Fears of Windows tablet manufacturer apathy spurred Microsoft’s Surface development, despite insistence that the slates are intended to support not compete with OEM efforts, according the latest batch of rumors. Observations of the extent to which Apple will go to secure the materials necessary to develop distinctive and unique products – and concerns that its own Windows OEMs were playing device strategy too safely – prompted Microsoft taking Surface into its own hands, a former executive told the NYT, burned too by the ill-fated HP Slate 500 project.

Rumors and speculation have been flying since Microsoft announced last week that it was hosting a press conference in Los Angeles on Monday, and that might be exactly what the Redmond-based company was hoping for. Early well-sourced reports indicated that a Microsoft-branded tablet is on tap for the event, and a number of subsequent reports have said much of the same. Microsoft announced Surface, a line of Windows 8 tablets tonight at the “big event” everyone’s been talking about. The two models are similar to the company’s strategy for different versions of Windows — there’s a Windows RT-based tablet for mainstream consumers and a professional tablet for users with higher-end needs.
Both tablets feature a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display. They’re designed with what Microsoft is calling VaporMg, a “combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch.” They also have built-in kickstands and a Touch Cover that folds out to expose a keyboard. ASUS video hints of a possible dual booting Windows/Android tablet

A few days ago, ASUS released a video that teased an upcoming tablet that seems to be an addition to its Transformer line. The Transformer tablets can dock into a QWERTY keyboard and the video invited the viewer to join ASUS as it announces "the truly incredible next transformations". The manufacturer's next video was released on Thursday in advance of an announcement set for June 4th at Computex. Considering the message of the new video, that announcement could be very interesting indeed.

80-inch Windows 8 tablet already exists - in Microsoft CEO's office

An 80-inch touchscreen Windows 8 tablet already hangs on the wall of Microsoft CEO’s Steve Ballmer - and it could soon be made available to the public.
This is according to Frank Shaw, Microsoft vice-president, who said of Ballmer’s giant tablet added: “He’s got rid of his phone, he’s got rid of his notepaper. It’s [the tablet)] his whiteboard, his email machine, and it’s a device we’re going to sell.”
Interestingly the current version of the device - the one that hangs on Ballmer’s wall - runs on Windows 8 it but is actually made by a different manufacturer.

While Dell has previously promised a Windows 8 enterprise tablet "on the exact day" the new operating system debuts, we haven't heard any firm plans for its consumer offerings. Neowin has posted two separate images of what it claims are Dell's two Windows 8 tablets. The XPS 12 is said to be a convertible 12.5-inch tablet (similar to the company's Inspiron Duo) with an edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass display, due in late 2012.

Microsoft might deny its existence, but a second reliable source claims to have seen Office running on the iPad.
There are plenty of great apps already on the App Store and Google Play store for opening and editing Microsoft Office files, but tablet owners may soon have the best option of all: The real McCoy.
Rumors circulated a few months back about the existence of Microsoft Office for iOS after The Daily reported on a source who claimed to have seen the elusive app in action.

It hasn't been much of an ARM wrestle in the tablet space up to this point, and it's not because AMD and Intel haven't talked the talk. For the most part, they just haven't walked the walk, which has allowed ARM to dominate the category. Apple spawned the media tablet market with the launch of the original iPad a couple of years back. Two iPad updates and countless Android tablets later, its viselike grip over the tablet market remains intact.
