BlackBerry PlayBook price slashing begins: $249 and up for Rogers workers
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie revealed on the company’s second-quarter earnings call that RIM would soon be dropping prices on its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets. While the new price points have not yet been disclosed, it looks like the first move in carriers’ efforts to clear their shelves actually started this past Tuesday. Long-time RIM comrade Rogers has launched an internal sale on each of RIM’s three PlayBook models, and company employees are now able to purchase the slate at discounts of up to 50% off. Normally $499.99, the 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is now just $249, the 32GB model drops to $349 from $599.99, and the high-end 64GB PlayBook drops to $399 from its normal $6...

RIM's Latest BlackBerrys Can Use NFC to Access Buildings
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion and HID Global today announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and the BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360 will add support for HID's iCLASS digital keys and readers within the near-field communications chip. By including support for HID's digital key readers, users of these BlackBerry devices will be able to use their phone as an identity card, such as those used to access office buildings and other controlled locations. The companies believe businesses and universities will find this feature appealing, as it may allow them to offer alternatives to key cards for entering buildings. The companies are piloting the technology now, and it should be available in the Curve and Bold l...

RIM reports Q2 earnings: Revenue and EPS both miss; phone and PlayBook shipments decline
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion on Thursday reported its earnings results for the fiscal second quarter. Revenue and EPS both missed estimates; the vendor reported revenue of $4.17 billion and earnings of $0.80 per share. RIM had previously forecast revenue of between $4.2 billion and $4.5 billion and earnings of between $0.75 and $1.05 per share for its August quarter, and Wall Street expected second-quarter revenue of $4.47 billion and EPS of $0.88. Net income in the second quarter totalled $329 million. RIM also had projected handset shipments to reach between 11 and 12.5 million units, but missed there as well — the company shipped only 10.6 million BlackBerry phones in its August quarter. RIM still ...

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPRIM BlackBerryPlayBookTouchPad
As Research In Motion prepares to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday after the market closes, the future of the company and its next-generation products again takes center stage. While estimates for RIM’s second and third quarters are expected by some analysts to beat Wall Street’s consensus, performance of the vendor’s just-released BlackBerry 7 smartphones obviously doesn’t weigh as heavily on the minds of analysts as RIM’s future products and strategy. QNX and its ability to compete with the likes of Apple and Google will be analysts’ focus for the next several quarters, and unfortunately for RIM, the only QNX device it has launched to date is the BlackBerry PlayBook. R...

RIM and Dolby settle over patent infringements
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
RIM and Dolby Laboratories have settled a lawsuit regarding the use of audio compression technology in its BlackBerry handsets and the PlayBook.
Dolby had originally filed a number of lawsuits against the handset manufacturer, seeking financial damages for use of its technology without a licence.
An agreement has now been put into place which means that the lawsuits have been dropped.
Compress to impress
The agreement means that RIM will now licence the technology from Dolby, something the audio company is more than pleased about.
"We are pleased to welcome RIM into Dolby's family of mobile technology licensees. We believe in and will continue to protect the value of our intellectual propert...

Rumoured luxury BlackBerry 9980 is ugly as sin
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
AHHH! My eyes! Kill it! Kill it with fire! Either a Nokia designer from ten years ago traveled through time and infiltrated RIM to play a cruel joke, or this BlackBerry 9980 is still very much a work in progress. We caught a fuzzy glimpse of this BlackBerry a few weeks ago, with the initial assumption that this was going to be RIM’s first QNX smartphone, but that was quickly corrected by the source, and as we can see here, it’s running good ol’ OS 7. Maybe that software will change once (or if) this monstrosity gets launched, but we’ll see. The source says the keyboard is made of metal, which might actually be a nice change of pace, but everything else about this thing is way, way too block...

RIM may be rushing BlackBerry Colt QNX phone amid weak BlackBerry 7 sales
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion is said to be rushing its first QNX-powered smartphone to market in light of underwhelming BlackBerry 7 devices sales. In a note to investors on Friday, Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek suggested demand for RIM’s new smartphones is not meeting expectations. An earlier report indicated that sales to enterprise customers have been solid thus far, while consumer demand may be lacking. Misek’s checks indicate that sales of BackBerry 7 phones to carriers is “just okay,” while sales of older BlackBerry smartphones continues to decline. The analyst believes follow up orders from carriers will also fall short of expectations, and RIM’s quarterly earnings could take a hit as...

