Nvidia: We’re No Longer In The Processor Business Because Intel “Preferred That We Weren’t”

If the meek capitulation in the headline sounds uncharacteristic of Nvidia’s infamously outspoken CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, it’s probably because he’s bitter. Though the GPU-focused company announced way back in 2008 that it was going to “open a can of whoop-ass” on Intel, very little has happened, at least on the consumer side. Intel and Nvidia have had some major differences, and remain fierce competitors, but it’s been made clear that Intel won’t tolerate anyone making a grab at its x86 treasure hoard.

Nvidia sees Windows Phone as a “growth opportunity”

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, not content with leaking possible Windows Phone 7/Windows 8 app compatibility also appears to be hinting at an expansion of Windows Phone 7 processor compatibility to Nvidia Tegra chipsets.
Speaking to investors yesterday, he mentioned the company expects to profit from Windows 8 tablets by creating Quad-Core Kal-El Plus chips optimised for Windows 8.
"The Windows 8, Windows on ARM, coming out toward the end of next year, or the year thereafter, is going to be a growth opportunity for us," Huang predicted.

NVIDIA is experimenting with game streaming technology that would allow users to stream games from PCs to other devices around their homes as the chaps over at bittech found out:
'Imagine you're playing Crysis 2 on your PC and you're able to stream it around your home to a tablet device, which you could then plug into your TV if you wanted,' said the Nvidia representative.

NVIDIA Holds 50.6% Notebook Discrete Graphics Market in Q2 2011

After a period of sales lead by AMD in the category of notebook discrete graphics, NVIDIA's sales grew in Q2 2011 by 8.9pp, taking it to 50.6%, making it the leader in the category by a slim margin. Analysts predict that this figure will only go up in the third quarter of 2011, as ASUS, MSI, and Clevo are scheduled to launch more GeForce 500M series based notebooks in the quarter. These include ASUS 17-inch G74SX and 15-inch G53SX, both which use GeForce GTX 560M; MSI's GT780 and GT683 based on GTX 570M, and Clevo's 17-inch X7200 that packs GTX 580M.

Last week NVIDIA posted their fiscal Q2 2012 (not a typo) financial results, and while they don’t break down how much money was made by each individual product line, Jen-Hsun Huang (pictured above), NVIDIA President and CEO, said that the company’s guidance for the next quarter looks better than ever thanks to Tegra. Revenues hit $1.02 billion, up 26% from the same quarter last year, and in terms of profits, during this quarter last year the company actually lost $175 million. Steve Scott is an accomplished man. For the past 19 years, Scott's been working at Cray, where he served as vice president and CTO for the past 6 years. Prior to that, he was the chief architect of the Cray X1 scalable vector supercomputer and helped design several other Cray systems, including the XT, XE, and "Cascade" systems. Scott holds 27 U.S. patents in a variety of geeky areas (cache coherences and scalable parallel architectures to name just two), and is now bringing all that brain power to Nvidia.

NVIDIA GeForce 280.26 WHQL Software Suite Released

NVIDIA today released this month's first major GeForce software update, version 280.26. The suite provides the latest WHQL-signed drivers for all NVIDIA GeForce GPUs since 6-series, and ION platform. It includes updated PhysX system software (v9.10.0514), and NVIDIA HDMI audio drivers (v1.2.23.3). The new drivers include support for SLI on AMD 990FX, 990X, and 970 desktop chipsets (on certified motherboards only). Apart from that, the 3D Vision component has undergone a massive overhaul.

Nvidia promises to ship next-gen Kepler GPU this year (not!)

Update (8/5): Nvidia has clarified a previous statement regarding availability of its next-gen GPU codenamed Kepler. In a nutshell, Nvidia won't be shipping any final products using the new silicon this year. "Although we will have early silicon this year, Kepler-based products are actually scheduled to go into production in 2012. We wanted to clarify this so people wouldn’t expect product to be available this year," said Ken Brown, a spokesman for Nvidia. Both AMD's and Nvidia's upcoming GPUs are slated to use a new 28nm process technology, with the likely possibility of brand new Radeon graphics cards making it into the market before the end of the year.

Remember Nvidia's quad-core Kal-El chip, also known as the Tegra 3? The one expected to roll out in August, you might wonder. That exact one is now pushed to make its official debut in October, while on smartphones it will arrive only in early-2012, just after the Holiday shopping season and around CES time in early January.
“Project Kal-El-powered tablets are coming this Fall, and phones around the CES 2012 timeframe,” NVIDIA confirmed for Androidandme.

NVIDIA Bestows CUDA Center of Excellence Title on Stanford University

Today NVIDIA let it be known that they’ve named Stanford University a CUDA Center of Excellence for their work in parallel computing research using NVIDIA GPUs and NVIDIA CUDA technology. NVIDIA’s CUDA is their parallel computing architecture which, it should be noted, enables radical increases in computing performance, all with the harnessed power of graphics processors. Stanford is one of more than 450 universities and institutions that teach the CUDA programming model within their curriculum and is now one of only 11 institutions already in the CUDA Centers of Excellence program.

NVIDIA today released its latest version of the GeForce software suite, version 275.50 BETA. With this release, NVIDIA enables SLI support on AMD socket AM3+ platform. The driver enables SLI multi-GPU technology certified AMD 990FX, AMD 990X, and AMD 970 motherboards. Keep in mind, not every AMD 9-series chipset-based motherboard will run SLI, only certified ones, just like not every Intel 5-series and 6-series chipset based motherboard features SLI. Look for the SLI logo when buying the motherboard.
