AMD Now Shipping 28nm GPUs, Says CEO

On Tuesday during an IT Supply Chain conference, AMD CEO Rory Read confirmed that the company is now shipping its next-generation graphics cores -- which are fabricated using 28-nm process technology at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) fabs -- for revenue. Actual products won't be formally announced until CES 2012 next month, he said.
"We are ramping 28-nm [products] with TSMC in Taiwan and shipping the products here and now," he said. "We are very excited about the products."
AMD's CEO didn't actually detail a specific product, but there's speculation he may be referring to the "Tahiti" GPU, which will be used in the company's upcoming Radeon HD 7970 and HD 7950 solutions...

AMD today released the final installment of its monthly Catalyst Software Suite updates for this year, Catalyst 11.12 WHQL. The software provides device drivers for AMD/ATI Radeon GPUs, AMD Chipset-integrated graphics, AMD Fusion APU-integrated graphics, AMD HDMI audio, and related software such as AMD Catalyst Control Center for discrete Radeon GPUs, and Vision Control Center for integrated ones; and HydraVision.

AMD Shows New A-Series Notebook APUs

Yesterday AMD quietly introduced seven new accelerated A-Series notebook APU's, featuring quad and dual-core designs.
Four out of the seven CPUs introduced by AMD are from the A8 and A6 series which means that they include four processing cores, while the remaining three are A4 chips with dual computing cores.
The fastest of these quad-core models is the A8-3550MX which compared to its predecessor got 100MHz higher base and Turbo Core speeds, making it the first Llano mobile processors to reach the 2GHz frequency (2.7GHz in Turbo mode).
However, the specs of the graphics core were left unaltered and the chip sports the same Radeon HD 6620G integrated GPU which operated at 444MHz.

A report on AMD's future strategy made the rounds yesterday with speculation that the company might exit the x86 market, but that won't be the case anytime soon — AMD just told us that it "remains committed to the x86 market," but will be realigning around industry trends toward low-power devices and the cloud. That sounds like smartphones, tablets, and servers to us, but we'll see what the company has in store at its February strategy update — and what "committed" actually means as AMD figures out what's next. AMD Releases Catalyst 11.11 Drivers

AMD yesterday released its 11.11 Catalyst driver package, not three weeks after last month's 11.10 release. As usual, supported operating systems include 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Vista desktops and laptops and Windows XP desktops.
The new drivers fully support Adobe Flash Player 11's Stage 3D API and Stage 3D Applications, and add support for the full line-up of Radeon HD GPUs and A and E-series APUs. Issues have been resolved in Windows 7 with Rage, Far Cry 2, Homefront, and DC Universe Online, though issues still remain for Crossfire users with particular configurations and in particular games (Battlefield 3 and Skyrim among them). Hmm, tha's not so exciting, rumor has it that a hand full of AMD's Radeon HD 7000 series entry-level cards will be rebadged Radeon HD 6000 series chips. The Radeon HD 6350, 6450, 6570 and 6670 will basically be renamed 7350, 7450, 7570 and 7670.
The source also shows two possibilities for Radeon HD 7700 series. First, and more plausible, is that the series is based on Juniper (a hop across two previous generations!); the second is that these make use of rechristened GPUs from a slightly higher market position from the previous generation. The chip maker was eerily prescient when it said it expected others to beat the record and that unnatural confidence in the silicon has paid off. AMD has finalized its Catalyst 11.10 drivers, which have been available in some form of hotfix or preview download since late September. Although today's release notes don't seem to mention any raw performance boosts, previous iterations brought various improvements to Battlefield 3 and Rage, so you should stand to gain those increases if you're upgrading from Catalyst 11.9 or earlier. Besides the ambiguous speed boosts, Catalyst 11.10 totes a handful of new features and a slew of bug fixes.

Just last month, AMD staged an event to squeeze an amazing 8429.38 MHz out of its FX-8150 processor. The highest-clocked CPU in the world—it was a big production. And now they've been beat by a team of one.
Andre Yang eked out a 32 MHz advantage over AMD's team—but he did it without the sponsorship, camera crew, and most importantly, the teamwork. All it took, TechPowerUp reports, is 2 GB of RAM, an ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard, and a scalding hot 2 volts of electricity pumped into the chip. Like AMD's official record, Yang's overclocked masterpiece was running with almost all of its cores disabled to prevent it from melting through his table and down to the center of the earth.

TSMC starts 28nm production: NVIDIA & AMD in but Apple absent

TSMC, tipped to be biting into Samsung’s supply contract with Apple, has announced that it has begun volume production of 28nm chips and has products already shipping to customers, though the company did not confirm Apple was one of them. Instead, AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Altera all get name-checked, with AMD and NVIDIA saying they will be using the 28nm process silicon in their next-gen graphics products.
