AMD's 8-core desktop chip puts it back in the race with Intel

AMD is looking to get back into the race with Intel with the introduction of its eight-core desktop chip and its new Bulldozer architecture.
The chip manufacturer unveiled Wednesday its FX family of CPUs, which includes the first eight-core desktop processor. These are also the first chips to be released with AMD's Bulldozer architecture.

Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday released the first eight-core desktop chips based on the new Bulldozer architecture, in which cores can run at clock speeds of up to 4.2GHz.
The chips will belong to the re-launched FX series, which are targeted at enthusiasts like gamers. The chips are "unclocked and customizable," AMD said.

AMD invests in BlueStacks for Android apps on Fusion slates

AMD has joined a $5.6m investment round in BlueStacks, the software specialist that enables Android apps to run on x86-based Windows computers. The investment, made with Citrix, will see AMD leverage BlueStacks virtualization with its tablet and notebook/netbook processors; BlueStacks intends to use the extra cash to accelerate development, with a beta and Pro version – capable of running paid Android apps – both expected by the end of 2011.

AMD is suffering from poor Llano yields

AMD send out a profit warning to investors, stating it won't be able to achieve the previously forecasted 8-12 percent rise in quarterly revenue due to Llano manufacturing issues at GlobalFoundries. Third quarter revenue is anticipated to increase four to six percent compared to the second quarter, and the company also reveals that its Interlagos server processor shipped later than originally anticipated.

AMD Ships First 'Bulldozer' Processors

AMD announced revenue shipments of the first processors based on its new x86 "Bulldozer" architecture. Initial production of the world's first 16-core x86 processor, codenamed "Interlagos," began in August and shipping to customers is already underway.
Compatible with existing AMD OpteronTM 6100 Series platforms and infrastructure, "Interlagos" is expected to launch and be available in partner systems in the fourth quarter of this year. Many of the initial shipments have been earmarked for large custom supercomputer installations that are now underway.

AMD sheds more light on Bulldozer processor architecture

AMD has disclosed a number of fresh details surrounding its upcoming Bulldozer processor cores, along with the AM3+ platform. Presentation slides show a Bulldozer die with eight AMD64 cores and 8MB of L2 cache, two 72-bit DDR3 memory channels and four 16-bit receive/16-bit transmit HyerTransport links. The new architecture splits eight cores across four Bulldozer modules, each with two integer cores and a floating point core.

AMD has introduced three new Fusion APUs belonging to the E-series and C-series. The new processors include the E-450, E-300, and C-60, which will replace current models on its respective price points and power output specifications.
As we learned in our review last February, the AMD Fusion platform combines Bobcat cores together with GPU cores to create Accelerated Processing Units (APUs). The Bobcat cores are a significant step ahead of Intel's Atom as they're out-of-order 64-bit cores.

Although AMD hasn't provided an official announcement, Xbit Labs noticed that the company has "quietly" launched its DirectX 11-compatible AMD Radeon HD 6000A series of GPUs designed specifically for All-In-One (AIO) desktops. This new series includes the 800 MHz AMD Radeon HD 6670A, the 800 MHz 6650A, the 650 MHz 6550A and the 625 to 750 MHz 6450A.

AMD just announced availability of its first triple-core Llano APU: the A6-3500. The 3500 features three cores running at 2.1GHz. AMD's Turbo Core is supported so you can see clocks of up to 2.4GHz depending on the workload. The rest of the specs are otherwise identical to the A6-3600. You get 320 Radeon cores running at 443MHz and a 65W TDP.

If there is one spot where information leaks it seems to be donim haber. New slided popped up showing information on AMD's Next-Generation Wichita and Krishna APUs. The new APUs (CPU+GPU) are planned for 2012 and are part of AMDs Deccan low-power solutions.
The products need to be seen and ranged in the same segment as Intel's Atom and VIA's Nano processors. Currently we have the "Zacate" and "Ontario" processors like the E350 filling that job. The future platform will be named "Deccan," and will see two APUs codenamed "Wichita" and "Krishna,".

It looks like that AMD might bundle liquid cooling with special editions of the upcoming FX processors.
A recent report indicated that AMD has been considered when it began considering the option of equipping boxed versions of its FX CPUs with liquid coolers. The Antec Kuhler H2O 620 is given as a possible example of what AMD's customers may encounter in the future alongside enthusiast processors, though neither of the two companies commented on the issue.

AMD is selling Radeon-branded DDR3 memory modules to the consumer market, not just OEMs, which were spotted in stores in Japan. AMD is selling certified DDR3 memory in three segments: Entertainment, UltraPro Gaming, and Enterprise. Sandy Bridge And Fusion Claim 60% of x86 CPU Market

AMD appears to have had a pretty good launch into the GPU-CPU era as it was able to steal x86 processor market share from Intel, according to a new report published by market researchers from IDC.
AMD claimed 1.5 points of share from Intel overall and now stands at 20.4%. In mobile computers, AMD gained 1.8 points to 15.2%, in desktops it added 1.5 points to 28.9%, IDC said. Intel held 79.3% overall and 84.4% in mobile and 70.9% in desktops.
According to IDC, Intel was able to extend its dominance in servers and added 0.6 points to 94.5%, while Intel stood at 5.5%.
The good news for Intel and AMD was the fact that Sandy Bridge and Fusion already account for more than 60% of processor shipmen...

AMD Catalyst 11.7 Drivers Now Available for Download

AMD on Wednesday made available it's Catalyst 11.7 driver package for Radeon graphics card owners, and in doing so, the chip maker fixed a barrel full of issues, many of them related to Windows 7. AMD said the Catalyst 11.7 package addresses any and all quirks with mouse cursor lag, and if you've been experiencing system hangs on specific HDMI and DisplayPort displays using the previous driver package, 11.7 will fix that too.
