Huawei Activa 4G gets your 4G LTE fix on MetroPCS for $149 contract-free

Huawei Activa 4G gets your 4G LTE fix on MetroPCS for $149 contract-free

MetroPCS is known for offering 4G LTE smartphones on the cheap, but it's going for a record today. The Activa 4G isn't just Huawei's first LTE smartphone in the US, it's temporarily the least expensive LTE phone in the country at $149 contract-free for a "limited time." Digging around, it's certainly possible to find out how Huawei and MetroPCS reached that price: the 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 screen, 800MHz processor and five-megapixel rear shooter won't have Verizon Galaxy S III customers developing second thoughts. Still, there is a front VGA camera on the Android 2.3-toting phone, and MetroPCS preloads a copy of the movie Kung-Fu Panda 2 on the bundled 4GB microSD card. You won't have to wait ...

Huawei preparing its own Emotion UI to sit atop Android

Huawei preparing its own Emotion UI to sit atop Android

Huawei is trying to make a name for itself in the high-end smartphone market, and the company's just revealed the next phase of that plan. Unfortunately for lovers of pure vanilla Android, the next step appears to be a custom skin called Emotion UI. Details are scarce, but Chinese reporters got ahold of an invitation for a June 9th announce event, and Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong says that the new UI should be available as an upgrade starting in July. Here's hoping the interface is opt-in or opt-out: At first blush, one of the things we loved most about the Huawei Ascend P1 and Ascend D series was the ability to completely turn off their "3D Home" UI for a stock Android 4.0 experience, and we'd l...

Oppo teases 6.65mm-thick smartphone, about to steal 'world's thinnest' title from Huawei

Oppo teases 6.65mm-thick smartphone, about to steal 'world's thinnest' title from Huawei

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

China-based Oppo is back again with yet another smartphone, only this time there's no pretty girl teasing Mr. DiCaprio. Instead, what we have here is an exclusive leak that shows off a 6.65mm-thick device -- just 0.03mm thinner than the Ascend P1 S from local rival Huawei. In other words, if all goes well then Oppo will have us the world's slimmest smartphone. Details are scarce at the moment, but judging by the above picture this phone will come with a metallic bezel of some sort, along with three capacitive buttons and a three-pin contact for dock connection. Obviously, stay tuned for more deets.

Huawei Ascend G312 (U8680) lands at FCC, unsurprisingly sports T-Mobile myTouch moniker

It's far from a secret that T-Mobile has been cooking up its next myTouch handset with Huawei (also known as the Ascend G312), and now a phone bearing the same moniker has landed at the door of the FCC. According to the label location diagrams, it plays nice with HSPA, UMTS, GPRS, GSM and Edge, but there's no indication of whether this Huawei U8680 is the QWERTY variant we spotted at the company's headquarters. If you'll recall, Huawei has this 4-inch (WVGA) device pegged to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, running atop a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T SoC with 1GB of RAM that's supplemented by 4GB of on-board storage. Of course, this doesn't leave us with any more information about when T-Mo...

Huawei puts HTC, Samsung to shame with an Ice Cream Sandwich phone first

Huawei puts HTC, Samsung to shame with an Ice Cream Sandwich phone first

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” is now available on the first non-Nexus phone in the world, but it’s not from Samsung or HTC, as you might expect. Instead, Huawei can lay claim to the honour of being first out of the gate, while almost everyone else was stuck showing off new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” phones at CES two weeks ago.
The rather charming Huawei Honor, with a 4-inch display, 1.4GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera is the first phone to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, apart from the Google-backed Samsung Galaxy Nexus (The older Nexus S has also already received the update).

Huawei Ascent P1 S revealed as world’s slimmest Android

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

The folks at Huawei are coming at the world of mobile strong this week with the Huawei Ascend P1 S, a device which they first and foremost tout as the world’s slimmest Android smartphone. This device is 6.68 mm thick, has a fabulous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD 960 x 540 pixel touchscreen, and has a Gorilla Glass panel on the front – the first panel, not the Gorilla Glass 2 revealed this week as well. Inside you’ll find a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 CPU at 1.5 GHz and outside a lovely pink back.

