2.6 trillion won, or $2.3 billion), its semiconductor business did almost as well, rak...

Nintendo cuts 3DS sales forecast, will report first annual loss
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo recently published a note in which it said it will report an annual operating loss of 45 billion yen ($575 million) for the December quarter. Analysts had expected the Japan-based gaming giant to report a 4.2 billion yen loss, Reuters said Thursday. The company now expects to ship 10 million Wii consoles, instead of the original 12 million projected, and 14 million units of its portable 3DS gaming consoles, down from 16 million units. ”We had higher expectations for the year-end season, but failed to meet them,” President Satoru Iwata said while speaking to press in Osaka, Japan. Three analysts speaking to Reuters all agreed that Nintendo needs to rethink its strategy and understand...

HTC Rezound is a "secret" global phone?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCRezound
Some enterprising HTC Rezound owners at the XDA Developers forums have discovered that by putting a GSM SIM card in the Rezound that you get more network options to choose from. Switching will reportedly allow owners to place and receive calls on GSM networks, although the phone often resets itself. In some cases they are reporting data access over GSM networks as well, although SMS is generally reported to not be working.
It’s important to note that the FCC did not note or test any GSM radio or antenna in the Rezound, so something fishy is going on here. Yet it seems that too many people have confirmed using the GSM radio for it to be an elaborate hoax, and the Qualcomm MSM8660 SoC does inc...

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Google has finally enabled Windows Phone 7 users to sync their phone with multiple Google calendars. Up till now WP7 users had to spoof the process by using an iOS device to select the calendars at m.google.com/sync since the feature had always been available on that platform.
Of course this does not mean Google are now Windows Phone fans – their instructions are still for Windows Mobile, a very deprecated platform now.
Microsoft has not made any pretence of being fans of Google, and have taken advantage of the recent brouhaha surrounding Google’s new permission to spy privacy policy to publish a short 3 step guide to moving your Gmail account to Windows Phone 7.

Google Wants Android Devs to Forget About 'Menu' Key
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google today explained in a blog post that it wants developers to stop creating applications that support the dedicated Menu button. Moving forward, Google wants all apps to use the ActionBar that's part of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Google explained, "Not only should your apps stop relying on the hardware Menu button, but you should stop thinking about your activities using a 'Menu button' at all. Your activities should provide buttons for important user actions directly in the Action Bar (or elsewhere on screen). Those that can’t fit in the action bar end up in the action overflow." Google hopes that this move will create a more uniform look and feel to the behavior of Android devices...

Amazon Wireless offering up the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for only $100
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAmazonGALAXY Nexus
Amazon Wireless is known for some rockin’ deals when it comes to new smartphones but its latest offering is a doozy. You can grab the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for a mere $100 on a new two-year contract with Verizon.
The Galaxy Nexus was officially released on Verizon just a little over a month ago, so seeing the powerful handset come in at this price is pretty awesome. Those who craved the Pure Google experience on the handset but weren’t in love with paying up $300 now have their chance to get the best of both worlds. That said, if you’re serious about grabbing one of these bad boys at this discounted rate, we’d suggest you do so as soon as possible. At this price, the offer probably won’t be a...

Android’s tablet market share rises to 39 percent in Q4 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
We know that the strategy ultimately ensures success in some ways but we’re still surprised with the number of Android tablets in the world. The latest numbers for Q4 of 2011 have arrived and tablets running Google’s mobile operating system has risen to 39%. While the Android tablet market is gaining steam, it’s probably safe to assume that the sharp rise is likely due to the Kindle Fire.
This new data comes to us from Strategy Analytics, which has counted the Kindle Fire into the Android mix. If this data was collected from Google itself, the market share of Android tablets would likely be a bit lower, as it only counts devices that ship with Google applications installed. Nonetheless, the ...

Apple town hall gives staff $500 off of Macs, $250 off iPads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
The tease of an Apple town hall meeting has been followed up with apparent confirmation that it was internally focused. CEO Tim Cook was said by 9to5 to have instituted a plan where staff get $500 discounts on Macs and a $250 drop on the price of an iPad. Only the Mac mini would be excluded from the deal, which may well see the systems sold virtually at cost.
To curb abuse, the company will reportedly limit the discount to those who have been employed with Apple for at least 90 days and only let them take advantage of the deal every three years. Apple staff until now have already been getting 25 percent discounts on Macs; it's unknown if they still get that discount outside of the three-year...

Galaxy Note S Pen makes sense for larger screens, says Samsung
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Note
Could the Galaxy Note's S Pen stylus be coming to other Samsung products in the future? That's the proposition hypothesized by Ryan Bidan, Samsung's product marketing manager, in an interview with Laptop. He thinks that the stylus "continues to make a lot of sense across a number of screen sizes, like the larger is more obvious of those," before going on to say "that’s about as specific as I can be without announcing a product." That would certainly seem to suggest that Samsung is considering the S Pen for future models of its Galaxy Tab, though we suppose he could also be talking about Windows 8 devices. We didn't find much use for the S Pen in our Galaxy Note review, but it's possible that...
