Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleVerizon WirelessiPhone 4s
Verizon is expected to be the carrier that reaps the most benefits out of the iPhone 4S stateside. A leaked memo by JP Morgan hints that Verizon Wireless will increase its subscriber count by 1.2 million in the fourth quarter, largely due to the iPhone 4S being available on the carrier since day 1 of its launch. AT&T, the carrier the iPhone originally launched on, is projected to only add 450,000 new subscribers, while Sprint is expected to boost its subscriber base by 250,000 in Q4 2011.
T-Mobile, in contrast, is the only one of the four major US carriers that doesn’t have the iPhone and the forecast is for its subscribers to decrease by 400,000.

Xbox TV puts Microsoft ahead of Apple and Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftAppleXBOX 360
Gaming has long been Microsoft’s wildcard: while the company struggles to find its feet with Windows Phone, and faces a difficult tablet market when its Windows 8 slates finally appear, the Xbox 360 continues to sell strongly. Now Xbox TV has arrived to not only reassure 360-owning gamers that they made the right console choice, but broaden the 360′s appeal to a whole new segment. It’s not entirely fashionable to praise Microsoft, especially when it’s over something that, buried in the company’s history books, they’ve tried and failed at before. Smart TV has suffered the usual ignominies and from the usual flaws: sluggish hardware, confusing interface, dawdling internet connections. Now, wit...

Samsung puts $200 million aside for patent spats with Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung on Monday said that his company is ramping up its defense against Apple in 2012. Speaking to The Korea Times, Samsung’s chief executive confirmed the creation of a $200 million war chest that the South Korea-based vendor will use to fight Apple’s patent-related advances moving forward. Apple has of course launched attacks against Samsung in a number of regions across the world, alleging that Samsung tablets and smartphones copy its designs and infringe on various Apple-owned patents. Samsung recently scored a small victory in the United States when a federal judge refused to ban sales of Samsung’s Galaxy devices. ”If we win in Paris as well, that’s truly a big blow ...

Google+ updated for iOS with shiny new logo
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleiOS 4iOS 5
The Google+ app has been updated for iOS users, and the new version adds a couple of nice features, but ignores some of the known issues with the app. The update brings the Google+ app on iOS to version 1.0.7.2940, which doesn't really tell you anything.
The nice additions to the app are the ability to upload full resolution pictures from your device, and also a search option. We could make quips about Google taking its sweet time in adding search to Google+, but it seems like a played out thought at this point. Either way, users on iOS can now search for topics, users and keywords on G+ right from the iOS app. One downside with the full res pictures is that you will be able to upload them,...

Apple’s US Samsung sales ban demands refused
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple‘s attempts to have Samsung’s smartphones and tablets banned from sale in the US have been rejected in the US courts, with a ruling late on Friday throwing out the possibility of a preliminary injunction. ”It is not clear that an injunction on Samsung’s accused devices would prevent Apple from being irreparably harmed” US District Judge Lucy Koh concluded in the San Jose court, Reuters reports, arguing that Apple had not sufficiently demonstrated that its design patents would not be overturned in the eventual trial.

Apple made to specify design alternatives for Samsung
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a worldwide legal battle for months regarding the South Korean manufacturer’s smartphones and tablets infringing on the Cupertino company’s designs and patents. Documents have surfaced today revealing that in seeking to ban Samsung’s devices, Apple had to provide design workarounds to clarify exactly what sorts of designs would not be considered infringing. The list of alternatives is quite humorous.

Apple's request to block Samsung Galaxy tablet, phone sales in the US is denied
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungApple
As the legal drama between Apple and Samsung drags on around the world, US District Court Judge has rejected Apple's request to block the sales of Galaxy devices. Reuters reports the ruling came out late Friday, with the judge deciding "It is not clear that an injunction on Samsung's accused devices would prevent Apple from being irreparably harmed,". This isn't the first rejection for the folks from Cupertino either, after a request to speed up the trial was also denied back in July. The case itself will of course go on, but this means you'll still be able to get your hands on those Galaxy Tabs, Galaxy S IIs, and the like in the meantime.
Update: While Apple has yet to comment on the ruling...