Huawei outs super-thin Ascend P1 S smartphone, raised entirely on fruit and veg

Filed in: Cell PhonesHuawei

Huawei has been up to some impressive stuff lately, so we're not totally shocked to see this top-spec phone reveal itself at CES. Perhaps the Ascend P1 S's most surprising attribute is its thickness -- a mere 6.68mm (0.26-inches), which would let it glide past the 7.1mm Droid RAZR with barely a slice in the air. The screen is 4.3-inches along the diagonal, qHD 540 x 960, and -- to HTC's shame -- it claims to be Super AMOLED. There's a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 inside, clocked at 1.5GHz and accompanied by a SGX 540 GPU, which should be plenty sufficient to record 1080p video on the eight megapixel backside-illuminated camera. As if that wasn't enough, the Chinese manufacturer has also taken the ...

Specs wise, we’re talking about an entry-level device with a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, 600MHz processor, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, microSD memory card slot, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show.
US Cellular will give away the Ascend II for free to anyone willing to commit on a two-year agreement with Belief Plan with Data Plus. Actually, you’ll have to pay $1...

Huawei Honor lands in America on Cricket Wireless for just $250

Huawei Honor lands in America on Cricket Wireless for just $250

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

No one in living in a rich Western country takes Huawei seriously because of their reputation for making cheap low end Android smartphones. All that’s about to change thanks to the Honor. Announced back in late August, we got some hands-on time with the Honor earlier this month and came away impressed. Make no mistake, it’s no where near the fit and finish of something like the Samsung Galaxy S II or Apple iPhone 4S, but it’s a huge step up from previous Huawei devices. Best of all, it’s still priced well within most people’s budgets. When we played with the Honor we were told it would come in at less than $300 unsubsidized. Today we can finally confirm that the Honor is indeed coming to Ame...

Huawei Honor shipping in December to select markets

Huawei Honor shipping in December to select markets

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Next month may be a long December, but we've got reason to believe that this year will be better than the last -- if you've been digging the scoop on the Huawei Honor, anyways. The device, with its colorful assortment of six different hues, will be ready for an official release in the twelfth month to China, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, with other markets following later (there's no word on when the Honor will arrive on Cricket as the Glory). We've known for quite some time that it was coming this quarter, and we already know the specs: Huawei's new darling will come running Android 2.3.5 underneath a proprietary skin, be powered by a 1.4GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM, and off...

Huawei Vision coming to the UK in time for Christmas

Huawei Vision coming to the UK in time for Christmas

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Huawei has come to town to announce that its flagship Gingerbread smartphone, the Huawei Vision, will be hitting the UK in time for Christmas.
Old London Town, that is - the location for the Chinese company's dedicated European design centre for its Mobile Device business, that it will open at the beginning of next year.
If you didn't know already, the Vision is an Android 2.3 device that boasts a funky new UI over the top with a nice 3D (in the old sense of the word) effect going on.
But don't go getting all excited thinking it might get an Ice Cream Sandwich update - it won't. That's according to OneMobileRing, who learnt from a product spokesperson the handset will not be making the jump ...

Huawei Honor gets knighted by the FCC, beelines it straight for Cricket as the Glory

Posted on Oct 07, 2011 by MG1

Huawei's four-inch flagship has appeared at a rigorous FCC screening, and this one comes with several radio band changes since its formal reveal. This new CDMA 800/1700(AWS)/1900 variant, making it through the Commission as the M886, indicates the Honor will be making a showing in the US on Cricket as the Huawei Glory. You can expect to see the Gingerbread-running device come with a 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) screen, a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, a sizable 1,900mAh battery, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing cam. If its expected November release remains true, this may easily be the best-selling device on the prepaid carrier for the holiday season. Check out mor...

Huawei Honor claims three days battery life

Posted on Sep 27, 2011 by MG1

Following up on some leaked press shots, Huawei today announced its latest Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread smartphone called the Honor. The Honor packs a 16M 16:9 true color high-definition (HD) 4-inch FWVGA capacitive touch screen. Here are some other specs:
1.4 GHz processor
8-megapixel HDR-enabled camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera
A sleek 10.9 mm-thin body and weighs just 140g
Exclusive Huawei user interface
DLNA-certified
Although the specs on the Honor are impressive, the most intriguing feature is perhaps its 1,900 mAh battery. Huawei says its Honor “frees consumers from the inconvenience of searching for an electricity source, allowing them to share and connect for up to three da...
