Microsoft officially confirmed the new branding for its Windows 8 operating system today. The new Windows logo, a play on the company's internal Metro design, will be used across the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. We saw images of the logo leak earlier this week, but the company unveiled it officially today stating that the logo is a Window rather than the traditional flag found in earlier versions of Windows. "We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic," says Microsoft's Sam Moreau.

CyanogenMod Android team ask for community cash support

You won’t see this sentence very often: CyanogenMod is asking for money. As you may well know, the Android community uses the modification to Android known as CyanogenMod more than any other custom ROM, hands down. And today they’re asking that you help them out with their otherwise free service by donating some cash to help support the purchase of “a couple of solid, stable Xeon-class servers with large amounts of RAM and fast disks.” They’re currently using PayPal, which is unfortunate for the apparent mobs of users boycotting the service at the moment (there’s a lot of overlap with the modding community) but you’ve got other options as well.

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

Apple stated Friday that the launch of OS X Mountain Lion would be truly download-only. The Mac maker briefed Pocket-lint that it wouldn't stock versions preloaded on USB drives like it has with the current Lion release. Offering a physical option was an "interesting test," but the Mac App Store was "just fine" in practice for getting a copy, Apple said.
Not mentioned was whether or not users could still create their own disk image and load that on a USB drive or a disc. The options were never official and will likely still be an option given that the Lion installer was ultimately a package with a typical install image inside.

Apple may be coy on touchscreen MacBooks, but PC manufacturers are tipped to be gung-ho on touch-enabled Windows 8 ultrabooks, with a range of form-factors and designs expected later in 2012. Lenovo, Asus and Acer are all said to have finger-friendly models in the pipeline, DigiTimes reports, though limitations around hinge design have apparently forced some creative thinking in what each company’s version will look like.

Acer has begun pushing out Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Iconia Tab A200 owners in the US today, the company has confirmed to us, with the OTA upgrade expected to be completed by the end of next week. Meanwhile, the 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100 and 10-inch Iconia Tab A500 are both on track to be updated to ICS in April. However, don’t expect pure, unadulterated Android 4.0 on your refreshed slate.

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs

Apple Mountain Lion will force many Mac models into legacy status, with no support for the upcoming OS X refresh for numerous pre-2007 MacBooks, MacBook Pros and desktops. The minimum hardware requirements of Mountain Lion - which we previewed comprehensively yesterday - apparently count out multiple models using integrated Intel GPUs, so TUAW‘s developer source says. That means, if you have a pre-unibody MacBook or the original MacBook Air, there’s no Mountain Lion for you.
Those notebooks using Intel GMA 950 or Intel GMA X3100 GPUs are apparently out of luck, but the list also includes the 8-core Mac Pro from 2007 and the mid-2007 Mac mini. However, if you have one of the following models ...

Last July, Mozilla acknowledged that it was planning to build a mobile operating system. Today, the non-profit development organization that created the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email system provided an initial view of what that foundation, named Boot2Gecko (BTG), will look like. Mozilla is promising to demo it at the upcoming Mobile World Congress later this month.

We all know Samsung will rollout the Android 4.0 update for its super-popular Galaxy S II smartphone later this year. However, Sprint customers may be wondering whether they’ll have to wait longer, since their particular version of the device (Epic 4G Touch) is specific, made to sing along the carrier’s WiMAX network. Plus, Sprint (and other mobile operators for that matter) always want to test the phone software thoroughly before releasing it to the general public, the process that usually ends-up in prolonged wait time for the end-users.

Effort underway to port HARET / Android to Gen 1 Windows Phones

Some ex-Windows Mobile users may remember HARET as the tool used to enable to booting of Android on the old HTC HD2.
Now an effort is underway to bring the tool to Windows Phone 7. I think it is safe to say the lead on the project is doing this more as a way to convert a nice Windows Phones to Android, writing:
WP7 is and will be shipped on many devices with quality hardware. In order to be able to run Linux on these, a novel aim is to investigate the use of HaRET on WP7 based devices.
I am sure however that there are a few Windows Phone users who would not mind hacking around with their device to access the full potential of the hardware.

Notion Ink releases Adam ICS Beta ROM, but it's a bit raw

Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan has been keeping everyone up to speed on the development process for the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Notion Ink Adam tablet, and today marks a pretty big day in that process. Just before the new year, Rohan showed off a pre-Alpha build of the Android 4.0 update, but today brought the beta release of the ROM.
The development seems to have come along fairly well, and the team now has confirmed that 3G is now working, as well as graphics acceleration, YouTube HD, and USB.
