Motorola DROID Pro Reviews

Digital Trends‘s review Edit

In our unscientific side-by-side comparison, music from the Droid did sound crisper and brighter than it did on an iPhone, though… an altogether pleasant surprise.

What makes the DROID completely unusual from any other phone, including other Android based Smartphones, is that its the first to receive Google Maps Navigation. Some might still question whether or not Google Maps Navigation can supplant a stand alone GPS. Three words: without a doubt. Although the Google Maps Navigation UI isn’t as speedy as a stand alone GPS it has yet to completely fail me; it put me at the wrong end of a street that was in fact a dead end and required me to walk two minutes to my destination, something stand alone GPS devices have long done. There are so many options that I can hardly go into all of them and nor will I since I could write 5 pages on the app. But if you’re looking for a new Smartphone and a GPS device, look no further.

Droid is a high-end smartphone that works very well and represents the best Android has to offer. It steals the thunder from any other Android handset that I had my hands on. As a phone, it is very good, and besides minor quirks like email search, it is a very good communication device as well. The Verizon network also worked wonderfully in an area (Potrero Hill, SF) that has been usually very difficult for T-Mobile and inconsistent (at best) for AT&T. For once, I never *had to* setup WiFi.

reghardware‘s review Edit

The Droid is a good phone. It's solidly built, its on-board apps are well-designed, and its third-party app collection is large and growing larger. On the down side, its keyboard can't compete with that of a Blackberry, its basic UI is a mixed bag, and its camera and its support software - both internally and in the Camera app - is in need of a redo.

Engadget‘s review Edit

The DROID is an excellent smartphone with many (if not all) of the features that a modern user would expect, and if you're a Verizon customer, there probably isn't a more action packed device on the network. That's not to say the device doesn't have its faults; the camera was unpleasant to use, the application selection feels thin in both quantity and quality, and the phone has bits of basic, non-intuitive functionality that might chafe on some users after a while. But even still, it's hard not to recommend the DROID to potential buyers eager to do more with their devices.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Overall, we were very impressed with the Motorola DROID. The phone feels solid, looks great, and performs very well. The Android 2.0 interface was a joy to use and the touchscreen was vibrant and crisp. Call quality and Verizon's vast network are also key benefits to this phone. Coverage varies widely from one area to the next, so this will definitely not be the phone/network combination for everyone, but it is nice to have a solid network supporting a phone such as this.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

The Motorola Droid certainly stands out among the growing Android army due to its superior hardware and enhanced 2.0 software. But will the Android Marketplace catch up to the iPhone's App Store? Therein lies the key to success for the Droid. The Droid certainly lives up to its promises and does a lot of things the iPhone doesn't. The iPhone will probably keep its smartphone throne for now, but it will have to deal with a powerful new competitor.

Macworld‘s review Edit

Making good use of Android 2.0’s new features, the Droid is a powerful Web surfing and communications tool that has a chance of living up to its hype. The Droid’s biggest flaw, however, is in its hardware design: The keyboard is shallow and flat, which can make typing uncomfortable.

The Droid will not transport you to that island paradise for an instant vacation, but it will do most of what you need to do with a smart phone. Web browsing with the Droid and Verizon’s service is a real pleasure. Although the physical keyboard could be better, finding it in such a small frame is a real plus, as is the clarity of the Droid’s high resolution screen. The Droid along with Verizon’s service has a lot going for it.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The Motorola Droid is the first truly lust-worthy smartphone from Verizon Wireless, and it puts all other Google Android phones to shame. Motorola may have stinted on a few of the basics in its quest for mind-blowing smartphone power. But the first Android 2.0 phone is definitely the most advanced and exciting device connecting to Verizon today.

SlashGear‘s review Edit

All in all, the Verizon DROID by Motorola sets the bar for all new Android devices and is arguably the best Android device to date. The natural comparison is always going to be the iPhone 3GS, and while the DROID lacks the Apple handset’s finesse and polish, it’s only a few steps behind.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

Despite some design issues and a couple of missing features, the Motorola Droid is the most powerful and fastest Google Android device to date. It fully embraces the openness of the Android platform and offers Verizon customers a smartphone that certainly rivals the other touch-screen devices on the market.

phonedog‘s review Edit

Sure, the DROID has some shortcomings. That being said, it's a phenomenal media device, and is a great addition to Verizon's smartphone lineup. Battery life leaves a lot to be desired, but the 3.7-inch display, Android 2.0 software, and strong design more than make up for it. Be sure to check it out in the store prior to purchase, as the design and operating system will be a love or hate thing.

The Motorola Droid turns heads with its WVGA+ display, sliding keyboard, 5 MPx camera, and a 16 GB memory card. IT is an Android 2.0-based smartphone that Verizon hopes will be an iPhone killer.

To say that the Droid is an exciting phone for Verizon Wireless is an understatement. The hardware is mostly good, though the QWERTY keyboard stumbles badly. It can be overlooked, however, if you don't mind using the software keyboards that are built into Android.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

Where the Droid by Motorola or Motorola Droid, as it will no doubt be known, succeeds is that it offers you a state of the art experience of Android 2.0 on a network that has flawless telephone reception across the country. Against the iPhone, which is a multimedia internet device first and a telephone second, that will be a deal clincher for many.
