Swype updated to support Ice Cream Sandwich
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
The popular third-party software keyboard Swype has been updated to support Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Swype is an app that uses word prediction in combination with swiping motions to allow users to quickly write emails, text messages, tweets and anything else that requires text input. The software is still not available in the Android Market, unfortunately, and it must be downloaded from the company’s website. Though the software is currently in beta stages for Android 4.0, users have yet to report any major issues.

Count ViewSonic among the manufacturers who fully intend to build a tablet or two around Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system, though a launch in the U.S. might depend on how many Windows 8 tablets ViewSonic is able to sell in Taiwan. Max Liu, product marketing director of ViewSonic Asia Pacific, reportedly confirmed a Windows 8 tablet is in the company's cards and that it would ship in the second quarter of 2012 at the earliest.

HP CEO: We’re not done with WebOS yet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPwebOS 3.0
At HP’s Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas, hardly a word was spoken on their WebOS efforts in 2011. And it’s not hard to see why: the few phones and single TouchPad tablet that sprang from the acquisition of Palm bombed so badly that the only wat to recoup losses was a massive fire sale. But surprisingly, HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman didn’t seem phased: at her keynote this morning, she reiterated HP’s commitment to the WebOS platform.
“What Apple is doing with iOS is great, but it’s a closed platform,” said Whitman, after highlighting the company’s decision in December to open source WebOS. “What Google is doing with Android is great, but with their acquisition of Motorola, I fear that it m...

GrooveShark’s HTML5 site now works on Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Windows Phone 7.5
We have all been told the future of cross-platform apps are HTML5, but a few weeks ago GrooveShark discovered IE9 Mobile was just not ready, and while their HTML5-based streaming music website worked fine in other mobile browsers it did not work at all on Windows Phone 7.
Thankfully Microsoft did not leave it at that, and approached the Grooveshark developer to explore work-arounds. He writes:
Yes, you read that correctly. After my previous post discussing how Grooveshark’s new HTML5 site would not work on Windows Phone 7 devices, Ben Riga, Technical Evangelist on the Windows Phone team, contacted me and offered to help. He discussed the issues with Eric Lawrence, Program Manager at Microso...

Facebook version 2.3 has just gone live in the Windows Phone Marketplace and it's just as big an update as we were expecting. The app has gotten a complete overhaul of the UI which fits in beautifully with WP's Metro UI.
The update not only gives a complete UI redesign, but adds tons of functionality to the app. The app now gives users access to Facebook Pages, Groups, privacy info and banner images. There are new filters to allow you to see specific types of posts in your feed. Additionally, users can now "like" posts in their feed.

Enyo has already been downloaded 40,000 times in the three weeks since its release, the team says, and now there’s the Isis Project, “a fast, standards-compliant web browser engine,” to go along with it.

Leak: Photo: Motorola's first Android 4.0 smartphone has Intel inside
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid 4.0
Last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Intel got up on stage and said that they’ve signed two hardware partners to use their new Medfield smartphone platform. What made us actually care about this announcement instead of just rolling our eyes, because Intel has been promising to enter the smartphone market every year for the past five years, was that they also showed off a production ready reference platform that companies could use to get a device out the door in little to no time. One of those two hardware partners, Lenovo, went so far as to show off an actual Intel based smartphone at the show, the K800. The other hardware partner, Motorola, said they’d be releasing a d...

Due to overwhelming interest, the Monday deadline for registration has been extended to February 15th and all developers will have until March 2nd to submit their apps. As of last Friday, there had been more than 1,500 app submissions and over 6,600 new developers registered in the BlackBerry App World according to RIM. According to a post on its blog late Monday, the company is “working around the clock to approve vendor registrations and app submissions.”

Spotify update looking to suck even more data on your iPhone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Spotify for iOS has gotten a pretty nice update which adds a new option for song streaming, although it could be pretty costly if you have a lot limit on your monthly data plan for your iPhone or iPad. The new option adds the "Extreme" song quality option, which will deliver songs to you at a very respectable 320kbps. Of course, it is likely recommended that you not use the new streaming option on mobile data, but the potential for misuse is there by adventurous users.
This is an option that has been in existence in the desktop versions of Spotify, but this is the first time it has been seen on mobile. There has been no word as to whether or not the option will make it to other mobile platf...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 delivers entry-level Ice Cream Sandwich
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSamsungGoogleAndroid 4.0GALAXY Tab 2 (7.0)
Samsung has outed its latest tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), the Ice Cream Sandwich successor to the original Galaxy Tab model from 2010. Built around a 7-inch 1024 x 600 PLS LCD display, the new Galaxy Tab 2 has a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, along with WiFi and a 3-megapixel rear facing camera.
There are several signs that this is a budget model, targeting the entry-level in Samsung’s expansive tablet line-up. For a start, the main camera is fixed-focus, and has no LED flash; the front-facing camera, meanwhile, is VGA resolution rather than the more typical 1.3-megapixel or above. It’s also 10.5mm thick, not vast in the grand scheme of things, but still chubbier...

Windows 8 Wireless Networking Secrets Revealed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
With a consumer preview on the horizon, Microsoft recently provided some details about the wireless networking features in Windows 8.
Redmond has re-engineered the wireless networking stack to optimize the experience in Windows 8, the company said in a recent blog post.
People want similar mobility on their PCs as they get on their smartphones," wrote Billy Anders, a group program manager on Microsoft's devices and networking team. "It is unlikely that your end goal is just to get connected to the Internet. Instead, connecting to the Internet is a step (or a hurdle) towards what you really want to do, like surf, socialize, or explore, and you would prefer that your PC is connected and ready ...

Photos of unannounced HTC Ice Cream Sandwich phone leak ahead of MWC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
Images of an unannounced Android smartphone from HTC have been published online ahead of a possible announcement at the Mobile World Congress trade show later this month. The nameless device features a design similar to Verizon Wireless’s DROID Incredible line of phones, leading phoneArena.com to speculate that it could hit the market as the DROID Incredible 3. The smartphone is running Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich along with Sense 4.0 — just like the HTC Ville — and other notable specs include a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and 4G LTE connectivity. Given the timing of the leak, we may see HTC introduce the phone alongside the ultra-thin HTC Ville and the...

Mystery HTC Ice Cream Sandwich phone for Verizon surfaces
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCVerizon WirelessGoogleAndroid 4.0
Looky what we have here – a brand new HTC Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone! What's that model we're dealing with here? Well, you might be surprised, but we actually don't have a clue. We were recently approached by a tipster of ours who was generous enough to share these pics with us. Thanks to the photos, we can learn quite a bit about this mysterious handset, but unfortunately, we can't be sure how it's going to be called, or what carriers it may end up on. However, some of our observant readers have noted that the 4G LTE logo that's visible during the loading screen is the one that Verizon uses for its handsets, so that's a pretty good guess as to where the phone may end up.
