Microsoft confirms Media Center will be in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Windows Media Center fans can finally breathe again. After seemingly endless will they / won't they speculation Steven Sinofsky, the President of the Windows Division has confirmed in a blog post that Media Center will return for yet another go 'round in Windows 8. There's no word on any possible changes, only that the company has "work to do" concerning the quality and compatibility of add-ins. Wondering why it hasn't been in some pre-release builds? Between the potential for multiple SKUs (no details until closer to release, but it seems like you'll be looking for an Ultimate pack or something similar again to get everything) and simple engineering decisions as features are added and remov...

Microsoft Makes Complete 180 On Xbox 3D
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
The latest rumor is that Microsoft will be integrating 3D features to the Xbox 360 in a firmware update. And it could be happening really soon.
If true, this would be a complete reversal from last year when Microsoft said 3D was too niche and it had absolutely no interest in encouraging developers to make engaging 3D content for the 360.
Microsoft faced a bit of pressure to jump on the 3D bandwagon after Sony made such a big deal of 3D on PS3 last year. Sony still thinks it's an important strategy and one that will keep it ahead in the always competitive console wars.

HTC rep claims Mango update coming in September
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7.5
The most frequent question we get these days is when the Mango update will be pushed out by Microsoft.
We Love Windows Phone .HK have posted this excerpt from a conversation with a HTC customer service rep posted by WPXAP, a Chinese Windows Phone Forum, which goes some way to answering that question.
In the conversation the rep claims, based on internal emails, that HTC has completed the OEM customization of Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and that this is just awaiting Microsoft certification before being pushed out.
The rep claims the update will definitely be arriving in September, but could however not pin it down even more closely.
Of course for most people the day the update arrives depends.....

More Windows Phone showing up in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Some recently leaked screen shots of Windows 8 show an ever stronger influence of Windows Phone 7.
The above shot (via Winrumors) over the shoulder of one of their presenters shows a tile-like start menu on the “immersive” UI that appears much more closer to the Windows Phone 7 version, with multiple tiles tightly grouped together. Previous versions from earlier this year showed many fewer tiles spaced further apart.
This shot above (from this Microsoft video) from the “Classic” UI still shows a metro-fied menu and date and time widget, indicating in Windows 8 you will never be far from the Windows Phone 7 look, even if you spend most of your time in the “Classic” UI.
Irrespective of how W...

Microsoft plans to bring back "Find on Page" feature in IE9, but it might come much later
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
For any Windows Phone 7 user out there, it might not be something used on a consistent basis, but the “Find on Page” feature with IE8 is nevertheless something handy to have on. However, it seems that Microsoft decided to remove this feature entirely with IE9 in Windows Phone Mango.
Fortunately, Microsoft has heard the complaints from numerous people and plans to bring back the feature sometime down the road. Well, the good news is that IE9 is capable of being upgraded independently of the operating system – meaning, it can potentially be brought back with some sort of update. However, it’s also possible that they will simply hold off from doing that, and instead, bring it back with the arri...

Microsoft tops 30,000 apps for Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft's Windows Phone platform may not be the near the top when it comes to market share, but it is getting there when it comes to the number of apps available in its Windows Phone Marketplace.
The latest numbers from the Windows Phone AppList, a website that catalogs the number of app in the Marketplace, show there to be just over 30,000 apps available. Microsoft reached this number a mere 10 months since the Marketplace debuted. Additionally, there are now over 8,000 registered developers for the Windows Phone platform.
While these numbers pale in comparison to the hundreds of thousands of apps available for Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms, when compared with other smartphon...

Microsoft details new Windows 8 File Explorer UI
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft today revealed details on its revamped Windows 8 Explorer interface design. The file manager update focuses on delivering a more streamlined user experience through a ribbon UI that spans across the top of the Windows Explorer interface. It doesn’t look drastically different and retains much of the heritage Windows features while optimizing them for a better user experience.
Microsoft program manager Alex Simon posted the details on the Building Windows 8 blog. Simon noted that out of 200 commands in Explorer, they found that the top 10 commands made up 81.8 percent of usage. To make these most used commands most accessible, Simon says that the ribbon UI would be best to achieve an...

Forbes: Microsoft benefits most from demise of WebOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftHP
Forbes magazine have a piece up on HP’s recent canning of WebOS, and are spelling out what we in the community already suspect – that Microsoft and WP7 are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries of WebOS’s demise.
In light of Google’s recent Motorola deal and Apple’s unwillingness to license its iOS to third parties, we believe that Microsoft will be one of the primary beneficiaries of the death of webOS. We currently have a $28 Trefis price estimate for Microsoft, which implies a 10% upside to the current market price.

Microsoft gesture patents reveal possible dual-screen tablet focus
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMicrosoft
Earlier this year, we heard a slew of whispers promising a late winter launch for Microsoft's Windows 8 tablets -- there was even mention of a tab-specific OS. While it's become clear that Redmond intends for its new operating system to run on multiple devices, insight into its tablet plans are still somewhat shrouded in mystery. From the looks of these gesture patents, however, it's clear MS has been eyeing a dual-screen tablet future (hello Courier).

I don’t know how many of you have used Live Mesh from Microsoft which was discontinued last year. Its an awesome service started with great vision from former executive of Microsoft Mr. Ray Ozzie.
