Pirate Bay to take its servers to the skies

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

The Pirate Bay has announced that it is turning to the skies to house its servers and is looking into sending a drone into low orbit, so that the only way someone can shut down its operations is by aeroplane.
In a blog post which wouldn't look out of place on 1 April, the folks behind the Pirate Bay are fed up with the heat they are getting on the ground so they have decided to make use of the latest technology – namely Raspberry Pi – and literally take flight.
"With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the ai...

We reported back in December that Google had pushed back its global roll out of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S as it wanted to monitor feedback from the few Nexus S users who did receive the update.

Hackers have their hands on code that Microsoft created the show off an attack. Apparently, Microsoft shared the proof of concept code with members of its Microsoft Active Protection Program. The proof of concept code was shared with various antivirus vendors to allow them to protect end-users from similar attacks.
Microsoft found out the proof of concept code was in hacker hands this past Friday when an Italian security researcher named Luigi Auriemma discovered the code on a Chinese website. He found it was identical to what he had provided HP during one of its bug bounty programs. The code he provided was used by HP’s TippingPoint Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) to create a working exploit for ...

Scientists have been taking inspiration from printers for everything from treating burns to recreating cardiac tissue. Researchers at Clemson University have perfected a way to use an ordinary inkjet printer to actually print living cells — and they've put together a how-to guide and video for the Journal of Visualized Experiments to show how it works. Starting with an HP DeskJet 500, researchers empty a normal inkjet cartridge, and then fill it with a solution of suspended cells and fluorescent matter, the combination of which they call "bio-ink." A platform is set up beneath the printer head and layered with slides to receive the output. Using a standard word processor to drive the printer...

WhatsTrending found Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak waiting in line for his new iPad at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles. “My wife was the first [in line], I was the second,” said Woz. “We came at about noon. We’re used to Northern California where the stores lines start early.” Of course the co-founder could simply receive the tablet directly from Apple, however Wozniak believes waiting in line has become somewhat of a ritual. “It’s not something that I have to do. Nobody needs to wait in line. You can pre-order… But I’d rather be there genuine like the real people. I want to be one of the people lined up and wait all night. Apple’s just that important to so many of us. You don’t live fo...

Google leaves data center servers in the dark

Google leaves data center servers in the dark

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

It sounds like some folks at Google are starting to go a little nuts over security. Apparently, Google is building a new data center in Silicon Valley and is so paranoid about security that it is said to be forcing the geeks working on the servers to work in the dark. As long as folks at Google don’t start urinating in jars with Howard Hughes-style levels of paranoia, I guess this is okay.

If you're a Gundam fan from back in the early '80s Mobile Suit days or more of a newcomer who jumped onto the SEED bandwagon, you'll get a kick out of the new Gundam-themed Agusta case Raidmax showed off yesterday. Not the cartoony type? That's okay -- the ATX and MicroATX-compatible case still looks pretty cool even if you have no concept of the lore behind the Augusta Newtype Lab.
The front of the Agusta sports five tool-less 5.25-inch drive bays with pop-off panels, all of which are covered by the case's "Gundam themed armor-shield," which opens outward like a door. Illuminated fans in front and on top (there are 7 fans total) add to the sci-fi appeal, while you'll find six additional 3.5...

Hackers Publish Exploit Code for 'Wormable' RDP Hole; MAPP Leak Suspected

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG2

On Tuesday, Microsoft issued a patch to plug a critical hole in Windows’ Remote Desktop Protocol. Fearing the possibility of an exploit being developed in the “next 30 days,” the company “strongly” advised the immediate deployment of this patch in a blog post detailing the said RDP vulnerability (CVE-2012-0002). Well, it seems that Microsoft was right about the vulnerability being highly attractive to hackers.

Chinese hackers are said to have already published proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit code for the RDP hole. But there seems to be something even more troubling here than the exploit code itself. It’s feared that the hackers who published the code on a Chinese language forum might have ha...

HTC Vivid Android 4.0 Sneaks Out For Some

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG2

The long road to Android 4.0 for US subscribers seems to be getting shorter; and for some lucky users the time has come. AT&T's HTC Vivid was one of their first LTE devices, and made the list of HTC devices that would be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich. Typically these OTA updates are pushed after extensive testing and to a handful of devices at first. However, as first reported on Android Central, some owners were able to pull the update by dialing *#*#682#*#*. The update includes HTC's updated Sense 3.6 skin, which seems a little less intrusive than their prior iterations and does open up its Beats Audio feature to third party applications for the first time.

"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an email making the rounds. "For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360-and it’s the best year ever for Xbox 360."
