Apple betting heavily on flash RAM

Apple betting heavily on flash RAM

Apple doesn’t make many acquisitions, so when they buy a company it’s worth taking a closer look to get a peek at where Apple is headed. Last week we reported that Apple bought Anobit, maker of a unique type of flash Ram.
For those of you who don’t keep up with the different types of RAM, flash RAM is able to act as permanent storage - think of it as a hard-drive without moving parts - because it stores information even when the device is powered down. DRAM, the type you buy in sticks to upgrade your PC with, can only store information when the device is actively powering the RAM. This makes DRAM very fast at getting information into and out of its temporary storage as the CPU needs it, but ...

Intel creates new business unit focused on mobile, Apple VP to lead it

Believe it or not, between 2002 and 2006 Intel made processors for mobile phones that used ARM’s architecture. The division responsible for all that amazing work was known as XScale. Intel sold XScale to Marvell during the summer of 2006, one year before Apple released the iPhone and redefined what a mobile phone was capable of. I bet Intel’s kicking themselves in the ass over that. Anyway, since then Intel has been trying to get someone, anyone, to build a smartphone that uses their x86 chips. In layman’s terms: they want a company like HTC or Samsung to build a mobile phone that uses the same kind of processor that’s inside a laptop computer. Intel has obviously failed to convince anyone t...

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last time we saw iOS 5.1 beta, it was pointing towards new Apple devices on the horizon and adding some new hooks into Siri for developers. iOS 5.1 beta 2 has been seeded to developers, and while it doesn't bring a lot new to the table, it does add a nice new feature for those of you who like to take lots of pictures.
The new feature in this version pertains to Photo Stream and one of the more annoying things with it. Photo Stream is part of iCloud and automatically keeps the last 1000 pictures you took. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any way to delete a single picture from your stream. Instead, you'd have to either kill the stream and start over, or leave the offending picture out for any...

iPad 3 to land in 3-4 months tips sources

The rumors about the next-generation iPad are coming quickly. Another source is claiming that the new iPad 3 will land in the next 3-4 months. We heard a very similar rumor early in December that the iPad 3 was due to launch in February. That is a bit sooner than the latest rumor claims. According to the latest rumor, the makers of components for the iPad 3 have started to ship the parts to OEM contractors for assembly.
At the same time, the production and shipment of parts for the current generation tablets have been reduced according to the sources. Production of the iPad 2 is continuing at a brisk pace with 14-15 million units of the iPad 2 expected to be produced in Q4. The production wi...

iPhone 4S gets Chinese network permit as Android widens lead

iPhone 4S gets Chinese network permit as Android widens lead

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Chinese iPhone 4S buyers received good news Saturday after it was confirmed that Apple's device had received a Network Access Permit from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier in the week. The clearance will give the HSPA version of the phone approval to run on China Unicom's network. Its version is identical to that available elsewhere save for its support of the China-specific WAPI standard in place of the usual Wi-Fi.
In a conversation with Sohu, China Unicom added that it hoped to have the iPhone 4S on sale before the end of 2011, even with just under three weeks left in the year. It anticipates a 16GB version costing 4,999 yuan off-contract, or a steep $789.

Microsoft might withdraw from CES, to focus on self-run events like Apple

Apple’s success is evident recently, but unlike most other phone and PC makers, Cupertino is not participating in any of the major electronics shows like CES, MWC and CTIA. Now, we don’t consider this as good practice but the company has definitely built a name for itself and its zealous army of followers, so it has the attention and can afford this. Now, it seems its biggest PC rival Microsoft has decided to start following that example. At least, that’s what Mary Jo Foley of the Windows Weekly podcast got as an inside scoop.
Her source claims that 2012 will be the last year when Microsoft will have a big presence at CES with the traditional keynote served to the public by CEO Steve Ballmer...

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Love to jailbreak but hate to tether every time you reboot? Then help could soon be at hand courtesy of hacker Pod2g. He just put out a video showing off a new exploit that continues to work on an iPod Touch even after it has been switched off and on. It appears to be running on iOS 5.0 rather than 5.0.1, so some downgrading might be called for. We don't know when it'll be released to the masses, or how long it'll last once Apple catches wind, but in the meantime there are of course various alternatives if you can stomach the risks and don't mind a bit of USB tomfoolery.

