Apple is trying to outmaneuver Nokia, RIM, Motorola and others, and introduce its own design for the next generation of SIM cards. It is signing up subsidiaries with voting rights to overturn Nokia's majority in the crucial period before the ETSI board votes in favor of a nano-SIM standard. The rest of the industry was hesitant that Apple will try and impose licencing fees on its mechanism, but Cupertino offered it all for free.
Apple's tray-loading proposal basically strips the plastic from the current micro-SIM cards that are in the iPhone 4/4S, but Nokia is concerned that the remaining part has the same length as the width of the current slots, so users might try and jam the cards sideway...

According to a recent job posting, Research In Motion may be looking to enter the iOS app market. The posting, which was spotted by AllThingsD, has since been removed, but a screen grab indicates that the company is seeking a Senior iOS Mobile Developer to build enterprise applications. Emoticons are the little smiley’s and other combinations of characters that people use online in text messages to indicate emotion. They’re sort of like online equivalent of a smirk to let people know you’re kidding or being sarcastic when you say something that could be construed as mean. It's hard to say that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been a success by any standard, but it seems that RIM may think that has more to do with the fact that there has only been a WiFi version so far, rather than any problems with the lack of functionality in the original software. Still, the PlayBook 2.0 software fixed most of the issues we had with the software.

Netflix denies BlackBerry devices, sticks with PS Vita

This week the folks at Netflix have made it clear that they have no current plans to release a Netflix app to BlackBerry. At the same time, the brand new portable gaming system known as the PS Vita, aka PlayStation Vita, has received a 1.0 version of the application in the PlayStation Store. This set of moves makes it clear which groups Netflix, a giant in the streaming video business today, has faith in for the near and extended future, and spells bad news for RIM whose struggling mobile platform BlackBerry is at its worst sales point in several years.

WordPress Releases BlackBerry PlayBook App

Maintaining a WordPress blog on the go just got easier for those who own a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
That's because the official WordPress for PlayBook app was released on Tuesday in the BlackBerry App World. With the app, WordPress bloggers can write posts, upload photos and videos, edit pages, and manage comments. Both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (2.9.2 or higher) sites are supported.
"The 7-inch screen on the PlayBook makes an excellent home for the all-new Dashboard [user interface], giving you quick access to everything in your WordPress install," Danilo Ercoli, mobile wrangler at Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and the new app, wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

RIM registers 6600 developers in 11 days with free BlackBerry PlayBook promotion

RIM has recently extended a promotion that gave away a free BlackBerry PlayBook to anyone who submitted a "viable" app to BlackBerry App World. The promotion was to expire on Monday but RIM's Head of Developer Relations Alec Saunders has extended the deadline for the free PlayBook to March as developers have been signing up with the Canadian based manufacturer.
Saunders sent out a tweet on Tuesday proudly announcing that RIM had signed up 6600 developers in the previous 11 days. Developers have told Berry Review that it has been taking longer than usual to register as a developer, but RIM is supposed to have everything working fine now. BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 to be released on February 21st

When Research In Motion released its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, the device had its fair share of problems. RIM promised an operating system update that would address these problems but the launch was delayed by several months. A new report from N4BB claims the official release of the PlayBook 2.0 update is set for February 21st, just over a week later than the company initially planned. The PlayBook OS 2.0 update will include native email, calendar and contacts apps, but unfortunately native BBM will remain absent from the tablet and can only be accessed through BlackBerry Bridge.

BlackBerry 10 screens leak showing off the new UI

We still have a relatively long time to wait before the new BlackBerry 10 devices hit the market, but that doesn't mean we can't have a treat of some leaked images of the new OS right now. The images come from CrackBerry which received a document leaked from an external ad agency partner of RIM's. The document apparently is an overview of BlackBerry 10 with suggestions on how to create marketing campaigns, and of course the images.

RIM extends free PlayBook offer for Android developers

Earlier this month, Research in Motion began to offer free BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to any Android developers that repackaged their apps for App World. Due to overwhelming interest, the Monday deadline for registration has been extended to February 15th and all developers will have until March 2nd to submit their apps. As of last Friday, there had been more than 1,500 app submissions and over 6,600 new developers registered in the BlackBerry App World according to RIM. According to a post on its blog late Monday, the company is “working around the clock to approve vendor registrations and app submissions.”

Avid BlackBerry fans out there have probably been keeping their eyes on rumors surrounding the potential upcoming London device and BlackBerry 10. We’ve previously reported that this release is expected to occur sometime in September 2012.
CrackBerry has gotten their hands on a presentation slide that references ‘London’ with a list of features and most interestingly, a photo of a device running BlackBerry 10. The most notable aspect of this picture is that the phone depicted is very different looking than the previously leaked photo of the London.

RIM‘s new CEO faces a dual-challenge, Apple in North America and the ascendence of Samsung in Europe, according new research, though BlackBerry is a surprise hold-out in the UK. “Android and Apple together are eating BlackBerry’s lunch” Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said of the smartphone pincer-movement, the NYTimes reports, with global stats indicating 27-percent of smartphone users have an Android device and 24-percent an iPhone. BlackBerry slots in-between, at 26-percent, but enterprise users are progressively looking elsewhere from previous business darlings RIM.

While Microsoft and Research In Motion are competing for the hearts and minds of smartphone users, that won’t stop the two companies from teaming up to help business users get their software on the go.
