Samsung is accusing Apple of violating on some of its patents regarding 3G and UMTS technologoy, but Judge Andreas Voss of the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany dismissed those allegations.
That’s not the end of the legal saga in Europe, though - Samsung has three other lawsuits filed regarding 3G and UMTS, and the outcome of them will depend on the judge’s decision of how valid the Koreans patent really is. If the patent is indeed valid Samsung could still...

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Motorola apparently plans on slicing and dicing the Motorola RAZR with the Motorola RAZR DE (Developer's Edition) coming in Europe with an unlocked bootloader out of the box. The company says that the phone "allows us to continue meeting our carrier and regulatory obligations, but also meets the needs being expressed by our developer community." Motorola's blog post (that has since been removed but remained on Google Reader), says that the MOTODEV site would offer support for unlocking, relocking and locating build files for the "DE' model.
The MOTODEV site is also where U.S. consumers will find out about when a similar model that is being built for the States will be ready. Motorola has rec...

Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

According to a leaked recent Nokia presentation Windows Phone users will have to wait till Apollo before they can connect to IPv6-only networks.
In the middle of last year it had been believed Windows Phone 7 Mango will support IPv6 due some entries on Microsoft’s Mango .net documentation, but in practice on IPv6-only networks Windows Phones are not able to get IP addresses.
As can be seen from the graphic above while IPv6 support is very variable, Windows Phone has the poorest support amongst the major and not so major operating systems.

At this same time, the FCC had required manufacturers to install special equipment into devices that would benefit from Super Wi-Fi.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has responded angrily to allegations that the company knowingly used manufacturing partners guilty of labor abuses, telling staff that “we care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain” and calling the accusations “offensive.” Cook blasted the NY Times report in an internal email to Apple employees, spilled to 9to5Mac; “Any suggestion that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us” the CEO wrote. “As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It’s not who we are.”

Poland’s politicians don Anonymous-style Guy Fawkes masks in anti-piracy protest

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Polish politicians donned Guy Fawkes masks in parliament this week, in protest of a SOPA-style anti-piracy agreement signed by the government. Members of the leftwing Palikot’s Movement produced apparently home-made masks – popularized by comic-turned-film V for Vendetta and now largely associated with hack-collective Anonymous - to show their disdain for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) the AP reports.

The FBI Is Already Getting Sued for Shutting Down MegaUpload

The FBI Is Already Getting Sued for Shutting Down MegaUpload

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Well that didn't take long. Pirate Parties International is assembling a list of users who had lost data in MU's shutdown last week as it builds a case for an upcoming lawsuit against the Feds.

The gist of the lawsuit is that users who had been using the file-storage service of legitimate reasons were unfairly denied access to their personal files due to the FBI's actions. "The widespread damage caused by the sudden closure of Megaupload is unjustified and completely disproportionate to the aim intended," said Pirates of Catalonia in a press statement.

FBI accuses insider of stealing Federal Reserve computer code

FBI accuses insider of stealing Federal Reserve computer code

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Computer programmer Bo Zhang had access to data that only a privileged few have the authority to touch. He worked for the Federal Reserve and dealt with sensitive information on a regular basis. He scored security clearance levels that most foreign entities would die for. And what happens when you get to play with hyper sensitive government data?
You make a copy of that data and use it in training materials that you use in your side business, right? Well maybe you don’t, but that’s exactly what the FBI alleges Mr. Zhang did. That’s right; he didn’t use the information for personal gain or to plan an attack on the Federal Reserve. He used it because he wanted to have a nice-looking set of dat...

Samsung Wave Y LeFleur Edition revealed

Samsung Wave Y LeFleur Edition revealed

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

If you thought the one thing missing from Samsung’s entry-level Wave Y S5380 phone was a pink floral design, you’re in luck. The manufacturer has launched a new version of the device, dubbed the LaFleur edition, with a bold pink-and-black motif. The inscription “LaFleur” appears on the front of the phone while the back, donned in pink, is etched with a full-body floral print.
The Samsung Wave Y S5380 runs on the Bada 2.0 platform, which is designed for low-end handsets. The S5380 is the lowest of those low-end devices, coming in at an unsubsidized price of just $165, at least in the Ukraine. That remains the only country where the LaFleur edition phone is available, at least for the time bei...

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

A seemingly minor decision for Windows 8 in the post-developer preview versions has shown an about-face by Microsoft in its approach to design. During new demos on Thursday to TechRadar, Windows 8 communications lead Chris Flores explained that users wouldn't be allowed to change the background of the main Metro screen to their own photo. Scaling was an issue, but Microsoft had also decided that the home screen tiles would cover it up too much, defeating the point of a custom image.
In its place, Microsoft is offering a mix of basic styles with color themes, each of which has a coordinating set of hues for the trim. The login screen will still allow a custom photo, much like Windows Phone.

Google: "Hundreds" of schools use Chromebooks‎

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Google's Chromebooks haven't exactly seen the kind widespread consumer adoption the company would like, but apparently they are starting to make some small inroads in the education market. During his keynote at the annual Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC) conference in Orlando, Google's Rajen Sheth revealed "hundreds of schools across 41 states" have at least one classroom with Chromebooks.
The exact figures were not revealed so it's impossible to know how many individual Chromebooks have actually made their way into the U.S. school system. However, the company did announce three new major deployments that will see 27,000 students provided with Chromebooks in Illinois, Iowa an...
