Trumstand iPhone dock uses a horn rather than electronics
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4iPhone 4s
We talk about a lot of iPhone speaker docks around here, and generally, they are crammed with digital amps and other electronic whatnots. This iPhone stand is different because it is an acoustic stand with no electronics that uses a horn like some sort of demented trumpet to increase the sound from your iPhone. The device is called the Trumstand.
You slip your iPhone into the dock holder, and that s-curve tube picks up the music from the speaker on the bottom of your smartphone and shoots it through the bends until it comes out of the horn opening like an old crank record player. There are two versions of the Trumstand with one offering gold plating and the other in sterling silver.

Installing Google Wallet on the Nexus Just Got Way Easier
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Nexus CDMA
erizon thought it was sooo slick, blocking Google Wallet on the new Galaxy Nexus in order to promote its in-house alternative. Too bad Verizon didn't count on the Internet.
Thanks to some kindly souls over at the XDA-Developers Forum, Google Wallet is now available on the Nexus—without hacks or roots. They were able to modify the app to work on the Nexus and install as an APK. Nexus users will need a file explorer to locate the app once its on the phone but that's about it. The APK is available for download...

Huawei Honor lands in America on Cricket Wireless for just $250
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHuaweiHonor
No one in living in a rich Western country takes Huawei seriously because of their reputation for making cheap low end Android smartphones. All that’s about to change thanks to the Honor. Announced back in late August, we got some hands-on time with the Honor earlier this month and came away impressed. Make no mistake, it’s no where near the fit and finish of something like the Samsung Galaxy S II or Apple iPhone 4S, but it’s a huge step up from previous Huawei devices. Best of all, it’s still priced well within most people’s budgets. When we played with the Honor we were told it would come in at less than $300 unsubsidized. Today we can finally confirm that the Honor is indeed coming to Ame...

AT&T HTC Elite and LTE Windows Phone incoming - SlashGear
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
Details on two of HTC‘s 2012 smartphone flagships have been reportedly revealed, including an Ice Cream Sandwich uber-phone and a 4.7-inch AT&T LTE Windows Phone, as the company apparently pares down its offerings from 2011′s gush of devices. The HTC Elite will be an Android 4.0 device for AT&T, BGR‘s sources tell them, potentially launching as the “HTC Congressional” complete with Beats Audio in the first half of April. It will be preceded by what may well be the first LTE Windows Phone, scheduled for the beginning of February.

There are more than just a couple of mobile operating systems out there in the world, believe it or not ladies and gentlemen, and if Samsung has anything to say about it in 2012, you’ll know the third heat to be Bada. We’ve had our hands on a few devices late this year running Samsung’s own personal brand of operating system, each of these devices with the lovely “Wave” name attached to them, and we’re to understand today that an update will be coming to a handful of these devices inside 2012. Hopefully it’ll be early on in the year as the last time we heard the Bada 2.0 update was swinging through was inside 2011, and that’s no longer looking too likely.

IBM predicts mind-controlled smartphones in the next five years
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesIBM
Since 2006, IBM has predicted what technological advances the next five years will bring as part of its "5 in 5" series, and this year the company says that by 2017 the technology to read brain impulses will have advanced to the point where you could conceivably have a baseball hat that reads your mind and transmits your thoughts to your smartphone. This sounds great, but the recent "Project Black Mirror" Siri hack / hoax brought some attention to thought-controlled computing and it sounds like this technology is still much more than five years away.

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMicrosoftOrangeGoogleAndroidWindows Phone 7
Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.
What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Nexus CDMA
It seems that the new Google/Samsung Galaxy Nexus is having a little “antennagate” of its own. After Twitter user Jack Doyle tweeted to Verizon about signal strength issues he’s experiencing with his Galaxy Nexus, the Verizon Wireless Support team confirmed: “The signal strength issue is currently being investigated. We don’t have an ETA, but a software update is being developed.”

Nokia says next software update for Lumia 800 will address new battery concerns
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
Nokia has announced that the forthcoming software update for the Lumia 800 that is due to arrive early next year will include a fix for recent battery life issues cited by users. This is the second software update issued for the Lumia 800, with the first one being distributed earlier this month. Users have reported that the Lumia 800 is reporting less battery life than it should be, and Nokia confirms that this is indeed the case. Nokia does note that there is nothing wrong with the battery itself, and the problem can be addressed with a software update. Also coming with the update are more performance enhancements for the Lumia 800. Nokia says the update is on track for an early 2012 releas...

How to check your GSM Galaxy Nexus version
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
For those of you out there who have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but aren't on Verizon, we have a trick for you that will show you what variant of the GSM Galaxy Nexus you have with a simple app from the Market. No matter what version you have, you'll get the OTA updates directly from Google, but some will have region/carrier specific tweaks.
Just grab the GN Official Update Checker app from the Android Market, which will let you know what you're dealing with. Verizon Galaxy Nexus users will all see that your device is labeled as "mysid" and that your updates are not coming direct from Google, because your device needs the Verizon specific tweaks, which need to be tested by Verizon before bei...

iPhones, iPod Touches still on iOS 3.1.3 can't download new apps directly from the App Store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPortable Media PlayersOperating SystemsTabletsApple
While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. We were able to confirm the issue on one of our own devices, while there's a pretty lengthy thread in Apple's support forum about the issue, but no official respo...

Android 4.0 ICS tablet interface discovered inside Galaxy Nexus
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGALAXY NexusAndroid 4.0
Back a few months ago there was a discovery made by an intrepid developer inside Android’s Honeycomb OS in which changing the LCD density to a smaller value than the tablet it was running on had revealed a smartphone interface for the otherwise tablet-sized OS – one day after the USA-based Galaxy Nexus has been revealed here in the USA and our pal Michael Crider from Android Community has discovered that essentially the same thing happens in reverse with Ice Cream Sandwich. What Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is meant to do for the Google mobile OS is create one single OS that works just as well for handsets as it does for tablets, but until now we’ve got less than an adequate look at what t...
