The message at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year was loud and clear: Ultrabooks are here to stay. Intel finds itself in similar territory after spearheading the once hugely popular netbook market, and so does AMD, which has a chance to take a mulligan and do things differently this time. AMD waited too long to get into netbook alternatives, and this time around, the Sunnyvale chip maker doesn't want history to repeat itself.

Quad-Core Intel Atom CPUs Coming in 2013

In a slide leaked by ComputerBase, we see the first rumors of quad-core based Atom processors that is set to be released in 2013. This is on the heals of the release on the new Cedar Trail processors in 2012, fitting in with the announcement made by Intel in May 2011, when Intel said it would release three major updates for the Atom family of products over the following 36 months.
Saltwell will be the first new batch of CPUs, based on the 32nm manufacturing process technology and due out in 2012. Intel Confirms Working DX11 on Ivy Bridge

Yesterday we reported Intel ran a video of a DX11 title instead of running the actual game itself on a live Ivy Bridge notebook during Mooly Eden's press conference. After the press conference Intel let me know that the demo was a late addition to the presentation and they didn't have time to set it up live but insisted that it worked. I believed Intel (I spent a lot of time with Ivy Bridge at the end of last year and saw no reason to believe that DX11 functionality was broken) but I needed definitive proof that there wasn't some issue that Intel was trying to deliberately hide. Intel promptly invited me to check out the demo live on an Ivy Bridge notebook which I just finished doing.

The new line offers a combination of dedicated 3D graphics and video processors, a digital signal processor built for high-quality audio, and TI's WiLink 7.0 and BlueLink 7.0 technologies which allow the car to act as a mobile hotspot for all of your devices. Intel Atom does Quad-Core in 2013

As ARM is continuing its push on the computer market, Intel has begun to step up its own game, apparently going as far as increasing the core number on its low-end processors, reports softpedia.
Even though 2012 has only just begun, there are already rumors about what may or may not happen in 2013. Intel is the subject of the latest report, along with a certain series of CPUs (central processing units). It is said that the Atom line will start to include quad-core members next year. This would fit with the announcement made by the Santa Clara, California-based company in May, 2011.

Engineers arrested for selling sample CPUs on eBay

Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested four engineers for allegedly selling sample Intel processors on eBay. The suspects, who were confirmed to be engineers at an OEM plant in Taiwan, were taken into custody in the city of Taoyuan.
According to reports, detectives had been tracking the suspects since September and conducted a raid on the individual’s homes last month. Authorities seized 178 sample CPUs with an estimated street value of $82,500. The suspects have admitted to selling more than 500 ES-branded chips since 2009.

Intel Atom D2550, N2650, N2850 on the Horizon

Last week, Intel launched its third-generation Atom processor platform for netbooks and low-power PCs, codenamed "Cedar Trail", with mobile variants including the 1.60 GHz N2600 and 1.83 GHz N2800. Earlier, it launched its low-power PC variants, the 1.86 GHz D2500 and 2.13 GHz D2700. As a result of a slip-up, Intel disclosed a three new models in the datasheet (PDF) document of the new Atom series. These include the new 1.70 GHz N2650, 2.00 GHz N2850, which will likely replace the N2600 and N2800 in the future; and the D2550. Intel OEM Engineers Caught Selling Sample Chips on eBay

Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested four engineers for allegedly selling Intel processors designated as Engineer Samples (ES) on eBay for personal profit. Intel ES chips are the property of Intel and are often sent off to reviewers and OEM manufacturers prior to commercial release in order to test for compatibility. In theory, they're supposed to be returned to Intel.

Intel EOLs over 25 processors

To make room for the upcoming launch of 22nm Ivy Bridge processors in April 2012, Intel has notified its hardware partners of its schedule for stopping the supply or production of over 25 existing desktop CPU models, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Intel has issued a notice to suspend the supply of Core i5-661/660, Core i3-530, Pentium E5700 and Celeron E3500 and will cease the production of those models in the second quarter of 2012, the sources indicated.

Atom chip on Android smartphones expected at CES

LG Electronics and Samsung are expected to unveil Android smartphones next week that use Intel's latest Atom chip, dubbed Medfield, analysts said. The move, if it pans out, could portend a shift away from ARM-based chips, which are in 95 percent of smartphones.
The arrival of Atom-based smartphones at the International CES show in Las Vegas would join Google and Intel at the hip, said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates. With Google in the midst of acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, at least some Motorola smartphones could be soon running Atom chips, as well.

Intel to launch 40 new server processors in 1H12

Intel is set to launch 40 new processors including those for its upcoming Romley platform, in the first half of 2012 with the company to release 20 models each quarter, according to sources from server players.
In the first quarter, Intel will release two six-core processors Xeon E5-1660 and 1650 and a quad-core processor priced at US$1,080, US$583 and US$294, respectively and will launch seven eight-core processors including Xeon E5-2690, four six-core processors including E5-2640, three quad-core processors including E5-2609 and dual-core processor E5-2637.

It's been a tough week or so for Gigabyte marketing. It had to admit that quite a few people had burned their motherboards, to which it offered free replacements, and isolated the problem to faulty firmware. There has been talk that this firmware cripples overclocking by throttling CPU clock speed under extreme stress. Gigabyte set out to do some myth-busting.