Apple: We Don’t Use Carrier IQ… In Most Of Our Products… Anymore
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesApple
The tech world is up in arms this week about Carrier IQ, the mobile data logging software that comes pre-installed (and rather well hidden) on an increasingly huge number of handsets. It’s still entirely unclear as to what’s being logged and, more importantly, what (if anything) is being sent off the handset — but one thing’s for sure: people don’t like it.
As the controversy swells, companies are rushing to distance themselves from the matter. The latest ones looking to get on the right side of the air gap? Apple.

Apple seeks to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGALAXY Tab 10.1
Samsung’s tweaks to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 weren’t enough to satisfy Apple’s legal team. Apple successfully banned Samsung’s German subsidiaries from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 after it accused the South Korea-based company of patent infringement. Samsung responded by releasing a modified Galaxy Tab 10.1N tablet it believed had addressed all of Apple’s concerns. Unfortunately, Apple isn’t satisfied with the changes and it wants to ban Samsung from selling the new tablet as well. A hearing for Apple’s request for an injunction is scheduled for December 22nd, Dow Jones Newswires said. The two companies have been locked in patent-related legal battles around the globe and currently have ...

DisplaySearch: iPad 3 in Q1 to start tablet resolution surge
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
The iPad 3 display should help kick off a dramatic improvement in the quality of tablet displays early next year, DisplaySearch said. Based on its own shipment forecast data, it expected the typical pixels per inch (PPI) of a tablet to jump from 147 at the end of 2011 to 191 in early 2012. It understood that two tablet screens shipping in the fall would be instrumental to the spike, including a 1920x1200 10-inch display showing in the Iconia Tab A700 and the 9.7-inch, 2048x1536 screen that could only be destined for Apple's new tablet.
More companies are expected to come onboard slightly later and push the PPI to 203 during the spring, researchers said. By the summer, that number would grow ...

Microsoft rumored to be working on Office for iPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMicrosoftAppleiPadiPad 2
The folks over at The Daily claim to have obtained information that Microsoft is planning on releasing a version of Office for the iPad. With Office being Microsoft’s second biggest seller, second only to Windows, and the iPad accounting for over 80 percent of the tablet market, it appears that an Office for iPad app would be a powerhouse release for Microsoft.
Since Apple has already established a $10 price point for its productivity iPad apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, The Daily is speculating that Microsoft will release around the same $10 mark in order to be competitive.
Microsoft is also working on the next edition of Office that will be fully compatible with OS X Lion as wel...

Ban on Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 reversed by Australian Court, Apple to appeal
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGALAXY Tab 10.1
Last month, Apple won a preliminary injunction from an Australian court which in effect banned Samsung from selling its flagship tablet, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, in the country. Apple had alleged that the Korean based manufacturer infringed upon its patents and the court initially agreed. Hoping to somehow salvage the holiday season, Samsung quickly appealed the ruling with the company's lawyer Neil Young (who does not have a "Heart of Gold") saying that the tablet was dead if it could not be offered for the holiday season.
As we reported last week, the Australian appeals court seemed to agree with Samsung's position that banning the tablet from being sold in the country was too harsh of...

Next Apple TV Codename appears: J33
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
A new codename was spotted in the iOS firmware assigned to the next generation Apple TV. The Apple TV box has the codename J33, which indicates that it is closer to getting ready. 9to5Mac has published the firmware entries found for J33 from a tipster. Until now we only saw references of Apple TV 3,1. A codename like J33 suggests that Apple is getting closer to release the new Apple TV. I do not expect that though this year.
On the other hand a Sprint release for a device like the Apple TV is also not ideal. What will be new for the new Apple TV? Nobody knows, but it is time to get apps on the Apple TV to go against Smart TVs

Apple Store app tells employees when you arrive at a store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple Stores have taken off from just a couple of stores to a global retail network, a place where creatives (and baristas) hang out in an Apple-incensed atmosphere. An Apple Store stands out with the Genius Bar offering personal assistance, but the newest addition to the retail experience is possibly even more interesting. A new system allows employees to track users who have already made a purchase via the free Apple Store application in the store. This is aimed at speeding up shopping, but could it be a bit too much for those who value their security and privacy?
To answer that, one would first need to understand the way the system functions. Basically, Apple Store employees have an iPod ...
