The camera modules in smartphones continually improve, and these days there are phones like the iPhone 4S and the Nokia N9 who can take snapshots as good -- and sometimes better -- than point-and-shoots. Polaroid's known for making cameras, but its newest device, a rebrand of the Aigo A8 we saw at CES last year, flips the script by taking a 16 megapixel point-and-shoot and shoving an Android phone inside.

The ink is drying on the agreement 'twixt Samsung and TomTom for the latter's maps and location content will appear on the Wave 3 Bada smartphone. Owners of the device will get access to TomTom's global maps, point of interest information, 3D city maps as well as live traffic updates and speed camera notifications. It's premature to speculate, but given Android and Nokia's free GPS apps, we could see this as the start of a new direction for the mapping company. There's no word on if the service will be free to use or when it'll be available, but we've got plenty of other details tucked below the break.

For all the worn out Samsung Captivate owners out there, today is the day. The update from Android 2.2 Froyo to the Gingerbread goodness is finally out, and you can stop the nail-biting.
We certainly kid, but the update has really taken a while, while the world has moved on to Android 4.0 ICS. Samsung, however, said it is not planning to bring ICS to the Galaxy S and its versions, so Gingerbread will be your last snack with the Samsung Captivate, if you decide to keep it to the end of your two-year contract.

Well here's some pretty fab news: the Samsung Galaxy Note is en route to Canada and that network will boast LTE sometime this quarter. The LTE launch alone gives us tingles up our spines, but coupled with this useful little handset, we're overjoyed. Telus, however, didn't provide any information on the exact date of the Note's launch nor even a hint of what it might cost, but we'd expect that'll come tumbling our way soon. Nuance brings its Dragon Go! voice assistant to Android

Voice control is a growing mobile trend and Nuance is one of the leaders in this field. It has a variety of mobile products including Dragon Go!, a voice assistant that launched on iOS last year and is now available for Android.
Dragon Go! is a search assistant that lets you talk to your phone and find information. It’s like Google Voice Search for Android, but supports a lot more commands. You can ask it to find the times for a film that’s showing in a local theatre or name what plane is flying overhead. It uses Nuance’s refined voice recognition algorithm and a variety of back-end services including Google search, Wolfram Alpha, Yelp and more.

Sony Xperia S has PlayStation certification and 720p display, available this quarter

One of Sony's inaugural batch of Sony-branded phones, the Xperia S is the device that had been rumored over the last few weeks as the Nozomi with a 4.3-inch 720p display. Today it's been officially announced, and the specs are designed to impress: besides the gap-free laminated Reality Display, the Xperia S features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 12-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor, NFC support, PlayStation certification, and a unique "transparent element" along the bottom that offsets the solid black face. On paper, the phone is quite similar to AT&T's Xperia Ion — also announced today — but it lacks the Ion's LTE support (a sign of its European focus) and uses a slightly smaller display.

If all the Windows Phone and Android news isn't really striking your fancy and iPhones hold no appeal then, perhaps, your interest will be piqued by the BlackBerry Curve 9370 which was just announced. Verizon unveiled the latest budget-friendly RIM device for CES and it doesn't depart too much from the QWERTY, candybar mold. In addition to CDMA radios it's also got GSM for globetrotters and NFC for those that want to hop on the next wave of mobile payment tech. Droid Razr family gets a new addition -- his name is Maxx

We've seen it teased, prodded and leaked, but now it's officially official. Motorola's taking the Droid Razr family to the limit one more time with the Maxx. According to the company, the model retains that "impossibly thin" shape we've all come to know and love at 8.99mm, but manages to squeeze in extended battery life, giving you 21 hours on a charge. The Maxx packs 32GB of storage and will run you a cool $300 plus the requisite two-year contract.

Sony Xperia ion with 4G LTE support heading to AT&T

AT&T has impressively announced at CES 2012 six new 4G LTE devices to launch on its network early this year, five of which are smartphones with one being the Sony Xperia ion. This powerful 4G LTE smartphone will be an AT&T exclusive expected to launch in the second quarter of 2012.
The Sony Xperia ion features a massive 4.6-inch HD display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution along with two HD cameras. The front-facing camera is capable of capturing 720p HD video, while the rear-facing camera is capable of 1080p Full HD video recording and features a 12-megapixel resolution. With Sony’s Fast Capture technology, the cameras can go from standby mode to first shot in 1.5 seconds.

Fujitsu distributed a flyer at CES teasing a quad-core Tegra 3 Android phone with a 12-GPU graphics accellerator running Ice Cream Sandwich. Quad-core tablets are only just starting to show up, so having that kind of power in a phone should make for some decreased battery life because there's less room for a big power cell. We'll get a look at Fujitsu's high performance phone as well as its water resistant gadgets soon.

No surprises here, but Motorola and Verizon have just announced the 0.5-inches thick LTE Droid 4. The Droid 4 has a 4-inch, qHD display with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard memory. Additionally, the 8 megapixel camera can shoot 1080p, HD video. There is no specific availability but it should be making its way to Verizon in the coming weeks.

AT&T has just added a new handset to its stable of devices today, introducing the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD at its Developer Summit keynote, here at CES. Powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, this "razor-thin" handset boasts a spacious 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1280 x 720 resolution), boasts LTE support, and comes with a removable battery. AT&T and HTC Announce HTC Titan II with 16 MP Camera

HTC CEO Peter Chou took the stage at AT&T's developer conference keynote, and held up the HTC Titan II - AT&T's first LTE WP7 device. This comes just a few hours before Nokia is expected to present its own LTE-enabled WP7 device on AT&T.
The Titan II includes a whopping 16 MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor with a wide angle optical system alongside dual LED flash, image stabilization, and 720p video recording. The Titan II is also powered by a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S2 SoC, in line with current WP7 devices.

It has been just 5 months since the launch of the Motorola Droid 3, and today at day 0 on CES, Motorola has announced its 4G LTE-enabled replacement, the Motorola Droid 4. The Motorola Droid 4 appears to marry the industrial design and profile of the Motorola Droid RAZR to a five-row QWERTY keyboard and likewise includes the same 1.2 GHz OMAP4430 SoC.