Sprint comes out to announce officially that the BlackBerry Curve 9350 is being delayed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9350
Just yesterday, one of our tipsters managed to pass along a little bit of sad news regarding the Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350. However, today we’re getting the official confirmation that the handset is indeed being delayed.
Announcing the news on their support forums for the BlackBerry Curve 9350, Sprint mentions that the handset isn’t going to be arriving as previously scheduled for today; September 9. Rather, it seems that they’re blaming its delay on “unexpected circumstances” that will now see its release date be pushed back to an October time frame. Unfortunately, no concrete date was given this time around for its eventual release.
Even though it’s a going to be a bummer for some custo...

Shareholder calls for RIM to sell itself or its patents, in critical open letter -- Engadget
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Things just keep getting bleaker for RIM. With its revenues stagnating and smartphone market share dwindling, the BlackBerry maker is now facing new financial pressure from Jaguar Financial Group -- a Canadian merchant bank and RIM shareholder that's calling upon the company to do one of two rather unpleasant things: sell itself, or sell its patent portfolio. In an open letter to RIM's board of directors, Jaguar CEO Vic Alboni criticized the manufacturer for failing to "inspire consumer enthusiasm" for its products, and for bringing its devices to market too late. And, as share prices continue to drop, Alboni thinks it's time to make a change:
The status quo is not acceptable, the company ca...

Verizon to launch BlackBerry Torch 9850 on September 8th for $199.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryVerizon WirelessTorch 9850
Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it will offer the BlackBerry Torch 9850 on September 8th for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. The Torch 9850 offers a full 3.7-inch touchscreen display with an 800 x 480-pixel resolution, a 1.2GHz processor, support for global roaming in more than 200 countries, a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video and 16GB of storage. The Torch 9850 was first unveiled during a RIM event in Toronto on August 3rd where we published hands-on impressions of the phone. It is the best full-touchscreen smartphone RIM has sold and its browser is much improved, but the BlackBerry 7 operating still feels stale in comparison to Android, Windows Phone a...

Best Buy cuts up to $150 off BlackBerry PlayBook
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Best Buy has kicked off a promotion for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that slashes the price by as much as $150. The deal isn’t quite as dramatic as the HP TouchPad fire sale of course, but it’s still decent for those that have been considering the PlayBook, especially the 64GB model.
The sale offers a $50 discount on the 16GB and 32GB PlayBook models bringing the prices down to $449.99 and $549.99, respectively. The $150 discount goes towards the 64GB model, which oddly brings the price down in line with the 32GB model at $549.99. That’s a sign that they’re way overstocked on the 64GB model, because seriously who would pay the same amount for the smaller storage capacity?

Openwave sues Apple and RIM for patent infringement
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleRIM BlackBerry
Add one more to the tally of patent lawsuits involving Apple and RIM. This time it's Openwave Systems using the license-by-litigation technique, and it's alleging that multiple devices infringe five of its patents on mobile internet -- including offline email access, cloud computing, and secure server access. The company claims that Apple's iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4, the iPod Touch, both iPads, plus RIM's Blackberry Curve 9930 and the PlayBook all infringe its IP. Apparently, Openwave initially took the pacifist route to persuade Cupertino and Waterloo to pay up, but when its overtures were ignored, it decided upon more aggressive tactics. As others before it, Openwave wants to fight a two front ...

BlackBerry Bold 9900 now available at T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryBold 9900
RIM’s latest batch of BlackBerry smartphones have been gradually working their way out to various carriers over the last few weeks, and now there’s yet another notch to scratch. T-Mobile now has the BlackBerry Bold 9900 on sale for $299.99 on a two-year contract, as expected. That pricetag is a little on the high side, but up here in Canada, Bell has already slashed the price to $100 on a three-year contract, so expect a few cuts in the near future.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is spearheading RIM’s latest efforts, offering a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a 640 x 480 resolution, 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording. The operating system is more or less...
