HTC Desire Android 2.3 update enters testing phase

HTC has announced that its long-awaited Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire has entered internal testing.
The update will provide the HTC Desire with a slightly stripped-down version of the software, with some apps having to be abandoned to free up memory required by the Gingerbread update.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for Desire owners; HTC had originally promised the update, then decided it couldn't deliver it and then changed its mind again a day later, saying that it would be bringing the update out after all.

Google+ Stumbles Early with Privacy Loophole

Well, this didn't take long: Google's mayonnaise on toast clone of Facebook is already catching heat for privacy problems. Nothing as egregious as Buzzgate, but Google+ seems to be allowing unfettered sharing of your stuff with anyone. Not good!
Google+ has Circles, a sorta-neat, simplified "Groups" system, wherein you have to explicitly sort your buddies into various social spheres. Then, whatever you share from your account has to be explicitly beamed to one or more of these Circles. So that way, nobody can see your pithy thoughts or photos beyond those you want. Right? Not quite.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab seems like it has been left in the dust by its sexier Android tablet counterparts – the Motorola Xoom and its successor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9. The latter tablets are sporting Honeycomb, a version of Android meant for large screens, while the more portable Galaxy Tab with its 7-inch display is still rocking Froyo.

Opera launches updated versions of its two mobile browsers for Android

Opera has upgraded both of its mobile browsers for Android flavored devices. Opera Mini 6.1 and Opera Mobile 11.1 are both available now on the Android Market. Both have had support for Google voice search added along with Google AutoComplete and Intelligent domain suggest. Not only will these new features help speed things up when it comes to entering a URL, they will also give you alternative sites to check out.

Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android

Velocity Micro on Wednesday was the second in as many days to be pushed into signing a patent deal with Microsoft over Android. The deal will see royalties paid on every Cruz tablet sold. Company chief Randy Copeland spun the loss by arguing that it would help lead to "exciting new Cruz tablets" later on.
The deal immediately follows one with General Dynamics and shows Microsoft now turning most of its attention to smaller Android device makers located inside the US. Most of its early focus on royalty collection was on larger phone designers like HTC.

Motorola DEFY on T-Mobile UK finally getting Android 2.2 Froyo

Most owners of the Motorola DEFY in the UK have probably already received the update to Android 2.2 Froyo that was released a few weeks back, but those who happen to have bought their DEFY through T-Mobile have been left in the lurch. They shouldn't be upset for too much longer, though, as T-Mobile has announced that users can expect the update to roll out at the beginning of July. Android 2.2 Froyo brings a number of improvements, including faster performance and the ability to move apps to the SD card. T-Mobile users will probably be happy to get the latest and greatest from April 2010, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a 2.3 Gingerbread update for the DEFY.

Microsoft collects licensing fees from two small Android manufacturers

Two small Android OEMs, Velocity Micro and General Dynamics, each cut a check payable to the order of Microsoft to take care of licensing fees that allow the pair to use the Android OS. Even though Android is considered Google's baby-and rightly so-the gang at Redmond still have some patents involved in the software which the company feels it should be paid for to license to users. The amount of the payments to Microsoft has not been disclosed.
While Velocity Micro and General Dynamics are two small minnows in a sea of sharks, getting the two smaller manufacturer's to pay allows Microsoft to say that a precedent has been set and that since the smaller companies have paid to license Microsoft...

Google has unveiled their new social layer today, and it is called Google+. The trouble is that it is only open to a select few invitees, and those of us who have been invited are not yet allowed to write about the product in detail. The app includes the basic features of the service including Circles (how you choose who you share things with), Stream (shared items), Instant Upload and Huddle. French search company 1PlusV sues Google for $421 million

1PlusV, a French search company, has filed a lawsuit against Google asking for 295 million euros ($421 million). “Between 2007 and 2010, no less than 30 vertical search engines created by 1plusV were black-listed, some of which showed significant business potential,” the company said in its lawsuit. According to Reuters, 1PlusV plans to file the official complaint on Tuesday or Wednesday with the Paris commercial court. Google has been taking a lot of legal heat recently. Orange UK and HTC have started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Desire HD. If you’re in the “affected” group you can already check to see whether a new update is available. If it isn’t – don’t worry. I’m sure HTC’s servers are dying at the moment as the company tries to push the software to all users.