Apple slashes prices on refurbished iPad 2s, now starting from $419

Now that Black Friday is long over, you might feel sorry you didn’t get any of those discounted iOS devices on November 25th. Don’t worry too much - if you’re okay with using a refurbished iPad, now seems to be a good time for it. Apple has just slashed prices on its latest tablet by $80 to the pretty affordable $419 for the basic 16GB Wi-Fi-only version. Both the black and the white versions get the discount, and when bundled with the free shipping, that’s a truly temptive offer.
iPad 2s with more memory - the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi-only versions - also got their prices slashed to $499 and $599 respectively.

Samsung loses bid to block iPhone 4S sales in France

Samsung loses bid to block iPhone 4S sales in France

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

A French court on Thursday decided against issuing an injunction that would have barred Apple from selling the iPhone 4S in France, Bloomberg reports. The decision was part of a patent infringement complaint recently filed against Apple by Samsung, but Judge Marie-Christine Courboulay denied Samsung’s request. “The disproportionate character of the ban sought by Samsung against Apple is clear,” Judge Courboulay said in today’s decision, ruling that Samsung must pay Apple €100,000 for legal fees. The claim will move forward to be tried as a standard patent suit. Samsung filed a suit in October seeking to block sales of Apple’s iPhones in France and Italy, alleging that Apple’s smartphones inf...

US Justice Department also investigating Apple and others for ebook price fixing

US Justice Department also investigating Apple and others for ebook price fixing

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Ebook ReadersApple

We heard just yesterday that the European Commission was investigating possible ebook price fixing by Apple and five major book publishers, and now the US Department of Justice has confirmed that it's investigating the situation. (To be clear, the news is the confirmation, not the investigation — that's been rumored since last year.) Like the European investigation, the DOJ is interested in the "agency model" of selling books, whereby the publishers set the final prices and Apple takes a cut; that's in contrast to the wholesale model used by Amazon in which the publishers sell the books to the retailer and Amazon decides the final prices at will. By agreeing to the agency model, Apple gave t...

Apple job listings hint at possible Siri API for third party apps

Apple job listings hint at possible Siri API for third party apps

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

A few job postings from Apple lead to the thought that we can see a Siri API, after all, which will allow its role to expand in iOS and pave the way for third party apps to take advantage of its wit and server algorithms.
The posts says two engineers are needed to work on Siri, and one reads literally: "We are looking for an engineer to join the team that implements the UI for Siri. You will primarily be responsible for implementing the conversation view and its many different actions. This includes defining a system that enables a dialog to appear intuitive, a task that involves many subtle UI behaviors in a dynamic, complex system. You will have several clients of your code, so the ability...

TV-enabled iMac could launch before Apple's Siri HDTV, analyst says

TV-enabled iMac could launch before Apple's Siri HDTV, analyst says

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple may launch an iMac with integrated “TV capability” before it launches its own full-blown HDTV, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair said Wednesday. Blair said Apple’s new iMacs, which could launch during the first half of 2012, will integrate several features that are currently found in the Apple TV set top box and create a “slimmer all-in-one PC with TV capabilities.” Blair doesn’t make any mention of the Siri voice engine, which Apple is expected to use in its HDTV to completely remove any need for a remote control. “Apple could effectively start with what they already have on the manufacturing line and slowly push their offering from 27 inches and scale up from there to 32 inches and ...

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Another day, another question to answer. This time one of our readers asked me whether the iPhone 4S sold by Verizon Wireless is any better than what two other big carriers (AT&T and Sprint) are offering.
The short answer is – NO! You’ll get the best experience with AT&T’s iPhone 4S because it’s the only one that supports simultaneous voice and data. While iPhone 4S sold by Sprint and Verizon Wireless rely on a CDMA network, AT&T’s version connects to a GSM one, which allows this capability [data and voice at the same time]. In real-life this means that you’ll still be getting push notifications from the web even when you’re in the middle of a call.

European Commission to investigate Apple, eBook publishers in antitrust probe

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

The European Commission announced Tuesday that it has opened formal proceedings to investigate whether or not major eBook publishers, possibly “with the help of Apple,” are “engaged in anti-competitive practices affecting the sale of eBooks.” The publishing companies named in the investigation include Hachette Livre, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck. “The Commission will in particular investigate whether these publishing groups and Apple have engaged in illegal agreements or practices that would have the object or the effect of restricting competition in the EU or in the EEA,” the European Commission said in a statement. It is unclear how long ...
