Megaupload users face fake settlement requests, but MPAA says it's not keeping data to sue users
Like UnlikeMegaupload may be gone, but its users are just starting to feel the pressure of potential legal action for copyright infringement. The MPAA has petitioned Carpathia, which hosts 25 petabytes of files formerly from Megaupload, to keep it in hopes of using the user data and other information as part of a lawsuit against the company. In the letter, which surfaced as part of a court filing by Carpathia, the MPAA states that it wants the data because "the Studios have civil claims against the operators of Megaupload, and potentially also against those who have knowingly or materially contributed to the infringement occurring through Megaupload." Among other information (PDF), the MPAA is seeking ...

Some AIM users hit with login problems, AOL 'working on a fix'
Like UnlikeThings haven't been easy lately for AOL's Instant Messenger service, with recent layoffs striking such a chord that the company had to publicly insist that it wasn't going to be shuttering AIM altogether. Things got a little bit worse today, with Gizmodo reporting that many long-time users have found themselves unable to access their accounts via third-party clients. Some individuals faced with the "AOL does not allow your screen name to authenticate here" error were reportedly able to accept new terms of service and reset their passwords directly on AIM.com. Of course, with AIM having been out in the marketplace for such a long time — the service originally launched way back in 1997 — the q...

Google defends Hotfile's right to 'safe harbor' under DMCA
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The MPAA filed lawsuit against Hotfile little over a year ago, arguing that the cyberlocker had made a business out of enabling massive digital theft by giving users a place to store and share pirated movies. According to TorrentFreak, this request didn't go unnoticed by Google, who has become a somewhat unexpected ally of Hotfile with the filing of an 'amicus brief' objecting to the MPAA's "distortion" of the facts. According to Google, the movie studios are misleading ...
